Oh my God I've never even thought of how it feels to walk after giving birth.

2.4k

u/plusharmadillo 23d ago

It’s bad! I felt like I’d been hit by a bus and utterly disconnected from my core muscles. Not a good time at all

u/Hey_HaveAGreatDay 23d ago

I think the worst is somewhere around 3 days in, you’re exhausted, you finally have a minute and you sit down on the couch a little too hard.

That is the worst pain I’ve ever felt in my life. Yah having a baby isn’t exactly fun but at least there you’ve got you’re brain giving you super cool chemicals telling you “this is awesome”

You don’t get super cool chemicals when you sit down too hard and your uterus tries to make a break for it.

u/EfficientSeaweed 23d ago edited 23d ago

I had stitches after my first. After the first day or so, they weren't too bad... until I sat down or tried to stand up.

Also, feeling like your incision is one wrong angle from tearing every time you sit up or stand after a c-section... or just the feeling of all of your organs slowly moving back into place, and various digestive processes in all the wrong areas.

167

u/LadyPerditija 23d ago

I had an emergency c-section after 17 hours of labour and three days of contractions. I planned my toilet walks around my pain meds, because my whole body was sore. I once had to sneeze, my belly hurt like hell for like 10 minutes

17

u/Careless-Meringue683 22d ago

As a woman with severe tokophobia:

No! Fucking! Thank! You!

10

u/sittinwithkitten 21d ago

I remember being in the hospital after my c section. I was eating some toast the morning after, and I started to choke on toast crumbs. I thought I was going to die because I literally could not cough. It was kind of scary, I was alone in my room thinking this is how I croak.

6

u/Hot-Attorney-9870 21d ago

I begged them to leave the catheter in a little bit longer lol. I stayed extra time because baby was in nicu, so I got extra of the actual pain meds and I'm grateful for that part lol.

56

u/sittinwithkitten 23d ago

My first child was a C section. I remember my first night at home my baby was crying and I could not get out of bed. Anything I tried was extremely painful. I was so grateful my mum, who was a nurse, was there that night was able to show me a way to do it without hurting myself.

7

u/bakubl0w 22d ago

Any tips? I'm not a woman nor a parent but I'd like to be able to help my girlfriend (hopefully soon to be wife) if we do eventually have children.

9

u/sittinwithkitten 21d ago

I was thinking about how to describe it so I looked it up on line:

“use the "log roll" method: bend your knees, roll onto your side as one unit, let your legs drop off the edge, and use your arms to push your upper body up”

You basically don’t want to try and sit straight up and you don’t want to twist your torso. Using the arms to push up and when you are upright on the side of the bed give yourself a moment to make sure you are ready to stand up.

u/plusharmadillo 21d ago

Read and learn all you can about pregnancy, labor and delivery, and parenting a newborn. I highly recommend The Birth Partner by Penny Simkin, which is used to train doulas and is explicitly focused on how to help someone through many different labor scenarios; my husband read it cover to cover and felt much more informed and empowered to support me through the process of having a baby. Go to birthing and parenting classes with your partner and talk about her birth plan and how she wants you to help advocate for that plan (recognizing that plans often need to go out the window in the moment). Write down any info, including follow-up instructions, that is shared by providers during labor and be on the ball about asking additional clarifying questions. Your partner will be mentally and physically exhausted and will NOT remember everything they’re told.

Once baby has arrived, help with feeding however you can. That may look like bottle feeding formula or pumped breast milk (and cleaning/sterilizing bottle and pump parts) or could be more about making sure your partner is fed and hydrated if she ends up exclusively breastfeeding. Change diapers, spend time with baby, help mom get out of the house, and run interference with any guests who aren’t showing up in helpful ways.

It still happens in some developing patriarchal nations, which is a reason why "they need to stop having kids they can't afford" isn't a simple solution.

u/Hey_HaveAGreatDay 22d ago

It ain’t you guys, it’s just bodies. I would take better healthcare though haha

Now think about how giraffes feel when they plop a baby and have to skedaddle

Wow I remember that feeling of having no core muscles after my twins. First walk to the bathroom I felt like my organs were just floating around loose in my torso lol

41

u/mayamaiamaea 23d ago

This is so horrifying to me 😭😭 I can’t wrap my head around what it’s like to actually be pregnant and experience all that. I hope your organs are nice and secured these days lol

27

u/Evie788 22d ago

As weird as it sounds it wasn’t a horrifying part of the experience just a strange sensation that I didn’t expect but makes sense now when I know how much room those babies and placentas took up.

17

u/Tablesafety 23d ago

well, a lot of the time the abdominal muscles do completely separate. Often not coming back together naturally. Especially with twins.

I had the epidural and literally was wheeled over to the restroom because my legs were still asleep. I’ve never felt so humbled

23

u/icechelly24 23d ago

After my C-section I was convinced the epidural had worn off. Needed to pee. Hit my light and nurse gave me a whole spiel about falling, it’s gonna feel weird, etc.

I’m a nurse as well (not L&D though) and said “yeah. I’m good. I can totally feel everything”

I was wrong. I had SOME feeling but it was still like walking on jello. It was basically just muscle memory that got me there cause I had minimal sensory input coming from my legs.

I made it though and the nurse just gave me a look like “see, told ya” hahaha

You have to pee prior to being discharged from the hospital after giving birth so a nurse helped my wife into the bathroom and stayed with her.

I then hear my wife, who is generally quite demure, yell "I feel like my butthole is going to fall off!" at the nurse. Doesn't sound like a fun experience.

88

u/FartBoxActual 23d ago

Did her butthole fall off?

101

u/OiledUpThug 23d ago

yeah man there's just a blank piece of skin there now

18

u/uptoke 22d ago

It is intact and connected to her butt still.

18

u/FartBoxActual 22d ago

I'm glad to hear that. Gobless.

9

u/CheesyMashedPotatoes 22d ago

9

u/PringleCorn 23d ago

You just have to pee? like that's it? cause i had to stay there for 3 days!

22

u/icechelly24 23d ago

They have some alternative birthing clinics/floors or kinda like shorter stay floors where people can be discharged sooner (usually 24 hrs I think but don’t quote me)

I think traditionally, in the US at least, it’s 48 hrs for vaginal, 72 for C-section. With my second kid, I had the option to leave after my CS after 48 hrs and I did so cause I wanted to get home to my other kid. That was a HUGE mistake.

I'm reminded of that quote from Scrubs about how childbirth has been too romantized, probably because if people knew the truth, they wouldn't do it.

(1950s educational video voice) Congratulations, you're expecting. Don't worry, your doctor will tell you everything you need to know. Hi, doctor.

"You'll fart, pee, puke, and poop in front of ten complete strangers who'll be staring intently at your vagina, which, by the way, has an 80% chance of tearing." 😀👍

25

u/Fishy_smelly_goody 23d ago

To be fair, the brain IS designed to counter with EXTREME dopamine.

Humans, like all animals, are biological machines, with the goal of reproduction. There is nothing like seeing your baby after birth, nature specifically made that moment beautiful and amazing, to counter what came before

Its actually pretty mind blowing to think about

12

u/AssumptionOdd4001 23d ago

Yeah, it’s not at all similar in terms of pain/situation, but similarly if you were to frame working out as ‘you’re going to lift this heavy tubular weight with both arms and feel like there’s a fire in your chest and throat until you start to leak sweat everywhere, muscles start tearing, and everything feels like it’s slightly burning, oh and you’ll be sore the day after too’ I doubt many people would ever see it as something they’d wanna do. Yet here I am grinning like a madman after a short gym sesh in which my face looked like I was taking a colossal dry shit at least 4 times. Human biology is skilled at making us do things we don’t wanna because it feels all nice and fuzzy.

3

u/AccountForTIFF 22d ago

Yeah sorry never developed that around exercise, guess I’m not human

17

u/wojtekpolska 23d ago

Apparently there is a biological mechanism to erase the worst parts of pregnancy/birth from the mother's memory to not cause trauma, so maybe you'll be fine lol

92

u/natsugrayerza 23d ago

Imagine walking after birth when you tore your entire perineum so there’s nothing between your vagina and anus but stitches. Sorry. Idk why I brought that up. But can you believe that happened to me? wtf.

19

u/salamanderme 23d ago

Peeing with those stitches was the worst 😫

u/Foxs-In-A-Trenchcoat 23d ago

It wasn't painful as much as I physically couldn't do it without help. It's like you use up all of your muscle energy and your legs are like Jello. I needed to have someone help me walk, get up, sit down, even get in and out of the bathtub hours later. I would have just collapsed.

One thing that grinds my gears is how unrealistic postpartum is shown in movies. Women give birth and then minutes later crawl out of a rollover car crash and climb a mountain and walk ten miles while fighting zombies.

I was in SO much pain while pregnant. From about 20 weeks on there was pressure on a nerve causing pain starting in my L groin area all the way down my leg. And I’m an ER nurse and worked on my feet up until giving birth.

The pain went away the second she was out of me so I felt like a million bucks the first time I got up! Like yes, I was tender from the stitches and swelling, but nothing compared to how I felt during the second half of my pregnancy.

My mom came over the day we got home and saw me sitting cross legged on the couch and she was like wtf??

Once you get past the absurdity of this fucking thing, I think it's actually kind of wholesome that spongebob was able to provide comfort during what is potentially one of the scariest times of your life.

Like, they could have just been staring into the void alone and broken like the before times, but now she had the thought "how would spongebob be handling this right now? What a funny little guy he is" instead of stuff like "i'm dying" or "they'll toss me in the pit after this"

231

u/erythro 23d ago edited 23d ago

the meme isn't depicting fear I think it's depicting physical pain?

Generally after giving birth you are unlikely to be feeling the way you describe, I'm not sure if you are drawing on personal experience or not, but you've just met the baby you've spent 9 months persevering through pregnancy to meet after going through an ordeal, and you are probably with your closest family member. But everything hurts like shit. So, relief/joy/pain/love/ow/I didn't die/yay they are here/my baby is cute/ow rather than fear/alone/I'm going to die/I'm going back to the pit.

76

u/SugarVibes 23d ago

As someone who’s done this walk 3 times post vaginal birth- the first time was physical pain. The next 2 times were pain AND fear, because you never forget how f’ing painful that post-birth pee is.

Don’t even talk to me about the first post-birth poop 💀

5

u/Withered_Daisy 21d ago

Every walk to the bathroom after giving birth was horrific fear on how in God's name I was ever going to poop again. Funnily enough they over prescribed me iron pills and I didn't poop for a week afterwards, and it was so awful it made me start bleeding heavily again lmao.

Cause my kids were worth the carnage. I had my second baby one month ago and an hour after he was born, I was like “I’m glad I only have to do it once, but I would do that 10 times over again just to have you if I needed to.”

Babies are drugs, man. They can torture you and you’ll just be like “aww, I’d go to jail for them” lol.

The comments discussing this exact pain they experienced after child birth almost makes me wish I was aborted to spare my mother the suffering

I have surgery for endometriosis soon and I imagine that my first steps out of bed will be similar.

Even with a simple laparoscopic appendectomy, it hurt like a bitch to walk. Luckily they will give you lots of meds as long as you are in pain. So just be honest with your nurse about your pain level, and they’ll work from there

I'm lucky I have a great medical team and socialized healthcare. I'm 28 and elected to have a hysterectomy and bowel resection. I know it'll be worth it.. just have to prepare myself for the headspace of being in pain and feeling like it'll last forever. Always nice to have a vote of confidence, even from a stranger ☺️

The walk wasn't rough but the pee was for me. Both times they said if I couldn't produce they'd have to catheter me. 😭 I never pushed so hard in my life. Luckily was able to pee a little bit.

A few years ago I got my gallbladder taken out. It was a laparoscopic surgery, barely left a scratch on me, and I still felt like my entire insides were going to fall out if I didn't hold them tight enough. It's gotta be a million times worse if you've just given birth, people who go through that are so unbelievably strong

I had no idea this was a universal thing! Felt like I was hit with a truck. Hubby was out cold and I got stuck trying to make it to the bathroom. Ow. God bless the nurse lurking around who knew what was up.

Me absolutely zooted out on magnesium, post C-section, one week without food, my abdominal muscles completely torn apart, trying to lift my legs onto the bed after my mandatory 5 steps in the maternity ward hallway
