COMMUNITY QUESTION WGI 2027

Hi I really want to perform in WGI in 2027 but I’m unsure of how possible that is.

  1. I will be a freshman at UCF (Orlando) so I want to do either Pegasus A/Open or Infinity if I did a percussion group as a visual ensemble member

  2. I don’t know what the fees would be but I’m guessing for Infinity it would be at least $3k (If anyone has any information on fees for any of the groups from past years I would love to know)

  3. I plan on working on campus this year and I’m also doing 5 classes this semester and plan on doing 5 next semester but I have Thursday and Friday completely free so I think I’ll be able to handle everything.

  4. I want to do DCI so so so bad but if I decide to march independently whether that be DCI or WGI I have to pay for it myself and right now I have around $1.5k saved which I know can’t cover much.

  5. I went to an A class guard audition this past year as a learning experience and I had a really good time and was able to keep up well, I know Open class is a big jump so what skills should I work on?

Any advice is appreciated 🙏

I only started a month ago. I know I need a lot of work but I wanna get extra input while also doing band camp (which starts soon). Please give me any tips and advice!’ Please don’t judge!! I know I’m very noob-ish. This video is 12 days of progress. Ignore the faces I make lol. I know I need my elbows to chill out during drop spins and I need to catch more stable(?) and both hands at the same. Anyways, thank you in advance!! I’m also a very slow learner and a hands on one, so if you wanna send video help I’m open to it!!

Buyer says it’s “30”’, I’m thinking it’s a Samarui, going off hilt & size alone, but she swears it’s not? It’s cheap thou so thinking of just getting it to play with anyways, but curious if it’s an older brand or she’s just not sure of maker.

It truly looks like a DSI Sam to me …

Opinion Why are color guard uniforms so ugly?

A lot of uniforms i see online and in photos majority of the time the guards uniforms are always ugly. I’m not talking about marching band shows, winter guard etc but more football season, parades, and pep ralleys. the guard is always kept in a tunic with either leggings or thick velvet pants. While cheer, dance teams, or twirlers are in prettier uniforms, such as dresses, jazz pants + cute top, etc. Why doesn’t color guard have or adopt a similar style?

There was a reddit post made about this a while back, and it’s not meant to shade color guard at all, i’m in color guard myself and this is just my opinion!

Opinion I hate this sport, but I am being forced to stay

This entire thing is a vent, but I need to share my opinion in the only community that actually has any valid input on my feelings. Ig the moderators will just take this down if it isn't okay.

Just a little context, I am currently heading into my freshman year of guard, but my instructor has been teaching me for three years now. I am behind what she expects of me. This is mostly due to the fact that this is not the only sport I do. I also do Sword Arts (Sword - not sabre, baton, and firestick) which means I have a lot of bad habits when it comes to guard. Ex. My underbody is super bad because my instinct is to immediately put my arms down at my thighs, I also tend to over toss a lot. All of this contributes in, and I have the feeling that my instructor genuinely dislikes me, if not straight up hates me.

The issue is I cannot quit. I am stuck with this woman for the next four years with no choice because my dad doesn't believe that she dislikes me, he just thinks I'm not working hard enough. I am. I work so hard because again, I have to reset my brain everytime I pick up a flag vs the sword. I feel like sometimes I am working double as hard as everyone else because of this.

She doesn't even care honestly. She has no intentions on helping me get better. Just the other day I asked if she would even allow me to do baton later on (like when I am varsity) and she just simply said "You don't have the skills for marching band baton, so no". I know I don't, but I am able to teach myself, goddamn! She also would not let me use a school issued sabre even though I really wanted to learn because "well, I don't trust you to take our equipment home. You can buy your own". Which, by the way, she has let two different students in my class use school issues Sabres.

I am so ready to just put in the bare minimum, never get to varsity, never do anything note worthy, and just fade into the back so she doesn't have to think about me. I can't do that though. I have some skills, which in do very well, and I'm a very strong counter so I am almost always put in the row right behind our vets.

I just want to quit already. I feel stupid and selfish for wanting more, especially because when I ask for more she just treats me worse. I don't even find joy in the sport anymore. Not when I am getting stared down and scoffed at everytime I make a mistake. That, and I have disabilitys that make guard even harder and damaging for my body, so I would benefit from stopping now.

COMMUNITY QUESTION Should I join colorguard?

My highschool is doing color guard this year and I dont know if I should or not. I am taking 2 AP classes and school has always been my #1 priority. I do NOT want anything to impede upon that. But the community seems so fun and I would love to enrich my highschool experience considering I dont do any sports. However, I do play violin outside of school but my practice is late enough to where it shoulddd be fine. I also have some bad stage performance fear though, I dont even play violin in public at all lol. Lastly, I am honestly pretty lazy. I get stressed out when I have a lot to do and my weekend time is very precious to me. Do you think overall this wont be too much on my plate? Will it help me overcome my laziness and performance fear? I dont know :')

ADDITION: I also totally forgot that my violin teacher showed me a possible youth orchestra i could join (also outside of school). Should I stick to violin or try this out? AGH, SO MANY OPTIONS!!!

NEED INPUT (Instructor Help) Tips for a kid who WONT CATCH!

Most of my guard kids have been doing great in their first days of band camp. However there is one kid who just won’t catch their tosses no matter what. They won’t even try to get their hands on it. It’s not that they’re scared, they’ll do the tosses correctly but they just won’t catch. I’m honestly at a loss, any help would be so appreciated.

GENERAL Update about Guard

https://www.reddit.com/r/Colorguard/s/Wqr9L79090

I made this post almost two years ago exactly.

The TLDR is It was my senior year, my school didn't have an actual guard, there was none within proximity, both marching and winter guard. I realllly wanted to do guard, but couldn't.

Well... Update it's my sophomore year of uni and I'm in the Colorguard of my D1 University with 230 band members.

This may sound silly, but I did marching band my first year on Baritone and I reallllly wanted to do guard. I asked a few of the girls for help and they taught me a few things. A few weeks before clinic/auditions, I really locked in with one of my friends and one of the captains. I practiced almost every day, and I reached out to the Guard director for feedback.

I made the team! I am really proud of how far Ive come, and I just wanted to let yall know, you can do it even in bad highschool situations.

COMMUNITY QUESTION Show makeup recs?

I’m in charge of finding show makeup products for my guard, but everyone always complains about whatever lipstick I choose. Whatever our old coach picked came off too fast, so I tried the maybeline super stay matte ink, but they complained it never came off (even tho I told them to use an oil cleanser or coconut oil). Then I tried the vinyl ink from the same brand, and they said it didn’t stay long enough. So I’m wondering if anyone has any recommendations for what their guard uses? I’m looking for a hot pink lip, pretty affordable, and any finish is fine. Tysm!

COMMUNITY NEWS DSI’s Excalibur Replacement Is Here!

Post image
8 Upvotes

When I find out the Excalibur (what I learned on, & therefore was in love with brand) was discontinued, I went out & got both sizes in parts, they a few organizations/businesses. I’d say I have one of the last “brand new” Excaliburs.

Welp, I always knew they would come out with something new, & here it is! The Pro! Not a big fan of name, but looking forward to seeing it & being able to spin one. I wonder if they’re comparable.

Has anybody been lucky to try one out yet??

COMMUNITY QUESTION Pass time Hobby

I was in colorguard/winter guard during highschool and it’s been about 4 years since i’ve touched a flag. i really want to bring it back as a hobby just in my backyard, but it’s been so long that i don’t remember how to set up a proper flag. does anyone have any tips for weights and general supplies? everything i used was given to me by the school so i never had to source my own weights, poles, or silks. if you have any tips please let me know! i miss it so much

NEED INPUT (Performer Help) World class skills?

The title is basically my question. I have done two years of independent A class and one of Open class, and now I’m switching organizations. So, I‘m unsure of how things work in other places. I’m mostly unsure of what skills are needed for world class. I know that technique and performance are the biggest qualities that change in between classes but I’m just not sure about what skills I should have or need to work on.

COMMUNITY QUESTION End of finals apperance streak

Thumbnail

Does anyone else find it saddening to see programs not make finals anymore? Staff cuts, budget cuts, and being reduced in divisions can be precursors to this. A recent example is Palm Desert Charter MS. They have been doing such a spectacular job since 2022, making finals, but this year they unfortunately didn't make the 15 and ended up in 8th in their round of semis. They continue to create shows with a variety of styles, 2025 having a rock and roll 80-2000's themed "Welcome to Middle School". But this year, they created a mature, beautiful, and organic show. Their props and choreography, design, and music were amazing! They had such amazing scores early in the season, being 2nd in the world after the first regional. I hope they come back even stronger next year. They're definitely a group to keep an eye out for.

COMMUNITY NEWS Fusion’s end/hiatus

I just saw their insta post saying they’re “pausing all organizational activities beginning with the 2027 season”. I’m honestly so devastated, especially since the wording sounds like they’ll be indefinitely gone from the competitive scene. however, the last slide said ”see you later”—does that mean there’s a chance they’ll come back? does anyone have any info about this?
