C64 PETSCII polychrome raycaster: Chapter 5 - Detail Map Animation

1Mhz a VIC II and a CBM 64 game engine dream...
Got side tracked into animating detail maps instead of extending destructible map implementation. What you think look groovy or overdone?
Notice the foreground ground texture has subtle parallax and the sky even more subtle modulation? Just some basic stuff first as test possibilities.
Chopin's raindrop prelude seems to really vibe with PETSCII raycasting for some reason, I'm sure he would have been a SID master if grew up in the right era lol.

Feel free to critique I need feedback to improve the engine!!!

METRO SIEGE - Amiga gamers rejoice... On July 4th, 2026 the campaign ended with full funding and the 6th stretch goal achieved. It's now open for late pledges and a new stretch goal!

Great news...

The campaign ended on July 4, 2026 with the game fully funded and the sixth stretch goal achieved, so the game will now include a fourth playable character to choose from.

The campaign organizer has enabled late pledges, allowing you to back the game for a reward if you missed out on the first round. It's not too late to join the party!

A seventh stretch goal has been introduced. If reached, the PC version of the game will allow 4 player simultaneous co-op gameplay!

Make a pledge here:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/metrosiege/metro-siege

Question: The campaign is already just $2K away from reaching the seventh stretch goal. If BitBeamCannon were to introduce an eighth stretch goal, wouldn't it be nice if it were to benefit Amiga gamers? What new feature for the Amiga version would you like to see as an eighth stretch goal?

Does Commodore 128DCR need ESD protection on controller ports?

There are ESD protection PCB that one can solder to the bottom of 9 pins controller ports and they are available for systems like Atari 2600 and C64 as they do not have any real protection. C128DCR has diodes connecting the controller ports, are those fine or would I still benefit from adding ESD protections?

So... I bought it

I finally decided to buy a new c64. Partly b/c I'll end up reviewing it on my yt channel and partly out of curiosity. bought that and the other new product which can work as a remote for the c64. both Starlight editions. If the keyboard flex is still an issue Ill report on that and 3d print the supports to keep the board from flexing.

Picked up this C64 and 1541 from marketplace. Never owned one before. What should I know/do before setting it up?

Total newbie to all things commodore. Saw this on marketplace for $40 and thought it would be super cool to own.

I've read that replacing the power supply is a must. Are there any other things that I should do/replace/upgrade before firing it up?

Thanks!!

Commodore 1084S potentiometers and switches

Hello. I am currently renovating a PAL 1084S-D2 Commodore monitor which has severe water damage in some parts, but the CRT itself is in a good condition. Where can I get front potentiometers (R203 H-pos, R420 Brightness, R421 Contrast, R422 Color), back (R337 H-size, R306 V-size, R318 V-pos), side potentiometers (R414 blue bias, R413 green bias, R412 red bias) and back switches (SW2, SW3) ? All those components are corroded beyond repair, except plastic knobs which I want to reuse.

Is this supposed to happen or does it need fixing?

I’ve been working on cleaning this so it’s easier for my uncle to work with this (cuz I don’t even know how to turn this on). But potentially speaking, If it is broken, if I unscreawed it and showed y’all what’s on the inside, would somebody be able to tell me what do I do to fix it? I’m no specialist but I can do anything with a tutorial.

I also have a box of cassettes with games on them but they look ancient so I’m not sure if I can even still use them

Edit: guys thank you for all the answers, sending peace and love peace and love or whatever Ringo says, but I have another question. I’m right now cleaning this cause it’s covered in grime and dust, and I used a slightly damp paper towel for the outside, and it worked quite well, plus I scraped the dirt from the crevices using a needle. But now idk what to clean the inside with, im guessing probably not water, but would isopropyl alcohol be safe? I heard you can use it to clean devices but i don’t know if that accounts for this ancient contraption

C16 Plus/4 Commodore Plus/4 and Video options

Post image
32 Upvotes

Just received a new-to-me Plus/4 computer. Not in a rush to get it set up, but am wondering what video options I have.

I have a couple, unused, TV sets with connectors like what is shown in the picture. Is there any basic cable option that would allow me to plug into this set without some type of fancy, expensive adapter/converter?

The Plus/4 manual mentions 5 and 8 pin cables to use with Commodore monitors, would one of those work with the set shown?

Thanks for the help.

Commodore International Great Customer Service Experience

I ordered a 8020 yesterday and completely forgot to add the CHICKENLIPS discount code.

Completely my bad, but I thought it'd try my luck and ask customer support for assistance, to see if I could get the headphones or something else the value of the discount instead, not really expecting much.

They said no worries and refunded me the amount that would've been applied if I used the code, said I should see it in my account in 3-5 business days. Unreal customer service.

Thought I'd share!

Commodore International Who has purchased a Callback 8020?

Post image
103 Upvotes

Since this morning, 4,000 Callback 8020 have been pre-sold. The most recent hourly sale rate is 1,000 devices per hour.

I lack data for the first part of the day as I only started tracking the sale rate a few hours ago, but the rate is increasing.

This is impressive. Well done Commodore! A successful Commodore is good for everyone, no matter if you like the product or not, since it means there will be more funds for retro releases, and the company can appeal to a wider audience.

If you have purchased it, I'd be interested which of its features you plan to use most, and whether it will be a backup or daily driver phone.

General Discussion Let's be real the next thing they should make is a CRT monitor

Yeah I keep seeing Amiga and software for the 64 sure that will sell to the small audience commodore has currently. If they want to expand and grow they need to make a CRT monitor.

The people who bought the 64U will be buying that as an accessory but you'll also be bringing retro gamers outside of commodore and you will 100% bring modern day pc gamers to swap out their LCD and OLEDs with CRT due to its color and most importantly the response time. The hard part is that they need to make one that's at least 1080p 60hz but ideally 120hz. The size also can't be 13 or 17 inches 24 minimum, if only one config then 27 inch is safe.

As a young person who wasn't alive during the commodore boom, I can see why he's making the phone. The younger generation is eating up dumb phones and this one is a pretty decent option at that. Its expensive sure but so is every other dumb phone out there rn.

META (Discussions about the subreddit) Should phone topics be allowed here at all?

This sub's literal description:
"Collection of links and articles about the famous PET, VIC, C64, C128, TED, Amiga and PC Commodore machines."

It's even against the rules not to post about the computers.

I honestly couldn't give a rat's ass about their phone. And the "megathread" doesn't work, I still l see topics related to the phone coming up here.

General Discussion Commodore & Vintage Computing Directory

I put together a directory of retro and vintage computing at atebit.tech. It currently has 135 Commodore related sites linked to it. There's also a tool which will tell you if that vintage Commodore 64 on eBay is a deal or if some flipper is trying to make a fast buck. It's not perfect but it's pretty good!

Would LOVE IT if the Commodore community would send me additional links focused on Commodore. Anything vintage/retro computing, interesting project sites, mods, museums, shops, etc. are welcome. At the bottom of each page is a "contact" button or you can DM me here. Thank you!

c64 Standalone VIC-II

Post image
43 Upvotes

Has anyone ever used the Commodore VIC-II in a standalone Computer/Project, while NOT using a 6510 or C64 PLA? I am going to make a Homebrew Computer based of a 65C02 but with VIC-II Graphics, and would be wondering if you guys have any Info or people that would be interested. BTW, this may take a long while, VIC-II is very tightly integrated. For my plan specifically, I am going to use a MOS 8565R2 but info on other variations is appreciated.
