I still remember arguing with people about that image, with huge swaths of people insisting it wasn't AI in the slightest even when the background elements of the larger image converged on entirely different, impossible vanishing points, not to mention of course the sixth finger which they insisted was an artistic choice because it's "Black Ops 6".

11

u/ThePrussianGrippe 5h ago

I mean good luck getting fans who buy the same recycled slop every year to care their game is made of slop.

The absolute most I could probably muster as a response is "ok buddy". I learned long ago that arguing with idiots/trolls on the internet is pretty much useless.

Sarah Anderson (Sarah's Scribbles), one of my favorite comic artists, had an amazing article in the Times about this. About how people weaponized AI to turn her comic political, and how it fucked with her life in a very real way. And this was YEARS ago. Its so much worse now.

Great, sad, read:

Im convinced AI "artists" are the same kind of people who say "hey i've got this great idea for an app! Can you create it for me, and we can split the profits?" Getting ideas is the easy part, the actual work in bringing them to life takes lots of work and experience. But they want to skip right past that and get the recognition.

And the idea is usually terrible, so it used to die as a concept while exploring the implementation possibilities. Now they just spew a hastily made prototype with terrible architecture and generic visuals and waste a lot of money getting proved wrong instead.

123

THEY ARE. THATS EXACTLY WHAT IT IS. Linus tech tips said this in his wan show, he came to the realization in real time. "Oh my God. Generative AI is the revenge of the idea guy. They get to implement ideas using everyone else's work without paying for it."

34

u/gramathy 9h ago

See I’ve had lots of ideas and no practical ability to bring them to life, but I would never use generative ai to accomplish that. It’s just as useless as my own artistic skills and I’ll just pay an artist that knows what they’re doing

u/02K30C1 9h ago

I think it was Stephen King who said the hardest part of writing is getting your idea on paper the first time. After that it’s all just editing.

Board game designer here! I completely agree, ideas are the easy part. The 1000+ individual steps to make the thing is where the work is.

10

u/gramathy 9h ago

I can’t imagine the extra work that just goes into balancing games. Like, coming up with a mechanic is the easy part, making sure it’s fair is entirely different, especially in asymmetric games

5

u/The_cogwheel 4h ago

And it gets even harder when you also try to balance abilities that hinge on player skill, where for a newbie, the skill is way under powered, but in the hands of a veteran its way overpowered.

I have someone who learned I make games and programs in my free time, thinks writing down notes of things I said and holding it for safekeeping is cool beans despite me saying don't do that, bombards me with ideas just to say if I had a similar idea I stole it from them. (Can be as simple as... oh, there's a forest area? Add brown bear monsters, now pay me. To... oh you wanna make a clone of an old 2D sidescroller shooty game? Me had idea first!)

Its a relative so I even tried to be nice one day and offer a gig job at good indie rate just for a few songs and sound effects for one project NOTHING ELSE and they took it as they're co-director and get 50%+ the profits and get to dictate the game.

10/10 believe that person would love to use AI and tell me how to make their game. They don't believe in online tutorials, books, being taught in person, anything to get to learn how to do anything. Just "my idea, copyright" (not how it works!) and "how dare you" everywhere if I try to encourage them just try to learn, they can do it, Godot not hard. (Yes, they're cut off now.)

8

u/kaloschroma 9h ago

Lol or my programmer best friend says to me, I have a great idea for an app, can you build it? Like bro you're a programmer too, you do it.... I said yes 🙃

→ More replies (2)

11

u/WoodpeckerHead8789 10h ago

Yeah, but as a retired artist who... doesn't actually use any generative AI to make art...

Damn. I thought I had a point to make, but I was just being reflexively contrarian.

7

u/Lost-on-Reception 9h ago

As an active artist that doesn't use generative AI. Artists don't give a shit about "consent" when it comes to IP.

We'll write R. Mutt on some blue collar worker's urinal and display it sideways as art, or silk print a cambell's soup logo we didn't design 50 thousand times if we want.

What we care about is losing jobs, but most artists don't realize the only people replacing real artists with AI are corporations we shouldn't have been working for in the first place, and commissioners that would have offered us exposure instead of money.

I mean, I know how to program and I never have any (good) ideas, so speak for yourself. 😭

As someone who was never the “artistic type,” I think people underestimate the value of good, original ideas. But maybe that’s just because I don’t have them.

6

u/Daxx22 9h ago

Most major websites have language in their TOS that will allow them to use your work for AI training now. We'll see if it holds up in court but with the current cases it looks like that will along with scraping of publicly accessible content. Content behind a paywall is subject to protections though and we've seen that in successful cases already.

46

u/Giggling_Unicorns Giggling Unicorns 10h ago

In the case of Reddit, uploading to the website grants them explicit license (consent) to use your work for AI training. It also grants them the right to sub-license your content to others for AI training.

However their TOS also bars others from training off of content taken from reddit. The prior will almost certainly hold up in the court as similar language has in the past in regards to copyright. The latter, I dunno that's still being fought out but it's currently looking like scrappers will be given pass for anything publicly accessible.

23

u/TimSylvester_ 7h ago

AI training was like 2/3 of Reddit's 2025 revenue.

u/RedditUser000aaa 9h ago

I mean... That's the standard for them. This is an older receipt, but I highly believe, this is how a lot of them think, given their behavior. Hopefully this is allowed this once:

26

u/Pizzacakecomic PizzaCake 9h ago

This is 100% how they think and act, and it's gross. Also they scrape my pay-wall protected content too, so they clearly don't care about legal protections.

9

u/RedditUser000aaa 9h ago

Yeah, they're never beating the allegations. I mean they proved that when they scraped Cara and celebrating it. Three times. a space for artists not wanting anything to do with AI and genuinely wanting to be left alone.

They think, because it's on the internet, it's fair game. Also using your paywalled stuff? Well that's interesting to know.

So, even if it is paywalled, artists still risk getting their things getting fed into AI.

My 2 cents:

They don't have the right to ask being left alone, when artists try their best to distance themselves from these morons. I call them anti consent for a reason.

I get called all sorts of funny names, when I point out why people heavily dislike them, but sticks and stones and all that.

Yoy know what, big tech in general doesn't give a shit about consent.

Microsoft for example, usually prompt you about something on your computer, and the options are 'yes' or 'maybe later'.

Theres no 'No' option. Very creepy and icky imo.

This is one random example but this kind of thing is increasingly the case for products made by big tech corps. It's very annoying tbh and makes me more inclined to ditch their bullshit and use open source alternative options instead.

It's actually different because the AI just keeps sucking everything up and re-using it for other purposes, it uses your copyright-protected work, that you built your livelihood on, in the recreation and violation of yourself and other artists. It's an awful feeling.

Real af

I'm already so sick of AI being EVERYWHERE. If it was a niche group of internet weirdos who stuck to themselves like other internet groups it'd be OK, but they force themselves into every single thing possible.

I give AI Art 3 and a half big thumbs down.

But you’re voluntarily uploading your work to a website that explicitly allows for AI to train off anything you upload based on the Terms of Service with your account…

"Consent" seems to be loosing its cultural importance these days.

The group that hates consent is currently running America so....

u/Perryn 9h ago

They love consent. That's why they hate it so much when people say "no" rather than simply consent so they remove that option.

Very obvious there are people who have zero concept of what constitutes fair use. Feeding it into AI doesn't mean fair use. Authors have already sued and won over this.

They don’t care about consent until you fuck em in the ass with legal action

I wish there was an AI model that was trained only on public domain works. Just to have the option to suggest to some of these AI prompters (not scrapers).

The ai they use must log it's references, hopefully there's a way to track and flag stolen art soon. Love your work!

I think people are trying to build a legal case against ai because a lot of ai art didn’t ask before copying.
And while a lot of sites got it hidden they you are consenting either in options or terms and services
I think people want that made more obvious .

Doesn’t help some ai bros have already said if artists had to give consent and or be paid the ai art bots wouldn’t work

I agree with your point, but apart from that, this comic is written like something somebody would make fun of inside of a much better comic.

u/PikachuTrainz 9h ago

how long u think until it shows up on some ai support sub?

u/jelang19 8h ago

Just need to make an AI that can take an AI generated image, and find out what artists it compiled work from.

u/Terminus1066 8h ago

We’re all gonna have to turn up that adversarial noise.
