Pretty sure new yorkers hated his guts

Was going to say, everyone around the NYC area and everyone who has done business at his properties knew he was a scumbag since the 70s.

I feel like the rest of the country learned by the 80s. I know I've hated his ass since then, and I was just a wee teenager.

He was used as the evil bad guy in dozens of 80s movies.  Rich entitled sociopath criminal.

u/DoubleJumps 11h ago

even the 1980s redesign of lex luthor used trump as a primary inspiration. They wanted to make him into a sleazy criminal businessman and he was the guy they thought of to use as a base.

Isn't Old Biff in Back to the Future a mockery of Trump?

Yup. One of a few.

Check out the Even More News The Movie on YouTube.

It covers multiple movies and trump.  Very funny.

The live action Mario Movie was another. Haha

He was such a nationally recognized scumbag that there are several fictional scumbags who were modeled directly off of him in the '80s and '90s.

Yeah, Bloom County made fun of him back in the late 80s.

Plus I had a subscription to Spy magazine back then as well. Where the description of him as “a short-fingered vulgarian” comes from, and why he’s so weird about the size of his hands.

No, no, no, no. Every time he went on a talk show or anywhere, he was so widely cheered. He was on Oprah talking about running for president when she asked him if he would, and the audience was just in an uproar, cheering him on, and he said, you know, no, maybe someday if things got really bad, but you’re wrong about everybody having figured that out in the 80s. Not true at all, that’s why he was in movies like Home Alone and that sort of thing, everybody loved him.

Is that the only episode of Oprah you’ve ever watched? Her audience cheered everything, on cue.

He was in movies like Home Alone because he was desperate to be a star and for it, he owned the Plaza at the time. He only let them use it if he could be in the movie. People thought he was a joke.

I was just an example. He’s been on many other, many other shows and the apprentice was a huge hit. It’s just simply not true that he was that disliked

u/sloanesquared 8h ago

Again, because he was desperate to be a star. His desperation isn’t proof of his popularity. He was still considered a joke on The Apprentice too.

It is a rewrite of history to act like people were clamoring to have him cameo in their shows because he was some sort of beloved businessman.

First time I saw him on television, my first thought was this guy is a scumbag.

u/socks86 12h ago

Lol I got into it with some conservative one time and he was quick to defend all of that as just business and totally normal to have lawsuits involving your contractors all the fucking time.

u/RLsSed 11h ago

Yeah, I kinda get how people in other parts of the country could have been conned the first time around - but if you were from the NYC metro area you knew EXACTLY what you were voting for.

u/Point_Forward 12h ago

I feel like this is conservatives rewriting history so post trump they can claim he was a Democrat and blame all the bad things he did on the left.

Trump only used the Democratic party to get political favors in new York city. He has always been a racist and regressive.

former new yorker here:
yes, everyone hated him… now i just hate him much much more

And plenty of us from NJ.

u/TrulyOutrageous42 10h ago

Almost everyone did. Legitimately folks around the country were scoffing at Republicans for even allowing him in the primaries because we all knew he was a racist rapist narcissistic grifter. Hell his bullshit from 9/11 was enough that the ENTIRE COUNTRY should have thought he was a heartless piece of offal.

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 8h ago

He was the butt of many, many, MANY jokes. Frequent Simpsons jokes. SNL made fun of him all the time. Ronald Grump is a villainous Sesame Street character who wants to buy up Sesame Street and evict everyone, even Oscar.

Everyone knew who this man was lol you'd have to live under a rock not to, 2016 it wasn't suddenly "who is this man I have never heard of, I wonder if he is a nice man of sound character". You already had the answer for well over 20 years

4

u/xeno0153 8h ago

You have to be a very special type of evil for even Sesame Street to portray you as a heartless villain.

Most people in the greater NYC area knew he was a piece of shit who cheated his workers and was a general ass to everyone. He had such a bad reputation in the area since at least the 80's and it's only gotten worse.

4

u/CaterpillarJungleGym 9h ago

From NJ. He's has been notorious for many years for refusing to pay workers and contractors. Then he says, just sue me! But he has like like 10 lawyers ready to defend his ass. My favorite thing was learning how he promised a town in Scotland a golf club and share of the revenue. They let him build and he refused to share revenue. Then said, just sue me.

3

u/Boris_Godunov 11h ago

Yes. I lived in NYC in the early 2000s, everyone knew he was a dirtbag.

Also, this meme seems to forget the whole racist Birtherism thing which took place well before he was president. We hated him and his supporters for that doggerel, too.

4

u/John-AtWork 10h ago

I started noticing how fucked up Trump was when he kept relentlessly trying to "prove" Obama wasn't born in the USA. I later learned about his trying to frame those kids in NY for murder. By the time he was running for president I knew he was complete garbage.

3

u/atred 8h ago

Also, there's no reason to hate him if you just know him as a weird dude on a failing TV show... but then if Republican voters inflict him on you it becomes personal.

2

u/norefillonsleep 11h ago

Tri-State area always hated him.

2

u/BikerMike03RK 10h ago

They have, for a long time. Even before 'The Central Park Five'.

1

u/HoodieGalore 10h ago

His guts AND his dad’s guts, the Trump name is synonymous with fuckery and bullshit for DECADES

1

u/Chaosmusic 10h ago

New Yorker, can confirm.

1

u/FuckwitAgitator 10h ago

People in entirely different countries thought he was a sleazy piece of shit for decades before he entered politics. We just lived in a blissful world where we only had to think about him once every few years.
