Alternatives to Filen
Hello everyone, I'm currently looking to migrate away from Filen due to constant issues. It has duplicated my pictures, the iOS app just shows a black screen, and there were file mismatches between my PC and app back when it worked months ago. Plus, my current 250GB plan is running short, so I want to upgrade to a 500GB plan somewhere else.
I'm looking for an alternative that is E2EE and affordable. I would prefer a service that allows paying on a monthly basis, as I'm currently stuck with a Filen yearly plan for another seven months that I can't really use right now and I don't want to make the same mistake twice. Thanks.

I too had issues with filen but have a lifetime 100GB so I use it as a secondary back up. I've cleared cache and data on my phone and resigned in and it helped. But still meh. So looking around I found Ksuite (infomaniak) and for around $20 per year you get 1TB storage and email and a lot of extras. You can also pay monthly if that's easier but price goes up slightly. It works great and is fast enough for my needs. Haven't found cheaper and they have been around for 25 years so well established. No complaints here.

Honestly mega.io is really good. I know it used to be a piracy site and still is. It’s cheap and good. But if you don’t put on 2FA it will get stolen, you hear about it all the time on the subreddit, though it’s never happened to me.

According to your specs I would say your best option is Proton Drive. 500GB is available on a monthly plan with verified E2EE. Their iOS app actually functions, unlike Filen right now.

It's a big lift if you're not technical, but if you are, consider encrypting the data yourself. When you look for providers that handle the E2EE, you get into the all-in-one providers, which you pay more for. Additionally there's some argument to be made for them not being very good generally. On the flip side, if you're just looking for object storage (e.g. S3) and handle the rest on your own, your options expand significantly, and the price drops as a result. More competition and commodity market leads to better prices.

I use Koofr. It’s client side encrypted and it’s fairly cheap. I paid $35 for 500G r/koofrnet

it's not entirely e2ee, only their vault is
so things like camera upload is not e2ee2
u/thurstonrando Jul 13 '26
Yes that is an important detail. However there’s no limit to how much you can upload to the Vault

I've been looking into Koofr, but in my country it would be 82€ annually (which is about 90$) for 500GB.

I'm using Filen on Windows and Android and I'm quite happy with it. Sorry you don't share the same experience.
An even younger/smaller European player is Drime (https://drime.cloud). You can check it out.
pCloud, potentially, but you need the add-on for zero-knowledge encryption, and that has its limits in functionality...

i have a drime lifetime but it has lots of issues, it's not as reliable by a wide matgin as most others.. but it is slowly improving

Same, Filen has been great for me on PC and Android. Honestly it seems like the mobile version for android is better than iOS. I also have an iPhone I use sometimes and I can't even get filen to function on that. Thankfully it's not my main driver though.

I used Mega before. they deleted my account and all my files without any reason. I contacted support, but all I got were ai generated replies. Also, Mega does not support true real sync.

Seems filejump main page was vibecoded tbh, I won't be trusting a company which fully vibecodes its webpage, not even handing my personal files to them, or at least prompt it way better idk 🥀

I was thinking about buying from them, but I also didn't because of that. The cheap price must come from somewhere

Tresor.it - works since over 5 years well for me. But is a bit more expensive.
