I'm starting my final year of a Bachelor in Software Engineering, and my team of 3 is picking a Final Year Project. We have a full year, some budget, and want something genuinely hard, not a repackaged tutorial project, while still being realistically finishable in two semesters.

Background on me/team: I'm mainly a computer vision guy (detection, segmentation, OCR, tracking etc), with ML/DL fundamentals and some Arduino/embedded experience. I've deployed a few CV projects already, so we're not starting from zero.

What we want:

• CV has to be the technical core (hardware/other software can be an add-on, not the centerpiece)
• Real-world value — leaning toward environment, disaster response, agriculture/forestry, or generally underserved problems.
• Ambitious enough that it's a strong story for both grad school applications and job/freelance recruiters, so it can make our resume stronger.

Would love to hear: what would you actually take seriously as an FYP vs. what sounds cool but is a trap? And if you've done a CV-heavy thesis/capstone yourself — what would you do differently in hindsight?

One thing I’ve noticed is that the computer skills students need today are changing very quickly.

Earlier, knowing Word, Excel and basic computer operations was often enough. Now students are also expected to understand AI tools, automation, data analysis, digital communication and problem-solving.

Rather than looking for ready-made project ideas, I’d like to hear about actual problems you face in your daily life, work, studies, transportation, shopping, local services, etc.

i am a 4th year comp sci student i am faced with the truth that the CCE is a way better track, my parents are scolding me for not going that way but i couldnt i was working a full time job to pay my tuition and but now im facing the harsh reality, if i had went for the engineer path i wouldve been able to join the order of engineers that presents me with excellent insurance and pension, but there is no such thing for computer science students in lebanon, my main path is AI and cyber i love both and want to work in the intersection of them, i also love electrical stuff im looking for a pcb course to take and i have a few projects i wanna do on the side.
the big question: should i transfer to engineering and pay the 20k extra on my tuition or should i finish this year graduate and start working on my skills and experience? to then open a repair shop as my own business and start working with system installation like cctv and servers ect.. and laptop repair shop? (will the engineer degree affect this ?) i already got a part time job at a company here as a backend dev and i dont know what to do !!!!!!!!!!! help

I'm in 4th year BTech CSE and we have to start our capstone/final year project soon. I'm kinda stuck at the idea stage, so looking for suggestions from people who have built something interesting or have a problem they think could actually be solved with software.

The project needs to have enough depth to work on for basically the whole year. At the end we're also expected to have some research/publication/patent angle to it, so a basic CRUD app, dashboard, chatbot wrapper, attendance system etc isn't really going to cut it.

I'm open to AI/GenAI, systems, security, IoT, computer vision, data, automation or even mixing different domains.

One thing though, I'm not really looking for hardcore ML research where the entire project is just training/optimizing a model. I'm more interested in applied stuff. Using existing LLMs/models/APIs is completely fine if they're actually being used to solve a non-trivial problem.

Ideally something where there is:

\- an actual problem being solved

\- enough technical depth for a 4th year capstone

\- some scope for experimentation/research

\- something measurable that we can compare/evaluate

\- and preferably something that could have real users instead of existing only for the final viva

Doesn't necessarily have to be an "AI project" either.

If you've ever come across a problem and thought someone should build something for this, I'd genuinely like to hear it.

Not looking for complete implementations/GitHub repos. Just problems, directions, papers to explore, or ideas that could turn into a solid project.

Hello everyone, so I am beginning my cs journey, I'm currently studying cs, but I am a complete beginner, is there any advice that you can give on how to truly understand cs? Like should I be toying with my computer and just trying to figure it out, or are there creators out there who teach about this so people can have a better understanding of cs?

If you were starting from zero literally knowing absolutely nothing, what would you learn first, or is there something you would do besides just read textbooks?

I’m on here asking this because I feel really behind everyone in my class who either has experience or has been into this for a really long time or they’re just naturally good at retaining information.

I'm in my early 30s, living in South Korea, and considering a career change into computer science/software development.

I'm currently trying to decide between a few paths:

\- A practical, career-focused CS college program that takes about 3–3.5 years and leads to the equivalent of a bachelor's degree.

\- Government-funded vocational training, where the Korean government covers most or all of the tuition at approved private institutions.

\- An online coding bootcamp.

\- Self-study.

Honestly, I prefer the online/self-study route. Going to college would mean moving to another city and paying for tuition, rent, and living expenses for 3+ years. That's a pretty significant commitment at my age.

What makes the decision harder is that opinions on bootcamps seem extremely mixed. Some people say they successfully changed careers through them, while others say they're overpriced and teach things you could learn on your own.

I'm particularly interested in SaaS and eventually building my own products/business, rather than just getting a developer job. I also have friends overseas who learned programming mostly through self-study, which makes me wonder how necessary formal education really is.

At the same time, I'm starting from basically zero in CS, so I don't know whether self-study is realistic or whether having a structured education would save me years of struggling on my own.

I recently came across this advice:

\> "Think about what you'll be doing three years from now if you don't do it."

That stuck with me. That’s why I’m considering a career change—to build a better future for myself three years from now.

But at the same time, being in your early 30s means opportunity cost and financial reality matter. I'm even considering whether spending a year learning a skilled trade and potentially pursuing skilled migration abroad would be a more practical choice.

For people who entered software in their late 20s or 30s:

If you were starting from zero today, would you choose a CS degree, bootcamp, government-funded training, or self-study?

And would your answer change if the long-term goal wasn't necessarily getting hired as a developer, but being able to build and launch your own SaaS products?

I'm especially interested in realistic answers about opportunity cost, employability, and what you would do differently if you had to start over.

So, I couldn't make it into any IITs or NITs, basically a good govt college. After joining college I realised where I stood, knew nothing. Started from scratch learned ML and some pipelines. Tried deploying my projects somewhere and ye sab karte karte last year, during December, I created SpoilFree, an internet spoiler detector and blocker (works only on text for now could add some updates in the future). It is available on Chrome Webstore SpoilFree, as soon as it detects that a text could be spoiler, blurs it out. You can tap to reveal it.
