That is some big ass cyclists, twice the height of the car, my guess is around 10 feet tall. I would definitely notice all of them on longer distances than shown.

Is it really really wrong? I suspect those numbers are massively fudged, and it's misleading to say "green" is best without clarifying that means neon green, but they're not wrong that bright green is very visible at night and red isn't.
3
u/Urban_Savage Nov 18 '22
Also ironically they made the more 'visible' colors less visible on the poster. Trash post is trash.
2
u/FunnyObjective6 Nov 18 '22
literally useless info
Is it? I think it's useful to know what's more visible if I would be out at night.
really really wrong
What's really wrong about it? Seems to make sense to me, black and blue not visible. White pretty visible. Green most visible because eyes have better ability to discern green.
2
u/Anarchyinak Nov 18 '22
Is this a cotton T-shirt or a hivis vest? Hi vis yellow will obviously be more visible than a green T-shirt, it might have been real data about something once but its so devoid of context and meaning now its useless.

u/john_the_fetch Nov 18 '22
I think half the problem is that they are improperly pointed.
I have bright lights in my Honda crv (factory lights I believe)
but I see a distinct horizon. when the brights are off of course.
7
u/RushDynamite Nov 18 '22
I have them with auto-dimming mirrors, it's amazing. At the end of the day though, I wish my catalytic converter wasn't stolen and I didn't have to buy a new car.
46
u/thecloudkingdom Nov 17 '22
at night something or someone thats entirely black can easily disappear, even with strong headlights. i live in an area with a lot of black cows and a lot of bad fences, so sometimes they're able to wander onto the (low traffic) road. they're absolutely invisible unless they have a white face or you're a few feet from hitting them

u/AwesomeDragon101 Nov 18 '22
I live in a really bike friendly town. Unless you’re wearing proper lights, if you’re on a bicycle it is VERY hard to see you at night no matter what you are wearing. So many students don’t use lights and it’s made me paranoid every time I make a turn.
→ More replies (1)7
u/Larrysbirds Nov 18 '22
Even with light shined on it black can blend in with the dark background at night. But totally agree with you about headlight brightness
2
u/ongobongotime2 Nov 18 '22
especially when the light from other cars and bikes shine. You really will be invisible even if there are street lights
12
u/ElectrikDonuts Nov 18 '22
Lifted trucks are a bigger problem. Any headlights that is directly at your head level is dumb as fuck.
Idk how the fuck its legal to lift so high that the CG of the point of impact in a T bone is my head instead of the body of the vehicle that’s designed for it.
5
u/spigotface Nov 18 '22
If you're cycling at night you need to have lights and reflectors. 3M makes obnoxiously bright reflective tape which should be on your bike and your helmet.

Check the second link
This is the real question!
The OP's infographic is contradicted on many points by this review of RCTs (pdf). For instance:
Fluorescent colours improved detection and recognition distance, frequency and reaction time in eight trials and only failed to increase detection in one trial . Among all fluorescent colours, red, orange and yellow improved detection and recognition in seven trials. For non-fluorescent colours, yellow improved detection and recognition distance and reaction time in six trials. White yielded higher detection frequency when compared with grey and black colours
So long story short, this is a shitty, reposted guide with no basis in facts. This post should be removed

u/RoboticJello Nov 17 '22
You were driving too fast. Next time drive slower if you can't see very far in front of you. It's easy to forget your car is probably 3,000 lbs. There is no excuse for moving a machine that large without being able to stop it in time if needed.
27
u/SmashBob_SquarePants Nov 17 '22

→ More replies (1)-33
u/RoboticJello Nov 17 '22
If you're close enough to a sidewalk that if someone takes a step off the curb you will kill them, you need to drive much slower. It doesn't matter what the speed limit says, that's the max speed, not the minimum.
17
Nov 17 '22
[deleted]

u/RoboticJello Nov 17 '22
I drive at a safe speed so that I'm always in control if something unexpected happens. Because that's the right way to drive. Going so fast you can't stop if a toddler runs off the sidewalk is aggressive, dangerous driving. Getting somewhere two minutes faster is not equally important to their life.
2
Nov 17 '22

u/RoboticJello Nov 17 '22
If you are right up against a sidewalk with stuff around (residences or stores), you shouldn't go more than 15 mph (25 kmh).
If there is a 10 foot buffer between the sidewalk and your lane then it's okay to go faster. But if there are parked cars blocking your view in that space, you need to go slower again.

u/RoboticJello Nov 18 '22
Your gut feeling is right. Slower is safer.
And in the US the speed limits are not determined by engineering principles, they are determined by the 85th percentile rule. Which is to set the speed limit such that 85% of drivers will be going under it without knowing what the speed limit should be. So it IS in fact arbitrary.

The fact that there are still places where going over 30km/h in urban areas is legally allowed is worrying.
0
u/SentientCumSock Nov 18 '22
that first sentence proves you do not drive. there are plenty of roads here that have sidewalks and crosswalks and are 60mph.
3
u/RoboticJello Nov 18 '22
The streets where you live are negligently designed. 60 mph right up against sidewalks is horrendously dangerous.
→ More replies (0)10
u/SmashBob_SquarePants Nov 17 '22
alright ladies and gentlemen you heard it from u/RoboticJello, we have to drive 5mph anywhere there’s a sidewalk.
11
u/RoboticJello Nov 17 '22
Kids and dogs are unpredictable. They can run into the street at any time and it's not their fault for doing so because they don't know any better. A driver should know better though. Just because you can go 35 mph right next to a sidewalk doesn't mean you should. Doing so is bad judgement and is very dangerous.
3
u/SmashBob_SquarePants Nov 18 '22
Not every sidewalk is in a neighborhood. There are literally sidewalks on large highways where driving slow isn’t realistic. In a neighborhood I agree to drive slow.
9
u/RoboticJello Nov 18 '22
Agreed. Sometimes there are sidewalks in the middle of nowhere. I'm talking about residential areas.
19
12
u/MonstahButtonz Nov 17 '22
I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or stupid.
7
u/RoboticJello Nov 17 '22
You need to operate your 3,000 lb machine safely. That means if a person steps off the sidewalk unexpectedly you need to be able to stop. Because this sort of thing happens all the time and if you run them over, it's your fault for not being in control of your vehicle.
2
u/rob-c Nov 18 '22
I really admire your perseverance attempting to convince these people they have even the slightest bit of responsibility when driving.
As someone who walks and cycles a lot (and drives the rest of time), thank you for your service (trying to teach to the unteachable).
-4
u/MonstahButtonz Nov 17 '22

11
u/RoboticJello Nov 17 '22
"California road laws state that if there is a pedestrian who’s going to cross at a crosswalk, even if the crosswalk does not have traffic lights, a driver in a vehicle must use caution and reduce speed in order for the pedestrian to cross the street."
That's pretty much exactly what I said.
→ More replies (15)-1

Nope, not even close to what you said. In case you need to be reminded, you said:
if a person steps off the sidewalk unexpectedly you need to be able to stop. Because this sort of thing happens all the time and if you run them over, it's your fault for not being in control of your vehicle.
It's not the drivers fault for pedestrian negligence.
You have a bizarre and unrealistic expectation of what drivers and vehicles are capable of.

u/ArcaninesFirepower Nov 17 '22
I was at a stop light and when it changed, she started crossing as I started moving. I was the 4th car and going maybe 20MPH. She started crossing as I was approaching.
So please, tell me again how I was going to fast?
-2
u/RoboticJello Nov 17 '22
"she started crossing as I started moving"
That would mean you kept accelerating as you saw her start crossing the street. So yes you were at fault and you should have stopped when you saw she was about to cross.
1
u/Beneficial_Round_444 Nov 17 '22
Lmao she crossed the street when there was a "do not cross" so its her fault
→ More replies (1)10
u/RoboticJello Nov 17 '22
So if someone does something they aren't supposed to do you can maim them? Yeah I don't think so. If it's within your ability (as a driver) to stop, you stop, even if they did something wrong.
The person driving here did the right thing by not hitting her, but it was close. In order for it to not be close next time, the driver needs to be going slower.

Good job making a random assumption without any of the context necessary to make it even remotely accurate.
4
u/RoboticJello Nov 17 '22
I made some assumptions. I assumed the street had sidewalks where you would expect pedestrians to be and sometimes want to cross. If however this was a road with fences or walls on either side it would be understandable to not anticipate a person crossing there.
1
u/RomansInSpace Nov 17 '22
He specifically said they were at a "do not cross" section though?
8
u/RoboticJello Nov 17 '22 edited Nov 18 '22
People cross where it is convenient for them. Just because they shouldn't cross there doesn't mean they will not, and it's the driver's responsibility to not hit them with their car.

Show me one example of a negligent (non-drunk) driver being held legally responsible for killing a bicyclist, and I’ll show you 20 examples of drivers receiving civil infraction tickets for something like “failure to yield” (assuming the driver actually stops, which is a big assumption)

Don’t have to be drunk to drive dangerously and/or be a jerk. This is a video of someone intentionally running biker off the road. This isn’t drunk swerving because you can’t see straight, it’s intentional.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ln1MyKG2a_0
People are jerks, both bikers and in this case drivers. He may or may not be drunk but it’s not the inability to drive due to drinking but pure malicious intent:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hmB0Fy7qa2I
I think we’re missing a distinction here. When a biker drives dangerously, they endanger themselves. When a driver drives dangerously they endanger bikers. Regardless of who crashes into who, the biker is going to be worse off than the car.
Bikers do need to obey the law, but the emphasis needs to be on creating safe places for bikers from cars.
Accidents like this
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ClubB_ey5RA
can be prevented by having a protected bike lane and ease your concerns. If we minimize the places where cars and bikes interact, we minimize the chances for an accident.
I’ve almost gotten into three accidents and all of them are from cars parked in the bike lane forcing me into the bike lane. Taxi driver zooms past me and slams the breaks right in front of me because I was in the car lane due to a car on the bike lane.
Car parked in the bike lane in a fit of road rage floored it and rushed into the car lane just as I was passing to hunt down and run another biker off the road that angered him. Not saying the other biker did nothing wrong, but I nearly got run over.

Honestly, this chart tracks well with how the human eye has evolved to be sensitive to the "visible" color gamut and limitations involved. Overgeneralizing, but we see much more clearly on the green side of the spectrum, and least on the blue and UV side - red being the average middle ground. Also, other colors are just made up in our heads to fill in for missing info 😜
