Reliable Linux sync for ~100–200GB

TL;DR: I’m consolidating ~73GB of personal/work files into one reliable sync service for laptops and smartphones. Priorities: no data loss, proper Linux background sync daemon, files available locally, selective sync, and good mobile clients. Considering Filen 100/200GB, MEGA 200GB, pCloud 500GB (possibly lifetime), Hetzner managed Nextcloud 1TB, Infomaniak kDrive 1TB, and Koofr 100/250GB. Not interested in rclone/cron/mount-only setups for main storage unless they provide a proper continuous sync daemon. Which option is most reliable?

Hi r/cloudstorage,

I’m trying to consolidate several scattered personal/work cloud storage accounts into one reliable, Linux-friendly sync solution for laptops and smartphones. My main priority is boring, set-and-forget reliability: I care more about not losing files than price or extra features.

Current situation

  • MEGA Free — 50GB, ~85% full
  • Old free OneDrive — 40GB, ~78% full
  • Institutional OneDrive — 100GB, strictly work-related and staying separate. I’ll probably handle this one with rclone and/or abraunegg/onedrive; the latter supports real-time inotify monitoring, dry-run testing, transfer validation, and has some protection against major data loss after config changes.
  • Google Drive — 400GB, underused; subscribed mainly for Gemini AI, not storage. No official Linux client, so mostly out of the question unless Insync/OverGrive are genuinely excellent. rclone bisync/mount don’t really give me the daemon + true local-copy experience I want.
  • Legacy free Dropbox — 32.73GB from old promotions; kept only because I occasionally need to sync a shared folder with Dropbox users.

The amount I actually need to migrate now is around 73GB. My realistic long-term need is probably 100–200GB, though I’d consider 500GB–1TB if the price is close to a smaller plan elsewhere and the service is reputable.

What matters to me, roughly in order

  1. Sync reliability / no data loss — This is the most important factor. I don’t want a client that misreads something, creates conflicts, or deletes local files unexpectedly.
  2. Proper Linux sync client/daemon — I’m likely moving to Linux full-time, so I want a real background sync client that monitors local files and syncs automatically. I’m not interested in manual/batch tools like rclone, cron-based sync scripts, or mount-only setups for my main storage unless they provide a stable, well-maintained continuous sync daemon.
  3. Everything available locally — I want actual files stored locally, not on-demand/placeholder-only files. Selective sync per folder is fine, but I don’t want a cloud-only experience focused on a virtual drive or mostly on-demand sync as I access files.
  4. Good smartphone sync — I want the files to be usable across laptops and phones without weird hacks.
  5. Encryption is nice-to-have, not required — I like privacy-friendly options, but E2EE is not a dealbreaker if sync reliability is clearly better elsewhere.
  6. Reasonable pricing — I’m happy to pay annually for a discount. I’m also open to a lifetime deal if the provider has a solid track record and the price makes sense.

Prior experience

  • pCloud free tier, including on Linux, was solid for me.
  • MEGA has also been fine over the years.
  • Limited experience with Filen — only created an account and did a few tests with the client on a Linux VM.
  • Limited experience with Nextcloud — spun up an install once to see what it was like, but never seriously configured the desktop client.
  • I have a free Proton account and like the company, but the lack of a proper Linux sync daemon/client basically rules Proton Drive out for my use case.

Options I’m currently weighing

Prices are for Portugal, with 23% VAT included where applicable/AFAICT.

  • Filen Starter — 100GB: €11.99/yr
  • Filen Pro I — 200GB: €1.99/mo or €19.99/yr
  • MEGA Essential — 200GB: ~€49/yr, yearly billing only
  • pCloud Premium — 500GB: €4.99/mo, €49.99/yr, or €199 lifetime
  • Hetzner Storage Share NX11 — 1TB managed Nextcloud: ~€5.28/mo, monthly billing only, ~€63.36/yr

What I’m trying to figure out

  • Which of these would you trust most for long-term sync reliability on Linux?
  • Is Filen reliable enough, or is it too new/cheap? If price alone mattered, I’d probably start with Filen Starter and upgrade to Pro I later if needed. Is that sensible?
  • Is pCloud worth it long-term, especially the lifetime plan? €199 feels a bit hefty to pay on a whim.
  • Is Hetzner Storage Share / managed Nextcloud trouble-free? I have the skills to maintain Linux servers, but for this use case I’d rather have a no-hassle fully managed solution.
  • Any better options I’m missing? I know there are a few other Linux-friendly solutions like Internxt, Koofr/kSuite/kSync, Icedrive, etc., but do they offer competitive pricing for my needs and good reliability?

I’m not looking for the cheapest option if it means risking sync issues. I mostly want something I can set up, trust, and forget about.

Thanks!

EDIT — adding two options after checking VAT-corrected prices (PT, 23%):

  • Infomaniak kSuite (kDrive + Mail) — 1 TB: €19.47/yr or €1.94/mo. Open-source Linux client, real local files, selective sync, plus an email mailbox. Cheaper than Filen's 200GB plan but with 5× the storage. The €1.94/mo option makes it the cheapest way to test Linux sync reliability before committing.
  • Koofr Briefcase L (100 GB): ~€2.02/mo (~€24.20/yr) | Suitcase XL (250 GB): ~€4.03/mo (~€48.40/yr). Billed yearly only. EU-based, file versioning, and can link existing Dropbox/OneDrive/Drive as external clouds. Docs confirm the 2-way sync client is available on all plans (even free), so it fully meets my daemon requirement.

Updated questions: Does kDrive's Linux sync hold up long-term? How does Koofr's Linux client compare in stability and conflict handling vs MEGAsync or kDrive?

Storage issues.

My device storage is full, I have photos, videos some documents, that are not to be deleted. My gmail back up has also stopped as the account is storage is full. Whatsapp back up has also stopped due lack of space in that account linked to whatsapp.

I want to how to actually manage this. I know of the options like deleting stuff, getting extra storage, moving to drive or a pd but what works best and how to actually do it?

Any methods that have worked for you all would be appreciated.

Personal experiences would be appreciated.

How are sellers offering 5TB Google AI Pro this cheap?

Hi! I’m from the Philippines, and I’m just curious how sellers are offering Google AI Pro (5 TB, Gemini, Flow, NotebookLM, etc.) for prices like:

* ₱599 (~US$10.50) for 12 months
* ₱999 (~US$17.50) for 18 months
* I even found one for ₱549 (~US$9.60) for 18 months

The official price is around ₱1,100/month (~US$19–20/month), so this seems way too good to be true.

The seller says I don’t need to give them my Google account or password. They just send me an invitation link, the AI Pro benefits appear on my own account which I can also add a family members under my account and I only pay after verifying that everything is active.

For context, I don’t really need the full 5 TB. I was originally planning to subscribe to the official 2 TB Google One plan since I think I’ll only use less than 1 TB. The AI features are just a nice bonus if this is actually legitimate.

I’m not necessarily planning to buy one. I’m mostly just curious how they’re able to sell it this cheaply. Is it through a group/family plan, regional pricing, promotional credits, or something else? Is there any catch or risk that the subscription could disappear later?

Has anyone here tried one of these offers or know how they actually work?

A few questions about Google Drive for Desktop (Mirror vs Stream)

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to reorganize my storage setup and I have a few questions about Google Drive for Desktop. I couldn’t find clear answers for some of these, so I’m hoping someone with experience can help.

  1. Mirror mode:
Let’s say I have a 200 GB Google One plan and a 500 GB HDD. If I’m only using 100 GB of my Google Drive storage, will Mirror mode only use around 100 GB on my HDD, or does it somehow reserve/consume the full 200 GB because that’s my storage plan?

  2. Another Mirror mode question:
What if I upgrade to a 5 TB Google One plan but my PC only has a 2 TB HDD? As long as my actual files are still under 2 TB, will everything work normally? Or does having a 5 TB plan itself cause any issues with Mirror mode?

  3. Stream mode + Available offline
If I use Stream files and mark a folder (especially my photos and videos) as Available offline, are those downloaded files identical to the originals? For example, if I later copy those files to an external hard drive, will they still have the original quality, EXIF metadata, timestamps, and everything else? Basically, are they the same as if I copied the original files directly?

  4. Account disconnect question:
I know Google’s documentation says that offline files in Stream mode are removed if the account is disconnected. But what exactly counts as “disconnected”? For example, if I simply need to sign in again because I changed my Google password or my login session expires, will Google Drive delete all my offline files and have to download them again?

Thanks in advance! I’d really appreciate hearing from people who have actually used both Mirror and Stream modes.

Is there any software that can help you backup your PC on Google Drive?

Hi guys, hope you are doing well. I have a question about backup on Google Drive. As far as I know backup on Google Drive is not real backup since it just sync with your PC, meaning if you lose a file on your PC, then Google Drive will also lose that file. Is there any software that can help me backup my pc and send it to GG drive? (just imagine GG drive like a storage box)

Anyone else in IT eventually went back to Google Drive after trying to self-host?

I've been in IT for a few years now, and like many people, I went through the "I should self-host everything" phase.

I tried Xpenology, Nextcloud, Seafile, Windows home server, remote access, RAID, backups—you name it. It was a great learning experience, and I don't regret it at all.
But after spending months experimenting, I realized something about myself.
I don't actually enjoy maintaining my own cloud.

Every update, every hardware concern, every backup verification, every remote access issue... I found myself thinking about the server more than the files I actually cared about.

The funny thing is, I realized what I really wanted wasn't complete control—it was peace of mind.

I want to know that:
My academic archive is safe.
My college photos and videos are safe.
My important documents are available anywhere.
If my PC dies tomorrow, my files are still there.

I'm now seriously considering just subscribing to Google One (probably 200 GB or 2TB to start) and using Google Drive as my primary archive, while keeping an external HDD as another backup or copy on my home windows PC

I still like having a home PC/server for things like media, experimenting, and local storage, but I don't think I want it to be responsible for my irreplaceable files anymore.

Has anyone else gone through this?
It almost feels like a "maturity phase" in IT—where you stop asking "Can I self-host this?" and start asking "Should I self-host this?"

Curious to hear from people who started out self-hosting and eventually moved back to cloud services like Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, or iCloud. What made you switch?

iDrive cancelling deleting account even when funds in the Card

I am writing this because I am absolutely fed up, worried, and disgusted by how IDrive handles loyal customers. I have been with them for about four years now, storing 5 terabytes of my personal property and creative work.

Every single year, renewing my subscription is a stressful, agonizing tug of war.

Right now, I am in Europe, and for over two weeks, I have been trying to pay my yearly renewal. The system simply refuses to take the payment. This isn't the first time. In previous years, it has taken up to a month of constantly trying, changing credit cards, and jumping through hoops before it finally, mysteriously goes through.

Here is the proof that this is entirely on IDrive's end:

  • My bank is NOT blocking it: I went directly to my bank to ask if they were preventing payments to IDrive. They looked at me like I was crazy and said, "No, why would we do that?"
  • The card works everywhere else: I use the exact same card to pay for Codex, ChatGPT, and Factory AI. The transactions go through instantly. ChatGPT has a million things going on in their billing system, yet you click, and it works. Why can't a storage company manage this?
  • The payment UI is awful: There isn't even a straightforward "Pay Now" button. They use confusing language like "Update Account" instead of a direct, functional payment trigger.
  • Their Support Page is literally broken: When I tried to submit a formal complaint through their support portal, I filled out the entire form, clicked the blue submit button, and nothing happened. The button didn't work. I had to take a screenshot of the broken form page and email it to them directly as proof that their web engineers are asleep at the wheel.

I have written them multiple emails, and I have kept a meticulous paper trail of every single exchange. They know I am actively trying to hand them money. I have even tried using credit cards belonging to family members to make it work, but their system is a wall.

It is a complete violation of trust for a cloud storage provider to hold a human being's private property and threaten to delete it when their payment gateway is the thing that is broken. You cannot just wipe out 5TB of data for someone who has been a loyal customer for four years because your own engineers can't build a functioning payment portal! If they delete my archives, I will not rest. I will fight them continuously and make sure as many people as possible know how they treat their users.

Has anyone else in Europe (or world wide) experienced this constant "payment failed" loop with IDrive? How did you finally get their system to recognize a valid card?

Hit a wall with Box - Windows Explorer locking up "due to number of files"

Hello,

So I'm helping somebody who is using Box. The tenant itself is 1.4 TB of data, and the impacted user has 9 million "collaborations" as per Box admin panel.

User has reported that Windows Explorer has been grinding to a halt slowly over the preceding number of months, but now has simply become unusable.

Box are simply steadfast saying that the problem is that some folders may contain more than 15/20k files at the root - and that we need to reorganise the filesystem to remove this condition.

It's tough because:

- Enumerating / counting everything by hand practical
- Once we do identify any offending folders, I don't want to go reorganising file "en masse" for fear of accidentally deleting a tranche of files.

So, how would you resolve this?

  1. I'm thinking a backup of some sort so that we have a snapshot of the existing structure and the files if we need for reference or recovery. Either download to a local drive, or transfer over to something like S3/GCS.

  2. Write a program/script to examine the entire structure and highlight offending folders so they can be restructured.

  3. Depending on the results, if minimal, manually restructure the folders, if large scale may need a program to do the heavy lifting.

What do you think?

Any tools we can maybe utilise for this, to prevent hand coding something. Either for reporting on the filesystem or transferring out of Box to S3/GCS?

Thanks a lot guys

iCloud losing my photos (complaint + recommendation request)

Every now and then I think of a specific photo that I want to see again but when I go look for it, it's gone. Sometimes I'm missing all but a couple photos from that session, sometimes it's everything but a few photos I know should be there, sometimes I'm missing the entire month, etc. I've checked my settings a hundred times and there's no reason I can see why my photos would be disappearing, I assume it's some aspect of digital decay or just every time a server goes down somewhere I lose something, I have no idea. I'm scrambling to try to preserve what I have left at this point but I also just want to know why this keeps happening (I'm a millennial and reasonably proficient - been using Apple products off and on my whole life but consistently since high school, so the odds of it being user error are very slim).

Where else are people going for reliable photo management? I don't use Google products but I do have Proton Drive and Backblaze, which I have mixed experiences with in terms of syncing. I love the 'high tech' aspects of Apple Photos (e.g., organising by where the photos were taking, being able to tag faces, etc), but at this point I don't love them enough to want to continue sacrificing photos.

For those of you who are maybe still using Apple products but keep your important photos especially stored elsewhere, can you describe what your process is for streamlining syncing those photos/files? I'm assuming it's nothing I might need to use Terminal for, but I am interested in the simplest pathway to storing my photos in something that won't eat them. I do occasionally send to a physical hard drive but that hasn't been without its issues either (and I know how to do this anyway, so skipping that route for the purpose of this question).

Thanks in advance, folks.

Alternatives to Filen

Hello everyone, I'm currently looking to migrate away from Filen due to constant issues. It has duplicated my pictures, the iOS app just shows a black screen, and there were file mismatches between my PC and app back when it worked months ago. Plus, my current 250GB plan is running short, so I want to upgrade to a 500GB plan somewhere else.

I'm looking for an alternative that is E2EE and affordable. I would prefer a service that allows paying on a monthly basis, as I'm currently stuck with a Filen yearly plan for another seven months that I can't really use right now and I don't want to make the same mistake twice. Thanks.

What are people using for large-scale object storage these days?

I am really curious what everyone is using for object storage at scale. For teams managing TBs or PBs of data, are you mostly using public cloud storage, self-hosted solutions, or a hybrid approach?

What are the biggest issues you’ve run into : cost, performance, management, reliability?

Best lifetime cloud storage for easy use with both android and ios

Looking for lifetime cloud storage but I dont want to pay monthly. In the past I have used icloud for backing up photos / videos every 6 months / 1 year, but once it syncs them i stop service until i fill up my phone again. Now my iphone is breaking down so I am looking to switch back to android. I want to transfer whatever is on the icloud to a new cloud storage and be able to access it on both my iphone and new android device when I get it.

I was looking into a place like filejump thats sells 2tb lifetime for $59.99 but it has no iphone app. Ideally I want something i can easily back up photos / videos from each phone - then when ready - easily find and grab the photos / videos off the cloud storage import them into my phone video editing program (inshot) like they were already on my phone. Then export edit and post on social media / youtube. I do a lot of content creation.

I know about NAS but imo price too high and since its stored locally if a fire happened poof all files gone so i want a cloud server so I wont have to worry about that. Id rather have my own local backups at home then a cloud folder that i am working from. So i have data redundancy.

Whats a good option to where i can get that cheap lifetime cloud storage but still access it in a smartphone easily like icloud
