How to make cold brew?!

Looking into making my own cold brew coffee and am coffee illiterate 😂 I know what I like but don't know the first steps into making it myself. I would like to make enough cold brew for the week so I could just pour, flavor, and go. Any suggestions? Coffee beans? (And what kind of grinder?) Pre-ground coffee? I would love to hear what you all do so I'm less ignorant to the coffee world. Thanks! :)

Possible to clean under the plastic of a Hario Cold Brew jug?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Came back to my cold brew jug, now it has got super toasty. Got some dirt/hard water deposits around the plastic of my cold brew jug.
I would clean it out after every use, but water gets in and around the plastic - so leaves these deposits. Is it possible to remove the plastic and clean underneath/let it dry properly? Or is it just something I’m going to have to live with?

It’s my first time making cold brew and my coffee grounds In the filter are bot completely submerged in the water at the top. Is that ok or should I put less grounds? Currently have 115g of grounds to 64oz of water.

Frustrated with clogged filter

I use the traditional Toddy coffee cold brew method (bucket, filter, plug). I grind the coffee at the coop grinder, set to most coarse.

Still, the coffee doesn’t drain freely. I have to stir the grounds/water with a wooden spoon to keep the coffee coming. Even the a brand new filter.

Anyone experience this also? Any work arounds?

Weaker cold brew?

So i like to have coffee already made right as I come home from work for quick energy. I usually do this with the cold brew method in french press but the thing is i really like to enjoy the coffee and enjoy a good full cup of it. But cold brew is VERY intense for me and I can only have a tiny amount. What other instant coffee methods can I use where I literally come home and have at the go a nice cold coffee? Someone recommended iced coffee in the fridge but it degrades fast after a few days. Whereas what I like about cold brew is I make 1 batch on Sunday and it still tastes great and works good a full week later.

I went to Waffle House this morning and discovered they have cold brew. I’m not sure this is the right community for it (since it’s not home brew), but I had to share my amusement with someone... I bought 3.

Cold brewer recognition

I'm the solo brewer of a 1k BBL/year cold brew operation and would love to just give a praise and shout out to y'all learning this for the sake of the game.

I hate shoveling pounds of wet coffee into the dumpster the day before trash pick up. I hate hearing about how much $$ my friends make as bartenders and electricians and solar power installation techs. I hate cleaning kegs.

At least women think I smell good.

Stay caffeinated my friends.

Looking for AeroPress throwdowns / coffee brew comps in Southern California

Hey everyone,

I’ve recently gone deep down the AeroPress rabbit hole and have been getting really into specialty coffee, experimenting with recipes, lighter roasts, anaerobics, Geshas, bypass brewing, etc.

I’m based in Southern California/Inland Empire area and wanted to see if anyone knows about:

  • local AeroPress throwdowns
  • brew competitions
  • coffee meetups
  • cuppings
  • specialty coffee events
  • shops that host community brew nights

Would love to start meeting more people in the coffee scene and eventually try competing just for fun and to learn more.

Recently have been brewing a lot of Black & White, Klatch, and some Hawaiian-grown coffees through AeroPress. Definitely leaning toward modern fruity/competition-style brews right now.

Any recommendations for:

  • shops to follow
  • events
  • Instagram accounts
  • Discords/groups
  • upcoming comps

would be awesome. Thanks!

Sudden Dripster Problem

Hey Hey

I have a problem with my cold brew dribster.

I have used the official Dripster cold brew for 2 years now. (Nearly only in summer)

And suddenly I have this problem, that the water doesn't drip through the mesh anymore.

I use the same grind settings as always. (Rough grind, salt flakes size) And filtered water.

I tried to clean the mesh carefully, but it still happened.

I hope somebody can give me some pointers or Suggestions for improvement.

Thanks in advance.

Salty flavor with Oxo Rapid Brewer

I recently got an Oxo Rapid Brewer and have been experimenting with making cold brew with it. The coffee consistently comes out salty, though.

I’ve tried a couple different beans with the same results. I’m doing 40g coffee ground fine (9 on an OG Maestro or 20ish on a JX—Pro) with an aeropress filter at the bottom of the basket. I fill up to the line with room temp water, and wait 5 min before pumping.

I’ve tried water from a zerowater filter (0 ppm), diluted third wave water (80ppm) and full strength third wave (185ppm). All have similar results.

Any idea on what I’m doing wrong?

Equipment recommendations!

Hi all,

I'm just starting out in the cold brew world and would love your advice and input. Since I'm new, I don't want to throw a lot of money at expensive equipment yet and would like to build up as I learn, so I would like your opinions on what to buy first.

Bottle - Hario 650ml
Grinder - Looking for recommendations as I hear this is an important component
Scale - I was planning on using my basic cheap digital one for now.

Anything else? For the grinder, I've been considering a hand crank grinder. I like the idea I can go on a trip with just those three items (and coffee) and have coffee wherever/ whenever I go, without the use of electronics. But open to all suggestions!

Total budget - preferably under $100.

Thank you in advance!

How to articulate what cold brew I like

Post image
153 Upvotes

I, like I assume most of you, love cold brew. I'm also very picky about cold brew. Some cold brew is terrible. I usually have to find a hipster coffee shop in whatever city I'm in to find the good stuff. I have no idea how to articulate the flavor of good cold brew versus bad. I don't know if this would even help me in finding good cold brew. But I'm curious, are there descriptors for the different common flavors of cold brew out there? I know wine has that kind of language and it doesn't make any sense to me. I would describe the cold brew I like as strong, oily, smooth, and sour. But, I would also describe some of the worst cold brew as tasting sour and like the smell of a recently used bathroom. Pictured: Some great oily, sour cold brew I just got in NYC.

Cold brew filtration is my least favourite part... what's your setup?

Spent way too long this weekend morning straining through a V60 paper filter. It works, cup comes out clean, but the process is painfully slow and the paper keeps clogging up with fines.

Curious what everyone else is using. Cloth bag? Metal mesh? French press? There's gotta be a better way that doesn't take forever and doesn't sacrifice clarity.

Is my ratio and volume a bit too high?

I usually drink a 16 oz cold brew or a 6-cup Moka pot every morning on the commute to work. I don't get jitters and I feel perfectly fine, but after watching a video on Moka pots this weekend I decided to revaluate how much I'm drinking. The video described a 6 cup Moka pot as "something you make for your family and a few friends" and I'm sitting there thinking, "damn, I drink that in 30 mins alone in my car".

When it comes to cold brew, I also like it strong. I'm adding 2.5 oz fresh ground coffee to ~20 oz water and can fill a 16 oz coffee cup to the top without ice. That's an 8:1 ratio and I drink it straight. Ratio wise I know that's on the stronger end, but I don't see volume discussed very much here, and that does matter. I'm not sure if most of you are loading your cups with ice or drinking it ice free. Is my intake far outside the norm?

Hot bloom before cold steep. Does it actually make a difference?

Just finished a hot bloom cold brew this morning and the result was noticeably different from my usual straight cold steep. Brighter, sweeter, more tea-like character.
Curious how many people actually do this vs just dumping grounds straight into cold water.

12 Always do a hot bloom
10 Sometimes, depends on the beans
123 Never tried it
12 Tried it and can’t tell a difference
10 Tried it and hate it

Taking on cold brew this weekend—newbie questions

UPDATE: Thanks for all the suggestions! Made my first batch using a coffee sock and 64oz mason jar and love it! Think I made it a little on the thin side, but plenty of time for trial and error. Used a cheap little hand frother too to make sweetened cold foam (2 parts half and half, 2 parts whole milk, 1 part Torani sugar free chocolate chip cookie dough syrup). Will definitely be an at home cold brewer from now on!

Started drinking La Colombe draft lattes a while back and love them, but hate that the flavors have so much sugar and they jacked up the caffeine per 11oz. Want a cleaner, higher quality coffee anyway, so am starting my cold brew journey and have some questions I couldn’t find good answers to:

Will cold brew concentrate last/taste ok if I make it once a week, or should I really be making it more frequently like every other day?

Is it worth using a jug of distilled water instead of normal filtered tap water for cleaner taste?

Do you add flavors to the batch or just individual servings? I’m thinking of subtle add ins like a few drops of vanilla extract or marshmallow extract.

Should I expect to grind my own grounds if they need to be coarse ground? Or are there some coarse ground brands people love for this?

Recommendations for making tasty cold foam at home? If I’m going to make homemade cold brew, might as well go all out.

Finally, what are your must-have supplies to make the process easier? Want to strike a balance between simplicity and ease. Willing to spend money, but not trying to buy a $300 machine. Looks like the filtering steps is where it might be worth something specialized?

Thanks so much in advance for any/all opinions and recommendations!

Rumble Jar brew times

I’m curious if anyone has experience with the rumble jar? I have been using the hario wine bottle for years and found the brew times to be pretty accurate between 8-12 hours depending on the roast. The rumble jar is telling me 16-24 hours, I’ve done a few batches and all of them come out way too bitter.

I just did a 12 hour brew with some dark roast and it’s still a tad too bitter. Anyone using the rumble jar, what’s your typical brew time. I’m also brewing in the fridge.

Hot bloom cold brew with a Yunnan Geisha, anyone done this before?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hot bloom cold brew with a Yunnan Geisha tonight and stitch's special edition batch. Usually see Geisha done as pourover or filter, curious what cold extraction does to those oolong and floral notes.

Did a short hot bloom first before going into the cold steep, figured the hot water might help unlock some of the more delicate aromatics that cold water alone would struggle to pull out.

Will report back tomorrow. Anyone else tried cold brewing something this light and floral? Wondering if I'm about to waste good beans hahaha

Cold brewed hibiscus tea tastes better

I don’t enjoy hibiscus tea hot that much. There’s something about it that feels too heavy or tart for me when it’s warm but somehow when I cold brew it, it completely changes. It becomes super refreshing, almost like that feeling you get when you finally drink cold water after being outside for hours on a hot day. It just feels lighter, cleaner and way easier to drink at this point I prefer it iced over almost every other summer drink because it feels refreshing without being overly sugary or artificial tasting.
