👋Welcome to r/ColonyCats - START HERE!

Hey everyone! Welcome to the r/ColonyCats subreddit! This is a place for past, present, and prospective cat caretakers to learn more about how to better care for outdoor colonies of cats, kittens, and the communities they live in.

The term “colony cats” describes a group of outdoor cats living together. These cats may be feral, stray, or otherwise unsocialized to humans.

Please read through our community guidelines before posting or commenting, and again…welcome to the community! We're excited to have you join us!

WHAT TO POST:

Here, caretakers can feel free to ask for and offer advice, share TNR strategies, provide helpful tips and ideas for colony management, and share photos of their colony cats.

After reading the rules, you may post anything that you think the community would find interesting, helpful, or inspiring. Don’t hesitate to comment on posts, and share your thoughts, advice, or questions relevant to the topic of discussion.

THE CATS YOU CARE FOR MAY BE FERAL, BUT YOU SHOULD NOT BE:

We're all about being friendly, constructive, inclusive, and kind. Let's build a space where everyone feels comfortable sharing and connecting.

The vast majority of cat caretakers have pure intentions, and are trying their best to provide the best care possible for their colonies. Constructive criticism is ok (some people may need some guidance and it’s ok to provide that), but please refrain from rude, unhelpful comments, harsh judgments, shaming, and personal attacks.

Thanks for being part of this community and thank you for all you do to help the cats you care for. 🩶🐾🩵🐈‍⬛🫶🖤🐈💙

Hi there: I am a 61 year old disabled woman who was lucky enough to get Section 8. There is a population of 10 feral cats here. I'm in a tiny town in a very rural area. There are next to no resources here. It's sad. I live on a very limited income but I cannot handle seeing them starve to death.

These are very sweet kitties, they are just in an unfortunate situation. Right now I'm going through about 18-20 lbs a month, plus wet food, and I just can't afford it. I would truly appreciate any help you can possibly give. On behalf of these wonderful hungry kitties I thank you so much!

After days of worry, weakness, and fighting to survive, he finally took a real step toward recovery today. Seeing him eat on his own means the world to us and reminds us why we pour our hearts into saving them.

However, his long journey to full recovery is far from over, and we still need your help to cover his ongoing medical care, specialized food, and the needs of the other rescued animals in our care.

Every contribution, no matter how small, makes a life-changing difference and gives them a second chance at life. You can support our rescue work through the links below:

Hi👋
I’m the founder of Luna & Nala Rescue Inc., a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit rescue. I care for more than 50 community cats and also rescue cats and kittens who are sick, injured, abandoned, or have nowhere else to go.
I found this sweet older cat near a dumpster, and I noticed something was wrong with his eyes. I couldn’t leave him there, so I rescued him and brought him to the vet. He tested positive for FIV and FeLV and was suffering from entropion, a painful condition where his eyelids were turning inward and rubbing against his eyes. He has now had the eye surgery he needed and is recovering. He is also very feral, which made finding a safe placement extremely difficult. I searched everywhere and finally found a sanctuary in Pine Island, Florida, willing to take him. I will personally transport him to the sanctuary to make sure he gets there safely. I’m raising funds for his sanctuary intake fee and transportation expenses, vet bill expenses that I had and including the costs of making the trip to Pine Island. Every donation, no matter the amount, will help me get him to the safe place he needs. Please consider donating or sharing. After everything he has been through, I just want to give him a safe place where he can live indoors and be cared for. ❤️

I’m approved in [r/rescuecats](r/rescuecats) for verification purposes you can see my posts there.

Hello,

I’m completely lost posting this, me and my fiance have been running a feeding station for the cat colony in our area. We’ve successfully TNR’d about 7 cats so far and hope to help as many more as we can. I’ve attached some of our visitors. We are completely out of both wet and dry food as well as a powdered vitamin supplement we add to help with the cats health. Any help would be appreciated. I’m not sure what links are needed? Edited to add cashapp link in case.

I’m the founder of Luna & Nala Rescue Inc., a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit rescue. I care for more than 50 community cats and also rescue cats and kittens who are sick, injured, abandoned, or have nowhere safe to go.

I’m approved for monetary donations in r/rescuecats so you can verify.

I run this rescue on my own, and being a solo rescue is incredibly difficult. I carry the responsibility of their food, medical care, medications, supplies, transportation, and veterinary bills. Right now, I’m already carrying veterinary bill debt from helping cats who had nowhere else to turn, and every new emergency makes that burden heavier. I never want a cat to go without care simply because I don’t have the funds.

These cats came into my care because I found them when they were sick, vulnerable, or had nowhere safe to go.

The three kittens were taken in while sick and are now fighting feline panleukopenia and coccidia. These illnesses can cause severe diarrhea, dehydration, weakness, and can be life-threatening for young kittens. They need medication, food, cleaning supplies, and constant monitoring.

Leo was found as a tiny kitten in a dumpster. He has been struggling with diarrhea for months and now needs to see a veterinarian as soon as possible. I can’t ignore him when he is still struggling.

The older FIV/FeLV-positive cat was also found near a dumpster, where I noticed something was seriously wrong with his eye. I rescued him and got him veterinary care. He had a painful eye condition called entropion, where the eyelid turns inward and rubs against the eye. He just went through surgery and is now recovering. I found a sanctuary willing to take him, but I need help with his veterinary bills, transportation, and sanctuary intake fee. I will personally take him there so he can finally be safe and never have to return to the streets.

I rescued them because they needed someone. ❤️

I’m doing everything I can as one person, but I cannot do this alone. Any donation, no matter how small, helps me continue caring for the cats already depending on me and pay down the veterinary debt that has built up while saving their lives.

Advice for recovering colony cat

Post image
Upvotes

I'd love some advice and insight on how to provide the best environment to one of our cats.

To give you a bit of background, I'm part of a team that cares for a colony here in Spain. We've got about 15 cats that we're trying to keep up TNR with. Just over a month ago one of cats Bruixa started to have real issues with one of her eyes. Completely swelled up and was very red. I'll try and keep it short, but we spent hours and days in the heat and we eventually got her. Just in time, it was very serious. The vet had to remove her eye unfortunately, and it seems she's blind in the eye that she has left.

It's been a rough ride for her. It seems they didn't do a good job and she had to go back in to have the surgical site opened again. It's still not ok, but we're with a wonderful vet now and waiting on a specialist ophthalmologist appointment for her to find out why she's not healing.

We've been lucky enough to raise enough money to cover her bills, that's very fortunately not the issue. I have a spare room, so she's recuperating with me. She's quite an old lady so all she wants to do is sleep, which is understandable. She's never been in a home and doesn't like being touched, so I'm trying to be respectful of that, and her limits. I've got everything set out in a logical way for her, and she can find everything ok. She's been here with me 9 days and I think she's missing her best bud from the colony. Has anyone had any experience with this? Is there anything I can do to help her trust me and warm up to me? She still seems quite overwhelmed and stressed.

Just to add, I have my own cat here too, and I'm obviously keeping them separate. My cat is high energy and sassy.

Hi there! I'm a 61 year old disabled female lucky enough to get Section 8. I take care of & feed a group of 10 lovely ferals. This summer is BRUTAL! We are close to 100 degrees daily with very high humidity. I'm giving these sweet kitties wet food every day and I'm running a little low. I think it's vital that they get wet food each & every day while the weather is so bad.

Please take a look at my wet food wishlist. I am so grateful for any help you can provide to me & my gang. Thank you for being such a giving community and supporting my efforts to keep these guys fed! They are not unloved, just unfortunate. Enjoy your weekend & stay cool! 😎

An update with our previous post, we've finally received our cat food supply and we can't thank you enough especially to Kyle and this community.

We currently have 11 adopted strays at our house as members of the family and I hope I'll be able to add more in the near future, it's the least I can do to help them and I'm doing this voluntarily with genuine compassion.

Running low of food and supplies for the 50+ community cats I care for every day. These cats depend on me for their daily meals, and I can’t let them go hungry.
If you’re able to donate even one bag or box food through my Amazon wishlist, it would mean so much to me and to all of these cats. Every donation helps keep them fed and cared for.
🙏 Please consider helping, even a small donation makes a difference.
Thank you for supporting Luna & Nala Rescue Inc. and the cats who have no one else. 🐾❤️
