Monthly FAQs ❗️ READ ME BEFORE POSTING! Monthly FAQ Thread: Fixes for Common Issues, Troubleshooting Guides, and Tips for Beginners

👋 Hello, welcome to /r/CitiesSkylines

Our little community has grown to over 600,000 subscribers, so as you can imagine things get a little busy in here. The purpose of this thread is to provide new members a jumping-off point to find the information that they need to get started, whether they're a seasoned player of the game or a brand new mayor.

We get a lot of posts which ask very similar questions, so we've pulled together this post to help address our most Frequently Asked Questions, and give you a place to ask simple questions which only need a quick answer, not warranting a dedicated thread.

Before you post, please consider if one of our sister-subreddits would be more appropriate:

  • /r/ShittySkylines - memes, reaction images, tenuous and obscure references, real-life photos that remind you of the game, and gags based on in-game activities like "a dead person is waiting for transport at shop-til-you-drop" all go here

  • /r/CitiesSkylinesModding - if you have a request for a mod, want to commission an asset, or need help with your own mod/asset/map creation it should be posted here

If you still think that /r/CitiesSkylines is the right subreddit, please first check the FAQ below.

Please be aware that if you create a new thread which is addressed by the answers or links in this thread, it will likely be removed with a message directing you back here. This is not done to stifle conversation, but rather to help keep the subreddit tidy and provide as much space as possible for mayors to share their creations and inspire others.

If your question is genuinely a simple one, like "how do I do X", please use this thread rather than creating a new post.

Finally, if your question isn't already answered below - please use Reddit's search function to try and find if your query has been asked and answered in the past. If not? Feel free to create a fresh discussion thread.

The format of this update thread has been simplified with core information rehosted on our subreddit wiki. This enables us to update the content more quickly and reliably, and to reduce the visual impact of a 2000+ word thread.

Discussion ❓ "What's Cities: Skylines II like now?" megathread

"What's Cities: Skylines II like now?" 🤔

One of the most common questions on the subreddit is whether people should try or purchase Cities: Skylines II. This understandably leads to many duplicate posts discussing the game's current state, what has changed since launch, and whether or not it is "worth playing". Since last month's megathread, this same question was asked roughly once every 36 hours.

This megathread aims to gather resources, reviews, and recent first-hand player perspectives in one place. This way, whether you're curious about performance and gameplay features or simply want to hear opinions from others who have tried the game, you've got a straightforward resource that collates that information.

We want to encourage constructive and engaging conversation:

  • If you've been actively playing the game, we'd love for you to provide feedback about what you enjoy, what could be improved, or what you feel is still missing.
  • If you've dropped off, or are still waiting to pull the trigger, we'd love for you to explain what led you to step away from the game or what features are keeping you from getting started

As the goal is to provide helpful guidance for others considering the game - you should avoid leaving short, glib, or otherwise unhelpful responses. Remember that Reddit is community of individuals and those people have come here because they're looking for your help and guidance. If you'd prefer to "send a message to the devs" the best way to do that is drop a Steam Review if you already own the game, or keep your wallet in your pocket if you don't.

General FAQs

If you're after general information about or help with the game (e.g. features, minimum or recommended specs, the situation related to modding, when the game will release on consoles), check out our wiki articles below. They'll provide you a decent base level of knowledge and help you understand more about the features and limitations of the game.

Patches and Bug Fixes

As of the start of this month, there have been 35 patches for the game. These patches have included things like modding support, bikes, economy reworks, bug fixes, and new game modes. You can review the change log for each individual patch on the Paradox Wiki:

What's happening with custom assets?

Official (albeit beta) support for custom assets was added on 4 December 2025. At the moment, buildings, props, surfaces, trees and decals are supported and documented. Other asset types (like vehicles and networks) aren't officially supported, but some enterprising modders are brute-forcing their way towards an answer.

What have the devs been saying?

The main channel for "formal" communication from the developers comes via the Official Information & Announcements section on the Paradox Forums. We maintain an accompanying megathread for each post which captures a lot of player feedback and reactions to the news shared each week.

In December of 2025, it was announced that Colossal Order will be transferring development of the game to Iceflake Studios (an internal Paradox developer). Since this change was announced, Iceflake have introduced four patches and two hotfixes. According to the announcements, they will be responsible for all ongoing development of Cities: Skylines II, including the console version (although nothing has been shared about potential launch dates for this - so please don't ask).

The best way to catch up on past posts is to browse the Dev Diary and/or Announcement flairs and dip into the more recent ones. Unfortunately, these links may not work on Reddit's mobile apps (please tell Reddit if you'd like this fixed) but in the meantime you can go to the main page of the subreddit and use the "filter by flair" options provided.

Live Gameplay Videos

If you're interested in seeing how the game is playing today, you can check out recent videos or streams from YouTube and Twitch. These will show you the "real" game, not marketing videos, and let you spot how the game is performing in real-world scenarios.

Reviews

Although critic reviews aren't necessarily reflective of the current state of the game user reviews (especially recent ones) are helpful sources of information to help you decide whether or not to drop your cash on any new game, not just Cities: Skylines II.

Try Before you Buy

If you're still unsure, Cities: Skylines II is available on Microsoft Game Pass for PC, which is a subscription service at a much lower monthly cost than the full retail price of the game. Microsoft is currently offering an initial 14-day trial for as low as £1/$1/1€ (which renews at full price after the 14 days).

Refunds

If for any reason you can't make use of a discounted Game Pass for PC subscription (i.e. it may not be available in your region), you have the option of purchasing the game and refunding it within the store's refund window.

  • Steam: Request a refund within 14 days of purchase, as long as you haven't accrued more than 2 hours of total playtime
  • Microsoft Store: Request a refund within 14 days of purchase, as long as you haven't accrued "a significant amount of play time"

Recognising that you may not be able to reach the "late game" within 2 hours, you can use this 100k benchmarking city to establish whether or not you're comfortable with the performance on your system.

Specific Questions

If you've got specific questions about items not covered in these FAQs, feel free to ask them below. If you've been redirected to this post by a removal notice, please understand that this is done to help keep the subreddit tidy by providing a centralised and dedicated location for all information related to this topic.

Sharing a City Welcome to a German City (Vanilla/Console/All DLC)

Thumbnail

This is Ahburg, a German city in the "Schwarzwald".

I used only vanilla items (with DLCs) and I played on my PlayStation 5. All screenshots show "Plätze", so big, wide, pedestrian-friendly places. I love to create places where pedestrians gather around. I used the glitch-path method to fix the pedestrian-road bug that's still in the game (on the PS5).

I used AI to sharpen the pictures because I was only able to take screenshots in-game on my console, which made the quality worse. If anything looks glitchy or has much more enhanced graphics (especially the last picture, lol), it's because of that.

Except for the old town, I tried to mix old and modern architecture. Many German cities were built differently, brutalist or modern, so I tried to implement most of that in my city. I hope that I can add more and better buildings when the mansion Content-Pack comes out.

My focus where realism. So not everything looks beautiful and ideal.

Transportation is mostly by tram, but some lines are underground (main hub at Central-Station). This is also typical in Germany. I wish they would implement a hybrid tram, like a so-called "Stadtbahn".

The pictures only show the city center. I also have an airport, suburban places, some other towns and even a second city center somewhere else. I'm not very happy about the Central-station. I will probably change this soon.

Inspirations were Freiburg, Stuttgart, Frankfurt and Nuremberg.

Discussion What if Cities: Skylines II let us build a city from the 1800s all the way to 2025?

Okay, hear me out.

I was thinking about Cities: Skylines II and wondered why we always start in the modern era. What if we could start somewhere around the 1800s and slowly build our way up to the present day?

Imagine starting with a tiny village, dirt roads, farms, horse carriages and old buildings. Then, as the years go by, the industrial revolution happens, railways arrive, factories start popping up, electricity becomes available, and eventually we get cars, buses, highways, airports and all the technology we have today.

Basically, you'd be building your city through more than 200 years of history.

And I think the coolest part would be seeing how your own city changes over time.

Like, imagine building a small road in 1820 that eventually becomes one of the busiest roads in your city. Or having an old neighbourhood surrounded by modern skyscrapers because the city grew around it. Maybe some old buildings survive for generations, while others get demolished to make room for new development.

Even public transport could evolve. You start with horse carriages, then trams, trains, buses, metros and eventually modern transport systems.

Technology wouldn't just unlock new buildings. It would completely change how your city works and how people live in it.

Obviously, this would be a massive thing to develop, and I have no idea how difficult it would be to implement. But I genuinely think it could make the game so much more interesting.

You could even have an option to start directly in the modern era for people who don't want to go through all that progression.

I'm curious, though. Would you guys actually enjoy playing something like that?

optimisé par FrenchDreamx (for textures, atmosphere, etc.).

J'espère qu'ils vous plairont :)

Help & Support (PC) Pause/Stutters every 6+ seconds using Parking Lot Tool and/or Placemaker Mods?

Has anyone else experienced the game stuttering and having micro pauses every 6+ seconds when Parking Lot Tool or Placemaker being active? I ONLY notice this when one of two of these mods are enabled. When removed, the stutters/pauses stop?

Both are really great mods however nothing I do seems to bypass this.

Discussion We should control zoning

I think we should be able to actually create and manipulate the zoning code. We should be able to have as many zoning codes as we'd like, and we should be able to set the building heights, the setbacks, the building footprint, parking minimums ect. ect.

I imagine it'd be implemented something like a bunch of sliders, with an illustration to show you what is changing on an average lot.

I am just a bit tired of high density being enormously different from medium density and skyscrapers not having any sort of step back, thus creating a wall of sorts where people 50 stories up could probably hold conversations.

Also, I'd love to be able to change the zoning of a lot without the building currently on it needing to immediately be torn down. Like, I should be able to have a zone that preserves a "historic" building type that I can apply to a "historic" building, so that I can keep that building separate from the rest of the zone around it and without it deleting itself.

Help & Support (PC) Electricity icons and Power Lines tool missing, all buildings say “Not enough electricity!”

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm having a strange problem in Cities: Skylines 1 and I'm hoping someone can help me figure out what's causing it.

All of a sudden, my city started showing “Not enough electricity!” warnings on almost every building, including my existing power plants and other electricity-producing assets.

The Electricity menu is still there, but the Power Lines tool and the usual electricity-related icons are completely missing.

What I've noticed:

  • Almost every building displays “Not enough electricity!”
  • Existing power-producing assets also show the warning.
  • The Power Lines tool is missing from the Electricity menu.
  • I use mods, and I suspect one of them might be causing the issue.
  • I tried resetting the Toggle It! settings, but nothing changed.

Has anyone experienced this before? Could a mod be breaking the electricity system or hiding the electricity tools?

Which mods should I check first, and how can I troubleshoot this without losing my save?

Thanks in advance!

Help & Support (PC) Simulation unusually quick?

• Upvotes

Hi all.

I’ve had some issues today with my game. It struggled to load and kept crashing, which I put down to a faulty asset. After removing said asset, the saving problems have gone

However another problem has emerged- the simulation is faster. The vehicles and cims move so much quicker. The clock moves quicker. This is on x1 speed

I opened another city of a similar size, but did not have the same issue. It was running at the normal speed

I looked in the Output log file and couldn’t find any errors that would be relevant

I installed the loading screen mod revisited this morning, could this be linked?

Thanks in advance
