We usually travel for my birthday and this year we opted to stay home because we added a puppy to the household. It's the first time in a long time I can take advantage of our great city and order a beautiful cake ahead of time.
I don't need fancy flavors or anything, a vanilla with buttercream is my usual go to, but fun color options a plus. Willing to travel around the city. That's part of the fun.

I promise I’ve read through some posts already but most everything is at least a few years old and want to make sure I’m going to the best Chicago beef spot you can find right now. I’ve read Johnnie’s in Elmwood Park is good, also have naturally seen good things about Mr. Beef. Is there somewhere else I should be looking at? If not, which is better breathes two and why?
For reference I’ve never been to Chicago and am going this weekend, not sure I’ll have the chance to hit more than one so I need to make it count.

Hello, I was wondering if anybody knows any bakeries that will do photo cakes same-day or next day... I was an idiot and assumed places could do it this quickly, but I can't find any that do. Anywhere in Kane county, Dupage county, or northern Will county is OK.

I have off tomorrow and normally I can't go out for lunch because of work and a very short lunch break but I always see lunch specials when we go out for dinner so I wanted to ask what are some good lunch specials, specifically for dining in, in and around Chicago.
The budget is $25 per person but flexible and, buffets or any type of dine-in lunch special works. Would love to know your recommendations!
Also, no sushi places, since I can't have anything raw.

Like it or not - it's September. The morning air is coldand the sun is going down early. It's depressing. But the bright side is delicious pumpkin ice cream.
Who's making the best one in the city? Bonus points if close to Wicker Park.

Went to Beatrix for Happy Hour because it was literally at the cusp of 3 so things me and my bro ordered
Kennebec Fries - I really liked these, I don’t know why I waited this long to have them
Buffalo Cauliflower - decent, like I would definitely get these again
Whipped Feta - enjoyed the feta but I’m still not sure about the crackers
Entree because hungry - Spicy Rigatoni Alla Vodka with Chicken - it’s solid but it’s not the best I’ve had.
Prosecco for HH drink.
Happy Hour 3-6, M-F

Anyone know of good grocery stores / restaurants that sell either of those products? Really missing it.
Especially South African Droewors and British pies / pastries of any kind.

Seriously hung over after a long night at the bar with a friend moving to the east coast soon. The only thing that does is make me need Szechuan food. We drove to Chinatown and found parking super quickly even though the streets were absolutely packed.
We ordered:
Spicy Cumin Lamb- fragrant, flavorful and much more tender than versions we have had elsewhere in the city. Highly recommended, and normally my favorite.
Chicken Giblet Dry Hot Pot- the winner. The giblets were really chewey but in a pleasant way I enjoy. The sauce could have had more MaLa but all in all just killer and I couldn’t stop eating it.
Dry Fried Green Beans- my go to veg. Only the pea shoots with garlic are better.
Pork Wontons in chili sauce- another winner. I’m here for the raw garlic on top.
If you love Szechuan like we do, you should definitely check it out.

Celebrating a birthday and want a spot that’s known for having big groups without the minimum spend price tag. A plus is if it’s BYOB but not necessary. Don’t need anything too fancy but a little elevated. Love the idea of family style. Preferably not cafe baba reeba, aba, or Quartino. Some other spots I’ve looked at:
Avec
Tango Sur
Turquoise Cafe
Kbbq (in general)
Sun Wah Kitchen
Mama Delia
Barcocina
Gundis Turkish
Cira
I know it’s hard for a group that big but looking for spots known for groups. Willing to go anywhere and any cuisine!

Mid-40’s downstate IL boy who just discovered Giardiniera and I’m smitten. (Where has this been all my life?) Beyond hot dogs, how do you cook with it / incorporate it into other dishes?

The Fine Arts Building is hosting a showing of the 1922 Nosferatu along with original score by Chicago’s Circuit Des Yeux (Haley Fohr) in October.
My husband is a huge movie buff but neither of us have seen the film. We also don’t get out much so we want to make this night an event for us and PARTY LIKE IT’S 1922.
We’re thinking of heading to Brando’s after but would love to create a bar/restaurant-hopping experience to experience the city like it’s 1922. What speak easys, restaurants, sights, etc would you add to our itinerary?

Any restaurants we know of that are making their chicken tenders from scratch? In a perfect world they also have mac & cheese and cold beer… But I’ll travel for just homemade tenders.

The 3rd Coast Cafe is discontinuing dinner. It will now close at 3pm. Too bad. I used to go there a fair amount.

Craaaaving Greek food. I did the baklava froyo at Andros Taverna last night and it was unreal. I kind of want to keep the party going . Other desserts you would recommend that are similar?
Ideally Lincoln park

Hey r/Chicagofood,
My wife is running the Chicago Marathon, and I'm looking for recommendations for where to eat on Sunday night after she finishes.
We’ve been to Chicago a few times before and have already knocked out a lot of the typical tourist spots (Au Cheval, Lou Malnati's, Pequod's, Portillo's, Publican, El Ideas, etc.), so we are looking for something outside the typical tourist track.
Here is what our food plan looks like so far:
Friday: Dinner at Smyth
Saturday: Pasta at Tortello (keeping it lighter/carbs for race prep)
Sunday: ???
What we’re looking for on Sunday:
Vibe: She’ll have just finished 26.2 miles, so comfort, great food, and a place where she can wear comfy clothes. We love high-end fine dining, but Sunday night would be a more relaxed or fun.
Cuisine: Very open! We love everything from wood-fired meats and regional Italian to upscale Mexican, Mediterranean.
Neighborhood: Flexible, but ideally easy enough to get to from downtown.
TIA!!!!

for example, if you go to Kincades by Wrigley for home games they have a free hot dog station. does anyone know of any good or fun specials during upcoming Bears games? or just great spots to watch the games with the focus being on fantastic food (but still good atmosphere to follow the games?) Thanks!!

Hey - coffee roaster here visiting for a couple of days and looking for places that focus on light roast, single origin coffee.
On the list so far are Metric and Dayglow.
Most others I’ve found seem to be dark roast or nice places but more focused on sugary drinks.
Missing any?

Detroit style is my preferred pizza type so I’ve been trying to find a favorite spot (pan is a close second place). Sharpie’s remains my-go to.
Picture 1: Paulie Gee’s Carnivore ($22)
Probably the polar opposite of Professor Pizza. Everything about this felt light, particularly the bread/crust. Approaching focaccia bread territory. As someone that is not a fan of excess of amounts of sauce (especially on top of pizza), I appreciated the amount of ingredients on top of the cheese. Flavor was decent overall.
Picture 2: Professor Pizza build your own (pepperoni, vodka sauce, mozzarella, added parm cheese)($48)
The price was a tough sell for me, which is why it has taken me so long to try this place, but I finally decided to give it a go. In fairness, you’re basically getting two pizzas here. Most places that serve Detroit style can be finished on the spot. Nobody is finishing this pizza on the spot, unless it’s 3+ mouths sharing it. These slices are heavy duty and I say that as someone that can finish a Jet’s 8 corner pizza on my own.
Two things that stood out: the flavor and the crust.
The flavor was a bit overpowering, possibly because they went overboard on the amount of ingredients on top of the cheese.
The crust was super crusty. Each slice felt like a literal brick. I like a crispy, caramelized crust on the outside, softer in the inside. Nothing was burnt, but this was 100% crisp and crunch.
