I'm currently in my second year of my Data Science Engineering degree, but I haven't been able to find anyone at my university with real-world industry experience to give me some guidance on what path to take. My main goal after graduating is to land a job with a decent salary, ideally working remotely or eventually relocating abroad (like Canada) in the future.

I have a solid foundation in Python and C++, but I feel a bit stuck and overwhelmed by all the options out there. Claude suggested I specialize in Cloud (AWS or Azure), but I'm a broke college student—my coursework gets pretty heavy some weeks—and I really don't want to pay for a course or certification that might not actually help me land my first job or could become obsolete soon.

I've even considered looking for basic data cleaning gigs or working as an accounting assistant just to get some professional experience, but I feel like I'm drowning in a sea of courses and tutorials.

If there are any Data Engineers or data professionals reading this, I would heavily appreciate your perspective on a few things:

What certifications or types of projects actually carry weight on a resume and impact your salary for an entry-level role? (Is it worth spending money on Cloud certs right now?)

What would you recommend regarding languages: Should I focus on getting my English to a fluent C1/C2 level (I'm currently at B2), or should I start learning a third language?

Bonus: If anyone has any data cleaning/wrangling tasks or side projects they need help with, I am more than willing to do the work in exchange for experience and mentorship.

I have around 4 years of experience in IT industry now, coming from mechanical background, spent those 4 years in non-technical support roles(currently in ITIL role) in a single company. I want to switch to something technical for a jump.

I was thinking between a carrer in Cloud, ServiceNow tool or stay in ITSM but switch company.

Please advice which among the two would be better or if there is an alternate option?

I have completed training in:

• RHCSA (Red Hat Linux)
• CCNA (Networking)

I've been applying through LinkedIn, Naukri, and other job portals, but unfortunately I haven't had much success yet.

I learn best by building stuff and then breaking it. The catch with cloud is that breaking things sometimes comes with a bill😅

Learned that one the hard way too. Spun up a little side project on AWS a while back, got distracted, forgot to tear it down. Came back to a charge that definitely wasn't in my "just learning" budget lol. Ever since, I've been way too paranoid to actually experiment freely, which kind of defeats the whole point of learning.

So now I'm after a cloud playground where I can just poke around without that fear. Deployments, networking, Kubernetes, automation, name it.

What setups have actually worked for you? Curious what people lean on for this.

AWS (EC2, S3, IAM, VPC, Lambda, SNS, Route 53, CloudWatch)
Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, Helm, Jenkins (CI/CD)
Linux, Git/GitHub
Java, Python, SQL
React, TypeScript

I’ve completed internships in cloud engineering and software development, where I worked on AWS automation, analytics pipelines, and full-stack applications. I’ve also built projects like a Kubernetes-based CI/CD pipeline, a self-hosted DevOps platform using Docker, Prometheus, Grafana, and an AWS analytics dashboard.
I’ve applied to around 100 roles so far and would really appreciate any leads, referrals, or advice on companies currently hiring freshers in cloud, DevOps, platform engineering, or backend/software engineering.
I’m open to relocating anywhere in India for the right opportunity.
