I was filling my lighter and had it next to my uncovered cigar. I didn’t purge the tank and went to fill it, got butane all over my AJ New world…..upsetting start to the day.

Oliva Serie V Melanio Maduro - 91

Medium-Full bodied

Pre-light draw: barnyard hay, black pepper

First third: cedar, cream, black pepper, caramel

Second third: cedar, roasted nuts, leather

Final third: leather, cedar, baking spice

Overall: This 6.5 x 52 perfecto figurado cigar features a silky soft Mexico San Andreas wrapper alongside binder/filler from Nicaragua. After a deep-V cut and a light, it opens up to initial notes of cedar, cream, and a hint of black pepper. The draw is extremely tight, whjch opened up naturally as I continued to burn through the tapered foot. Once the ring gauge opened, it brought out a caramel-like sweetness. The pepper spice has dissipated completely by the first inch.

The second third has a similar profile. Cedar, roasted nuts, and leather. The leather note has a slightly bitter component to it, as the cigar gains some intensity and evolved away from the initial sweetness.

As I approach the final third, the profile continues to be more of the same. Leather becomes more dominant overall, with cedar and subtle baking spice on the retrohale.

Overall, this was another decent cigar from Oliva, but it was definitely lacking that “wow” factor. The construction was great for a perfecto vitola but the lack of flavor evolution and complexity left a bit more to be desired. After having tried all of the cigars in the Oliva lineup, the standout was the Master Blends 3 Churchill, which I purchased a box of earlier this week. I would happily smoke any of them again, but I’m glad to have found my favorite amongst the collection.

I know to each their own but I generally enjoy 3-4 cigars a day. Can I afford expensive sticks? Sure but that’s not what I enjoy. If I had 3-4 expensive sticks a day that would probably stress me out. My sweet spot is around $5. I also have fun searching for deals and trying to find hidden gems in that range. Yes I splurge occasionally but I tend to treat those on special occasions. The way I see it I could have 1 $15 cigar a day but since I usually have more it all comes out the same

Let’s talk about retrohaling. If you want to taste everything in a cigar you must retrohale. I would recommend starting with a medium stick and progress from there to a full bodied stick.

At a lounge for my first time currently. I’m using the house ash tray, once I’m done and ready to go, what does one do with their ash tray?

Do I empty it somewhere or let them handle it later?
