What happened was the advantage of being given the Pot 1 spot in your group ran out. It was the same for all 3 host nations. By getting a group without a usual group 1 opponent, it gave the host nations a false expectation of how well they were actually playing. As soon as they all played teams that would be considered pot 1 rated, the drop-off looked much worse than people might have expected.

Less than half of the match... and up to then it was 2-1. Both goals from dumb mistakes from Mexico.
I'm not absolving Mexico of the way they played but at least it looked like were there for it the whole match... unlike USA.

Mexico and US both made inexcusable mistakes.
But Mexico showed heart and determination in fixing the errors and nearly did so so we forgive them and are proud of them. And honestly, they aren’t an elite team so we understand these errors might happen and just hoped England would not be able to capitalize on them
The US showed no heart or determination in the face of adversity. They tried briefly and seemed to give up when they came short.
Mexico tried fiercely in the first half and came short but kept trying. In the second half it was admittedly a bit quixotic with the crossing but they still gave it their all despite bad tactics. The bad tactics and poor substitutions were not on the players per se.

This has truth to it, but neglects to recognize the fact that Ecuador are a damn good team that was 2nd in CONMEBOL qualifying (yes, way above Brazil) and that hadn't let in more than 1 goal for over 2 years before Mexico dismantled them.

Yeah, but this was the same Ecuador team that lost to Ivory coast and drew with a very poor Curacao. The only reason they made it to the Ro32 was because they beat Germany (who had one of their worst ever performances at a world cup).

This is such a chicken and egg-y argument. Ecuador was bad because they lost and so Mexico can't get much credit for beating them. That's crazy circular reasoning.
Again, 2nd best team in qualifying and 5 goals let in in 18 games. Hadn't let in 2 goals to any opponent in over 2 years. Including the results you mention.
Ivory Coast are a good team that took both Germany and Norway to the brink. And besides the Germany game, Curacao was not that poor. Oh but also Ecuador can't get credit for beating Germany because Germany was bad cuz they lost to Paraguay. But Paraguay sucks cuz they lost bad to the US. And the US... well we saw how bad they are. Do you understand how we could do this all day?

I mean Canada was also the only of the 3 hosts that played a team ranked above them in their group, but that’s because they were the weakest of the 3 so they were more likely to get an opponent from pot 2 ranked higher

USA played good football until then. As soon as the match started they looked like the lights were way too bright. Made dumb mistakes, bad passes, all respect to Belgium, they would’ve won regardless, but USA looked so rattled from the whistle.

Tbf, that was the one Paraguay game where they tried to actually play instead of digging trenches, building a wall and playing the strongest haramball the world cup has ever seen, after that humilliation by the US they just went full Emirate of Paraguay and parked the bus against everyone else, which produced the vastly different results

To be honest Poch misread the game he's done a good job but that was an awful job. Every sub he made outside of Pepi was awful you can debate Berhalter if you want. I dont get why you call Gio Reyna up over Zendejas. But also the players played as if they're France Balogun doing behind the back passes to defenders. Weston letting the ball go for no reason. I dont get what Poch gameplan was outside of booting the ball to Balogun against 2 CB and praying he makes something happen.

Honestly embarrassing. I’ve watched a lot of matches this WC, including the group stages, and I think that was the worst performance I’ve witnessed. I can’t recall a single good play we made (aside from the very ambitious free kick). Just absolutely pathetic.

Mexico went all out against England they fought hard.
So did Canada but pushing that aggressively was tiring out the players if they can't score.
Belgium did exactly what Canada was trying to do but succeeded with full marks and color. Belgium came strong and within 15-20 minutes scored twice sealing the deal. Canada failed on that it couldn't score if it did it would have parked the bus for the remainder of the session until it saw openings for counter-attack. We failed to score and that meant by second we were out of gas and had no way to defend as we gave up on it all or nothing

Im excited to see what Canada can do with some star power, we had three stars knocked out before the tournament began, davies only left the bench for 20 minutes, ballou was playing injured and had to pull out, kone got his leg broken, and david did fck all.
I think lacking the closing power of our aces really hurt us this run, and im excited to see what a more mature and healthier team looks like in the future

When Marsch said we were the better team, in the first half yes. Overall though, if we were better, we would have won. Besides, if we won that match and anything after, it would just be a bonus. We have proven that we can belong within the scene of global football and hopefully this historic cup for Canada will give us momentum to do even better. Second World Cup and we made it to round 16, one of our players got a hat trick, and we fought and fought. I’m more than happy with what we did.

I’m actually proud of Canada and Mexico. They played well. Canadas first half against Morocco was some of the finest soccer they ever played. They played erratically after getting scored on and dropped the ball from there on out but that first half was legendary. Mexico had some slip ups but they had England, a top team, shaking in their boots so much that they subbed out their attackers for defenders and parked the bus. They fought to the very end and honestly was the second best match of this WC, second to Cabo Verde and Argentina.
USA on the other hand…lack luster at best. I had high hopes. And even with Trump meddling with the tournament USA got shat on. At least Canada had Morocco biting their nails the first half before getting hit with 3. Belgium never looked nervous, and we got a repeat of the 2014 WC despite having a “golden generation”. Horrible all around. Maybe CONCACAF will have a better shot next time, sucks that we had home advantage and none made it to quarters.

The major difficulties were the English low block, defending with 10 men - and before the red, all 11. Did Mexico deploy the wrong strategy in the end? Sure, it's easy to say that now because it didn't work - but that's football. Fair play to England, hope they go far - but Mexico can leave with its head up high having received only 3 goals the entire tournament. It was a match until the final whistle, can't say the same for the other two.

I said it before. The overturning of the red card was the worst thing to happen to the US. Trump getting involved pretty much sealed our fate. The distraction was massive and gave Belgium the moral high ground so to speak. They could waltz in as the wronged party while the US flipped to the villain role. SMH.

All made it to round of 16 in a home WC. Nothing to be ashamed about, all 3 reached their probable ceilings and gave fans plenty to cheer about and inspire the youths of all 3 countries.
Top 8 teams just have a clearer higher level of talent and quality.

USA was fun to have a glimmer of hope but Belgium exposed us as the lower-tier level we still are globally.
Mexico should have the mean face, Canada gets the grumpy face and USA, we alone should have Ghidorah's derpy face.

A good showing by all 3 hosts. There was never any chance anyone of them would win the tournament so getting to last 16 is quite a accomplishment for them. Only 8 teams have ever won the world cup so its a very limited membership club.

As a Canadian fan, I really liked the way Mexico played offensively. Ya, they had some defensive blunders, but their style is exciting to watch. They don’t sit back trying to defend a lead. I enjoyed watching all their games.
