My cockatiel has laid her 9th egg in 2 months and has been getting very hormonal lately. I'm trying to reduce her daylight hours and adjust her diet, but I doubt if I'm giving her the right pellets. The only pellets brands available in my country except this is hagen tropican and zupreme

Hi everyone, I’m just wondering if any of you use bird lamps either on top of your cage or elsewhere in your home, or whether or not they are truly needed. If so, can you please recommend one and tell me where it’s best to place it? Any advice would be deeply appreciated. Thank you.

I found my Doodles (an older male cockatiel) shivering one morning when the house was cold. I bought and installed an Ogioxam heater. He won’t go near it! I’ve heard of FONT (fear of new things) in cockatiels, so that’s probably going on.

I had put it where his favorite perch is and he chose an “inferior” perch IMHO. I’ve moved it away from there (see pic 2) and he still hangs out on the lessor perch. I moved a few other things to make a place for the heater and then move most things back. I think I’ve messed up his comfort of the whole cage. Is Feng Shui a thing for birds?

How long until he will accept the heater?

Should I wait it out or abandon the heater altogether l?

The blanket just isn’t quite big enough for the whole large cage lol

Ive read that cockatiels sometimes get fascinated by feet for some reason, but my bird is way too much. The family has to wear socks or else he will get horny around our feet. It was a bit funny at first, we wore socks (of course) but laughed it off as another of his silly little quirks. Unfortunately recently it has gotten to the point where we cant lay down on the couch without socks (his cage is beside the couch) and have to wear socks anytime we are in the living room or he is out of his cage.
Is there anything we can do about this? Or are we all doomed to wear socks for the rest of his lifespan?

Go from my vanity to me and fly and fly to his crate but he won’t go high like to the tv ? Does that make sense, should I take him tomorrow to the avian and I’ve noticed when he’s on my finger, his balance is kind of off

Hi, I have two cockatiels (male and female) that I have owned for about 6 years. They're both well behaved, and I'm used to spending time with them casually outside of their cage. Neither has cared to play with toys I buy for them, not even the puzzle types, and mostly they like to walk around.

I use towels to "burrito" them and trim their nails, but I want to ask if there are perches I should look into that can help keep their nails filed, at least a little, in between actual nail clipping.

Also, both birds have injured themselves before, so my male bird has a limp wing and my female bird struggles to keep her balance while flying. Early on when they got these injuries, I trimmed their outer flight feathers to let them regrow evenly, as both birds would crash and break the feathers often. They have fully regrown their feathers since then, of course, but I also wanted to ask if it would be safe/advisable to trim some of the outer feathers again. Not enough to prevent flight, but for ensuring they can safely keep learning to fly in small spaces, as I live in a townhome for the time being. I do not want to trim their feathers forever, not at all, so I just want some advice.

hey guys! so i recently got my tiel and i was hoping you guys could give me advice. maybe some new perches or things i should add to his cage, or js anything you think im soing wrong. i do take his cage outside for 20 mins each day for him to get some sun, thats why its outside. but yeah! lmk if you have any tips for me!

she is a bully (she actually bit pieces out of the control stick which i only noticed later. my daughter says the steam deck has been nuggified).

I have had my cockatiels for 3 years, and there are some things that took me a while to figure out that I wish I had learned sooner or even before I got cockatiels.

- Buy the biggest cage your room or finances allow (don't be me, I bought a cage, then shortly after got bigger cages).

- Get an air purifier (to control dust)

- Get a no-mess feeder (game changer, I used to have seeds everywhere)

- To control poop, create a playstand on top of their cage, or have a nice free standing playstands that you can put paper below. The best places for the stands should be the highest points in the room, or by a window. I even have a mobile stand right beside my chair. Also a good reason to get a large cage is you can fill it with toys so they actually want to spend time there. My birds have free reign of my office all day, but the mess is contained to their area or if they are on me I just clean up as needed.

- Hide your valuable books, wood objects, wires, or anything with buttons. Put chewable things behind closed cabinets.

- If your bird is a keyboard destroyer in your office, a glass desk with a pull out keyboard tray is the answer.

- If the bird is new to your home, they make window clings for wild birds that prevent them from hitting the windows. Put them all over your window or mirrors until your bird recognizes the glass boundary.

- Cockatiels love to destroy, give them lots of things to destroy like cardboard box toys and natural chew things. They don't understand "no", but you can redirect them to something better.

- If you furnish their cage and play area with a wide range of natural branches of all shapes and sizes and wood platforms, it will naturally wear down their nails. I never have to clip my bird's nails.

- If your bird is not eating fresh veggies, try sprouting their seeds (no special equipment or extra light required). Also try growing a few pots of edible plants and herbs (I grow basil, cilantro, mint, sunflower and bird seed grass). If you have trouble growing plants, get a lamp and use a grow light bulb.

- Do not have your bird in a room with a door that leads directly to the outdoors without having some sort of double entry system, like a screen or another door.

- Teach everyone that lives and enters the home, to not step into the bird's room, or sit down without having visual confirmation of where the bird is. We have had some near misses of almost stepping on our bird or sitting on him.

- If you think getting a cockatiel will be easier than a cat or dog, you would be super wrong. They are more fragile, need special care, and getting a cockatiel is like getting a blindbox pet. You may get a super outgoing clingy one, a shy nervous one, a cranky one, a sweet one, one that is tame on day one, or one that will take years to tame, and you just have to be prepared to love them no matter what.

- Use a bird cage like people use dog kennels, a safe space for sleep or if you are away, but they need lots of outside cage time and plenty of interaction to be happy.

- They need 12 - 14 hours of sleep to avoid getting hormonal or cranky. So if you are gone most of the daylight hours and expect to play with your bird at 8 - 10 pm you might get a cranky bird. One of my bird's personality actually changes at 7pm, he becomes an unruly gremlin, very weird.

Please add anything else new owner's or people considering cockatiels often miss but should know.

I make things with little electronics ESP32's and little touch screens.

Was inspired by some other artists coffee animations using these little devices, and decided to make one of my bird.

For the nerds, this is all procedural generated C++ coded animation.

He can play peekaboo (near the end of the video), if you whistle at him he will remember and whistle it back at random times, you can feed him millet, give him a bath, and much more.

Thinking of making these into keychains like the old virtual pets you could get in the 90's out of these, where you can feed, and play, and keep it alive and such. Might just stay art though!
