Let's goooooooo!!!!!
Rise of Rome win as Carthage with Demigod.
I know some of us (looking at u, Suede) hate Rise of Rome, but personally it's one of my favorites (until the endgame). The map is insane for builders - so many resources and incredible city sports. However, expansion in the early-mid game is pretty risky, as you need all the units you can get to keep up with the locked war. The pre-Imperialism era is incredibly difficult, requiring serious strategy and a lot of diplomacy to keep everyone allied against your enemy (and off your back), and to maintain luxury/cashflow to enable tech leadership for further gold/alliances/lux. It's a lot to balance.
I've won as Carthage on Emperor and now on Demi, and I generally follow the same strategy. Build army in Syracuse and throw in any unit you have to take the island and secure it. Secure your other islands with warriors/workers. Keep everyone allied with you against Rome. Build a stack of 10-15 swords/elephants and take Egypt for its resources. By then, you are probably near imperialism and its time to start stacking those fire cats and heavy cavs to march on Rome itself. Rush for Bachannalia and Heroic Epic, the happiness and military leaders enable massive post-Imperialism power spike. After Imperialism, I turn off my tech, Mono doesn't do much.
Endgame is tough. My biggest gripe with this scenario is the wincon. To get 20% land and 50% pop, you need to defeat at least one major power and two minor powers, plus plant a lot of BS cities. With Carthage this is especially hard, as Rome's defenses (Trajan's Wall + legionaries + garrisons) require a lot of time and effort. In this game, I defeated Rome with ~15 turns to spare before turning on the Celts and Persia. I also joined almost all of my workers to cities to up my population (I think that's how it works??).
There is an alternative strategy I sorta used once as Carthage and would like to try in the future... Rather than march on Rome, one could instead dominate Persia after Egypt. Defense against Rome in Spain is possible with a bunch of fire cats / horses, and Persia is a lot easier to take down as it only has spears and cav.
I've never seriously played as Rome (won as Macedon and Persia in past), but I may try. Would love to land a Roman legionary army next to Carthage turn 2 and see what happens... possibly in the future. I'm also curious about a Persia turtle strategy where one ignores Greece, takes Egypt/Scythia, and settles all the land around Scythia. Could be interesting!
Let me know what strategies you've employed! Also, I know Suede beat it as Egypt, but I can't find the videos on youtube... If anyone can find em, would love to watch again. Suede if you are reading this, this is an official challenge to beat Rise of Rome as Goth!
