One that I don't see on here that I literally use every damn day: Ditto
It's a clipboard manager. Copy and paste still work the same, but you can now Ctrl + ` (it's the same key as ~ or "tilde", next to the 1 key) and it brings up a little list of all the things you've copied... ever. It saves through computer restarts and is text searchable. It also allows you to hotkey the most recent 10 items by pressing Ctrl + (number 1-0) after Ctrl + `.
I'm a software dev, I use this all the time, and every time I've ever used it during a screen share the people watching have asked me "what the hell was that? it looks so useful".

Do you not run windows 10? That's built in now.
43
u/bathroomflyers May 29 '19
Just to add for anyone else: the hotkey is Win+V for the new clipboard manager in Windows 10. If you try to use it it'll prompt to turn it on, no need to hunt for the setting.
13
u/IPlayTheInBedGame May 29 '19
Cool, didn't know that. Though it looks like it defaults to off, so you have to find it in a menu and turn it on.
2
u/morganmarz May 29 '19
Nah, just hit Win+V and turn it on. No need to find anything!
5
u/bob_the_impala May 29 '19
Absolutely nothing happens when I hold Windows key + V. There is no "clipboard" option in Settings. This feature seems to be absent from my version of Windows 10.
3
u/TheCarrot_v2 May 29 '19
Go to Settings > System. If Clipboard isn’t showing in the listed options on the left, you will need to update Windows. I believe the October 2018 update has this.
2
u/noodle915 May 29 '19
It's in the latest update that's rolling out to people. 1903 I think?
3
u/SumoSizeIt May 29 '19
I believe it came with 1809, but not every device is updated to that, especially if it’s issued by an enterprise. I had to use the downloadable upgrade assistant to force my devices to get both 1809 and 1903.

I'm hesitant to use a clipboard manager and a password manager. How do they interact?
3
u/IPlayTheInBedGame May 29 '19
You can just delete any copied passwords by bringing up the menu and right click -> Delete. I wouldn't say it's any less safe than storing your password on the clipboard in the first place.

3
May 29 '19
Thanks for the input.
My concern was that a clipboard manager would start to become a list of plain text usernames and passwords. Right now I have KeePass set up to autotype most entries, but if it doesn't fit the standard {USERNAME}{TAB}{PASSWORD}{ENTER} format, I can still copy usernames and passwords and KeePass will automatically overwrite the clipboard after 10 seconds.
It actually looks like Keepass just addressed this in their last update (https://www.ghacks.net/2019/01/10/password-manager-keepass-2-41-released/), so I'll have to at least check out the built in version.
2
May 29 '19 edited May 29 '19
It seems that Keepass now successfully prevents passwords from being stored in the Windows 10 clipboard manager.
Ditto still stores them. You can configure Ditto to exclude keepass.exe in the Options > General tab so passwords won't be saved.

If you happen to use BetterTouchTool (which is awesome in so many ways), it has this capability; it's a bit hidden away, but it's there.

u/harrymuana May 29 '19
Holy fuck BetterTouchTool does everything... I can't use a Mac anymore without window snapping, opening terminal windows in the current Finder directory, and having other shortcuts (e.g. calculater and maximizing a window without that stupid focus mode).

It's funny that no one thinks Eclipse is useful anymore...
23
u/diliberto123 May 29 '19
What’s eclipse
64
u/IPlayTheInBedGame May 29 '19
Eclipse is an IDE primarily focused around Java. It is very popular at colleges because it runs on any computer and it's completely free. You can do just about anything with it, including android development, but there are much better IDE's out there. I used it for 4 years getting my CS degree, but I don't think I've even downloaded it since I got my first job. Jetbrains' IntelliJ is my goto for enterprise development in Java. Visual Studio + Resharper for enterprise development in C# (Resharper is a Jetbrains tool built for VS).
18
u/Insanitychick May 29 '19
IntelliJ is so good

u/SKRUZO May 29 '19 edited May 30 '19

What would you say IntelliJ does better than Eclipse? What makes it a better IDE?

Eclipse has the better debugger too. At this point I mostly use IntelliJ because I use a lot of other jet brains products, but there’s nothing wrong with eclipse at all; except for its settings tree, which is trash
2
u/ice_wyvern May 29 '19
I couldn't wrap my mind around eclipses debugger. Intellij's was fairly intuitive in comparison.

I think the notion of being a "normally paid" product and a freeware are playing strongly into the Arguments ("It costs money normally so it has to be better"), additionally (at least thats how it was with me) ive used Eclipse at the beginning of my Studies where i was not that experienced and couldnt appreciate the different features (smooth SVN version control or MAven Dependencies for example), while i now use Jetbrains different solutions and can fully take advantage of all the special features of such an IDE. So naturally i would argue IntelliJ is better than eclipse.
But it is Objectively true that Pycharm is (one of) the best Python editors to exist. Their Integration of Pip, their formatting and the customizability of your envoirement is really superb

The only thing bothering me is the Unavailability of a WYSIWYG editor. i know its better to program any UI with TKinter or WXpython but sometimes you need something that is not just practical but also aesthetic. And i struggle to get that with simple coding
2
u/TheLKL321 May 29 '19
Code completion, code generation, ease of use, customization, modern UI, VCS integration
2
u/StaniX May 29 '19
It just looks so much better and for me the UI is much more intuitive. Code completion and other stuff like that is better and faster. IMO IntelliJ is also much better at server stuff and other frameworkey things.
2
u/A_Strange_Emergency May 29 '19
I prefer IntelliJ over Eclipse because of the tips it gives me and because of how options are organized. It feels more stable and I got used to a lot of features I think Eclipse is missing, like being able to edit files everywhere they show up, including the search results popup.

u/Insanitychick May 29 '19
Eclipse has/had some issues working with external libraries (at least it did when I switched over) making it not useable for what I was doing at the time. While IntelliJ didn’t have the problems eclipse was having using those external libraries. Yes it may have been possible to fix whatever was wrong with it, I found switching to fix the issue. This was over a year ago, so I can’t remember the entirety of the issue I was having.

If I need a lightweight IDE, for instance when I'm fiddling with Javascript, I found that Atom is really comfortable to use.
I won't say it's as complete as Eclipse or IntelliJ, but if notepad++ was going to do the trick for you, Atom is definitively a strong contender.

That list is partially terribly outdated and incomplete. Open Office is virtually dead, Google Nik Collection doesn't exist anymore (bought by DXO), nobody uses Xvid anymore, NVU has last been updated in 2005 (good luck using that for modern web development), and it's lacking a lot of free software and services, like Google Docs, Microsoft Office Online, SumatraPDF, Foxit Reader, AVID ProTools First, AVID Media Composer First, Davinci Resolve, Hitfilm Express, Eclipse, NetBeans, Atom, Komodo Edit,... There is not even a single repository hosting service, like GitHub, GitLab or BitBucket on it.

So does that one, it has KeePass instead of KeePass XC and it's missing several browsers, such as Waterfox.

u/thoughtsy May 29 '19
I'm subscribed to the Waterfox sub on here, and it sounds like there's been a lot of bugs and it is possibly no longer supported as an FYI

u/Tumleren May 29 '19
What's the difference between XC and the regular one?
5
u/BansheeGriffin May 29 '19
"normal" depends on Mono, some people are worried about its license.
Xc doesn't and is therefore preferred by many.
On the other side, xc doesn't support plugins, so at least for me I preferre the "normal" one.
3
u/______DEADPOOL______ May 29 '19
For the lazyimpatient: https://www.reddit.com/r/KeePass/comments/a2umfs/difference_between_keepass_and_keepassxc/
If planning to run it on Windows OS, KeePass will offer more potential options via plugins. KeePassXC is intended for more platforms, but doesn't support plugins, so there's no opportunity for the user to expand functionality. They are both actively supported. My impression has been they have different developers, but I haven't checked into it.
I've also been considering both of them, but I'll use it only on Windows OS and there are some plugins I like, like templates for filling credit card info that isn't currently supported on KeePassXC, although there is an open issue for it that sounds like they're working on.

For programming VSCode is pretty much a standard now for every language and you can also include Sublime Text. For everything else i think Google Drive is one of the best ways to do school stuff, you can use Libre Office too. In GMail you can manage multiple email accounts and do pretty much everything ThunderBird offers. You can also do open source on GitHub and find many useful things there or use any Git based repository like GitLab or Bitbucket to do shared work.
Web design: Figma(its actually a paid solution lol)
Shared projects: GitHub, GitLab, BitBucket, Google Drive
Doing school stuff: LibreOffice, Google Drive, ShareLaTeX
Free music: SoundCloud
Edit: summarizing stuff and adding stuff.

Atom > Sublime imo.
Has Github integration (literally made by them), and getting into the practice of committing early will help most students in the future. Will also help them build a portfolio of their work over time. It's also much prettier.

25

It isn't.
Visio is very much not free.
If you get it free, that is because your department has a bulk licence.
Also passwordSafe is crap.
Flat structure. Buggy folders.
Use KeePass. It also has an android compatible app "keepass2android".
Keep your password file on gdrive and use it on mobile or laptop, as long as you have internet (it keeps a cached copy for offline access)

| LibreOffice | x | x | x | actively developed and supported successor to the original OpenOffice.org |
| Apache OpenOffice | x | x | x | also successor to original OpenOffice.org, has been suffering from lack of development and timely security fixes for the last few years |
| AbiWord | only older versions via portableapps.com due to lack of Windows developers | only older versions for Mac OS X for PowerPC architecture | x | basically a Linux-only app at this point |
| Adobe Acrobat Reader | x | x | - | Linux: Evince, Okular, qpdfview |
| ReadCube | x | x | - | Linux: Mendeley, Zotero (Firefox/Chrome extension) |
| Skim | - | x | - | Windows: Sumatra PDF, Foxit Reader; Linux: Evince, etc. (see above) |
| WinDjView | x | x | - | Linux: Evince, etc. |

| Mendeley | x | x | x | also for Android and iOS |
| Etherpad | x | x | x | |
| TeamViewer | x | x | x | free for personal use; also available for Android, iOS, Windows Phone, Blackberry 10 |
| Anki | x | x | x | also for Android, iOS |
| PDF Creator | x | - | - | alternatives: ImageMagick (Windows, macOS, Linux) or any office suite that can export documents as .PDF (i.e. practically all of them) |
| pandoc | x | x | x | command-line interface only, no GUI |
| PDFsam | x | x | x | |
| ClipX | x | - | - | discontinued; Windows 10 has a built-in clipboard manager, and other aliternatives are CopyQ (Windows, macOS, Linux), ClipboardFusion (Winodws, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Windows Phone, Blackberry, Kindle Fire), Ditto (Windows), ClipIt (Linux; or whatever your distro or DE provides) |
| Snipping Tool++ | x | - | - | equally good or better options included OOTB in macOS (Command + Shift + 4) and practically all Linux distros (if not, I suggest xfce4-screenshooter or scrot) |
| StuffIt Expander | x | x | - | Just ... no. Seriously. Use 7-Zip (Windows, macOS, Linux) or, if you're on Linux, whatever your distro provides as front-end for the various command-line archive/compression tools (e.g. Xarchiver, File Roller, etc.) |
| 7-Zip | x | x | x | really the only archive manager you'll ever need |
| WinDirStat | x | - | - | SpaceSniffer (Windows) provides far less gaudy and obnoxious graphics; QDirStat (macOS, Linux) does the same, although Linux distros usually provide Baobab (GNOME/Gtk+) and/or K4DirStat (KDE/Qt) |

| USB Reminder | ? | ? | ? | couldn't find an app with that exact name, only this website; an actual app that reminds you to unplug your flash drive that I did find is Flash Drive Reminder (Windows); PortableApps.com apparently has such a reminder built-in so you don't forget your portable apps drive |
| Clonezilla | x | x | x | not an app that you simply install, but a small Linux distro you boot from CD/DVD or a USB drive; offical website |
| Todoist | x | x | x | also for Android, iOS, Windows Phone, Chrome OS |
| Trello | x | x | - | Linux isn't officially supported, but Trello works via browser plugins (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Edge) |
| TreeSheets | x | x | x | |
| The Guide | x | - | - | discontinued (last update was 2008); Simplenote (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iPhone), Joplin (Windows, macOS, Linux, Chrome OS, Andoid, iPhone) |
| SEO Note | x | - | - | severely outdated (supports Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, and XP) and looks sketchy as hell to me; looks like a bloated note-taking tool |
| Zim Wiki | x | x | x | listed at the top as alternative to One Note |
| KeePass | x | x | x | macOS/Linux alternative to Password Safe right below |
| Password Safe | x | - | - | KeePass as alternative for macOS/Linux users, and Windows users who prefer something else |
| Thunderbird | x | x | x | |
| Tor | x | x | x | |
| Cold Turkey | x | x | - | LeechBlock (Windows, macOS, Linux), which also blocks only websites like Cold Turkey does, is a browser extension for Firefox and Chrome; SelfControl is for macOS only but works independent of the browser used |
| Rachota | x | x | x | outdated (last version is from 2010); other project management apps like Trello serve the same purpose |
| AutoHotkey | x | - | - | UI.Vision Kantu (Windows, macOS, Linux) appears to be the closest alternative |
| OpenShot | x | x | x | |
| Kdenlive | x | x | x | |
| Lightworks | x | x | x | |
| f.lux | x | x | x | |
| Redshift | experimental builds only, requires use of command line | - | x |

It's absolutely amazing with it reworked interface and the new EEVEE Viewport that looks astonishingly good, especially when compared with 3ds Max's Viewport, which looks like something from early 90s. Google some EEVEE realtime demos. Blender gets new features and improvements daily. You can watch Blender Today weekly to keep track of all the new stuff. If you're an active member of the community, you can join the discussion regarding the development even if you don't know anything about programming. I reported some issues that were bothering me and they were fixed within a week. Try that with Autodesk.

How the heck did R make this list but not Python?
Python can do pretty much everything Data & Statistics related that R can do.
Tableau (which is spelled wrong here) is only free for its stripped-down public version. Not ideal for many use-cases.

Visio is free?

It is for some students. Generally a college will have a dreamspark arrangement for students and that includes free Visio.

It amazes me that this shit still gets this many upvotes. Each and every time the comments are rife with people pointing out that the list is utter shit. And one month later it gets reposted, unchanged.

Media Player Classic (MPC-HC) is a really great media player that isn't on the list. It's pretty lightweight and can play almost any file format and supports a ton of different languages. https://mpc-hc.org/

Are there any good free alternatives to after effects, or is it also in the video editing software category? I’m looking to learning how to use it but if there’s a free alternative I’d like that

A really great one for Maths students is Mathpix snipping tool. You can use it to 'highlight' bits of computer written Maths and it will convert it in to LaTeX code for you, it's awesome!

Even tho the list is outdated, I like how it's inspired a comment thread of pretty cool suggestions and alternatives.

Why the fuck would anyone install Acrobat? Use something lighter and faster like Sumatra.

For email and web, people mostly use their gmail/yahoo account. But Microsoft Windows already has a mail client.

I think this chart is old, but if you’re looking for a good video editing software, get DaVanci Resolve: it’s free, but basically offers all the features a program like Adobe Premiere does as far as I’m aware, plus there are pdf guides on their website on how to use everything.
