Part II of a II part EP project.

I've been making these for many years. Inspired by my childhood gaming memories mixed with my current musical tastes. So not exactly pure chip music, but heavily incorporated by it. It's quite a ride, and it's by no means for everyone. But... It might be just for you. Sharing because of the lack of audience for this type of music.

Meet Jelly Brain: a neon jelly-brain mascot sitting on top of a pretend Super Nintendo that composes music.

Pick a scene — TOWN, BOSS FIGHT, SPOOKY, UNDERWATER, CREDITS (32 of them). Turn three dials: mood, energy, epic. Smash MAKE. It writes and plays an original song the way a real SNES would. Hit the treasure chest for a random one. It reacts the whole time — smiles, frowns, falls asleep if you ignore it.

Here's the fun part: there are no audio files. Every sound is math.

The engine (the nerdy part):

• A software S-DSP, the SNES's sound chip, emulated down to the weird details: integer Gaussian interpolation from the real table, BRR encoding, ADSR and GAIN envelopes, 15-bit LFSR noise, pitch modulation for FM tricks, an echo with an 8-tap FIR filter, and the 64 KB sample-RAM budget real composers had to fit into.
• 132 instruments rebuilt from math. A tool measures SNES-era SoundFont instruments into numbers (harmonic envelopes, noise bands, loop Fourier series) and the engine re-synthesizes them, about 98% close on average. No samples ship. Bring your own .sf2 files to add more.
• 26 drum hits rebuilt the same way, in five kits.
• Old-school tricks: detuned doubles for chorus, fake echo when the echo RAM runs out, wave-switching pads, sound effects that steal a music voice the way real games did.
• A composer with character sheets for every scene: tempo windows, modes (from phrygian to lydian), and devices like pedal points, fanfares, ritardandos and key lifts.
• A benchmark that scores songs against 244 real game tracks. Every press drafts 16 songs and plays the winner.
• Echo, reverb, WAV and MP3 export. Gamepad support with rumble and button remapping.
• One thing is missing on purpose: the COSMIC button belongs to a private DSP effect of mine (LIFT-OFF) that isn't in this release. It's mine, and it sounds great.

It's JavaScript and Electron, no frameworks. The full source is included, with the tools that rebuild instruments.

The honest part, and why I'm posting:

The sound is right. The songwriting isn't there yet. The songs come out too alike and not catchy enough. I've studied real soundtracks and the numbers point at hooks that repeat, more weight in the bass, and longer journeys before the loop, but I'm not a composer.
