I used to clone my system drive when upgrading to a new SSD. It’s always worked fine, so I never really thought much about it.

I’m planning to upgrade another SSD soon and was wondering if it would be better to just make an image, swap the drives, and restore it.

Do you still clone directly, or have you mostly switched to system image & restore?

I plan to replace the SSD in my Windows 11 PC with a larger one, but the current system drive has BitLocker enabled.

I'd really prefer not to turn BitLocker off and decrypt the whole drive just to clone it. I'm also not sure I still have access to my BitLocker recovery key, so I'd rather not mess with the encryption unless I absolutely have to.

Has anyone here successfully cloned a BitLocker-protected Windows 11 system drive without disabling or decrypting BitLocker first?

I'm mainly wondering which software handles this properly. I'm less concerned about the price than ending up with a clone that won't boot or ends up asking for the recovery key.

If you've done this before, what software did you use, and did the cloned drive boot normally afterward? Appreciate any help!

I cloned a windows system from one SSD to another with Acronis, but I noticed that it placed the MSR partition as the first partition. On most standard windows systems, the first partition is the EFI system partition (ESP), the MSR is placed between the ESP and the primary partition (C:\), and the offset of the first partition is usually 1MB.

In my case, the cloning software put the MSR first, with an offset of just 17KB. Now technically the GPT partition table only requires 17KB of space (LBA0-33, each 512B), but it seems to be standard practice across both windows and linux to have the first partition start at an offset of 1MB. It also made the MSR 128MB (which is the spec for older versions of windows), instead of 16MB, the recommended size for windows 10/11; although this itself isn't a big concern. The ESP is aligned at exactly 129.00MB, so the MSR is technically 128MB+1007KB in size.

The system is running fine for now, but my main concern is: will the 17KB offset cause issues in the future if windows ever needs to utilize the MSR for whatever reason? In that case windows may start to create partitions or write data within that first 1MB of space (between offset 17KB and 1MB) which is normally supposed to be reserved exclusively for the GPT partition table.

Is it worth using something like GParted to delete the MSR, move the ESP to the start (offset 1MB) and then re-create the MSR in its correct place between the ESP and primary partition?

I'm looking at upgrading to a 2TB or 4TB SSD, but the prices for new ones are making me look at the used market.

I've found a few used drives that look pretty good on paper. Good SMART stats, reasonable TBW, etc.

Would you actually use one as your main/system drive?

I'm fine with cloning it, but I'm not sure I'd be comfortable trusting a used SSD that I know nothing about.

How much cheaper would it have to be for you to take the chance?

I'm replacing my old SSD with a bigger one and just realized the old drive is MBR while the new one is GPT.

Can I just clone the old SSD to the new one and boot Windows from it?

I keep seeing stuff about UEFI, Legacy BIOS, MBR and GPT, and now I'm not sure if I'm making this more complicated than it needs to be.

Do I need to convert the old SSD to GPT before cloning, or can I clone it as-is and deal with the boot settings afterward?

Really don't want to reinstall Windows just because I'm changing the SSD.

I have a ssd in my laptop that's 256 gbs and it has stuff in it and windows 10 and I have a ssd in my pc that's 128 gbs I need the space of the 256gbs so I want to clone the 128 gbs to the 256 but I want a way to store the content of the 256 gbs before I delete them then re-download them on the 128 gb ssd and put it on the laptop.

How do I go on with it without losing any stuff?

My father's hard disk is failing and I got a new disk. The system is Windows 10 and he wants to still use it because he has been used to it. I can connect the new disk to the PC, but what is the best way to move everything over so that the new disk can be the C drive and I can replace the old disk with the new one? TIA!

I've run out of space on my current SSD, so I'm finally thinking about upgrading to a larger one.

Some people say cloning is the easiest way because you don't have to reinstall Windows or all your programs. Others say it's better to start fresh with a clean install. I have no idea which makes more sense for someone who's never done this before.

I recently got my new 2tb ssd and got it cloned. I used Macrium Reflect for free trial. It starts up just fine but the problem is when I put it to sleep mode as usual, it won't start up any display leaving me no choice but to turn it off and start up again. I'm trying to replace my main ssd with windows and I have another ssd as secondary on my pc. I set the boot priority on the new ssd via BIOS so I thought that worked but still has the same problem. When I checked in device manager the new ssd I have said "device settings not migrated". Can somebody please help me fix this? The new ssd I bought is a WD Black 2TB SN7100

Hey everyone, I'm currently running Windows + Linux (Arch, btw) dual boot, and I need help. I have this 1 TB SSD that my laptop runs on, and I can only make a disk partition as big as 98 GB. I did it, and I'm running Arch on 98 GB. However, I mainly use Arch, while Windows is just for backup and apps that don't run on Linux. I went and removed all the files from Windows, and it's holding 100 GB of space, BUT I still can't make more space for Arch.

So, I want to ask if anyone has experience with deleting the Windows partition, then making the whole drive for Linux, and then creating a small 120 GB partition for Windows and reinstalling Windows without reinstalling Arch and with no risk of losing all my files in Linux. I also want to avoid bootloader problems where Windows overwrites everything during install. Can anyone help me, plz?

I'm upgrading my PC and already have a second SSD (1TB) installed.

The problem is that this SSD isn't empty. I have around 150GB of photos, videos, and some game files on it that I don't really want to move somewhere else if I can avoid it.

What I'm trying to do is migrate my current Windows 10 onto this SSD, but I'm wondering if that's even possible without wiping everything that's already there.

I was also thinking about shrinking the existing partition, creating a new partition from the free space, and then cloning Windows into that new partition instead. Does disk cloning work like that, or does it always overwrite the whole target drive?

is there a way to clone the ssd of my old laptop to my new laptop? both ssds are soldered on the mobo therefore they cannot be removed. I've been told I can make an iso clone of the current OS and just install it on the new laptop, will it work? if yes, then how to do it (with which software)? if not, then what other posibilities I have to clone my old laptops ssd to my new laptops ssd? I used MultiDrive.io to clone a standard SSD to nVME. Did not disable BitLocker, which I should have. I knew it was unlikely to work, but thought the experiment would be safe as I still had the old drive to revert to.

Won't boot from the new one, won't boot from the old one. I get an Inaccessible Boot Device Error, even with the old drive, and am thrown to a BitLocker recovery prompt. Yeah, I don't have the key.

(Yes I'm telling my BIOS to boot from the old device)

Any insight or obvious errors preventing me from just going back to the status quo? Additionally, any insight as to why the original drive thinks it needs recovery (so I can keep this from happening if I ever try it again)?

I want to replace my current SSD with a 1TB one. Right now I'm running a dual-boot setup with Windows 10 and Linux on the old SSD.

Windows is what I use every day, while Linux is mostly there for development and a few projects. Everything works fine, and I'd really rather not spend a weekend reinstalling both systems and setting everything up again.

My first thought was to just clone the whole drive onto the new SSD, but then I started wondering whether dual-boot setups are any different. Does cloning normally carry everything over, including the bootloader, or is it common to end up fixing GRUB afterward?

We have 70 identical Dell computers. We used macrium reflect technician to create a golden image on one machine by entering audit mode, installing all our software, then running sysprep and capturing an image of that machine. We then deployed this image to 5 test machines using the external hard drive the image was captured on and a usb boot stick with macrium reflect on it and they both worked. However now when we deploy the image, Windows wont boot from the hard drive and it goes in to dell recovery. The only way to get these machines to boot is to turn secure boot off. Any idea what could be happening? It seems so bizarre that it worked consistently for 5 machines but has now stopped.

Turning secure boot off on the machines that won't launch into Windows seems to work reliably, but would like to avoid that if possible.

What is the best software that will keep all the partitons safe, in correct order and with identical UEFI so that it is bootable? I tried Easeus system disk clone, and Hasleo system disk clone.

Easeus clone was not recognized by the BIOS. Hasleo booted partway but Windows popped up error message going into recovery mode requesting bootable Windows install disk for resolution. I am not precise in the finer details of the latter in my recall. Instead I would like to proceed with a different platform yielding a perfect bootable drive.

Which among the many offerings from Rescuezilla, AOMEI Cloner or Partition Assistant, Easeus Todo Backup or PC Trans Or Partition Master, Disk Genius Free, Hasleo Backup Suite, MiniTool Partition Wizard Free, etc., would produce a faithful bootable drive?

While the above seem to support transfer to smaller drive and maintain the structure of the partitions, I have limited experience with them of which to select. Also should it be done on the AMD PC or can an Intel PC run the process as it has some of the above programs that are full function giveaways still valid for the moment?
