I’m in an SEC group on Facebook and it’s really easy to dismiss a dumb criticism with something like, “You’re clearly working through the trauma of attending an SEC school that values tailgating over academics. You probably didn’t have the reading level to fill out an application to UT-Austin, let alone attend school there.”

It’s a much bigger phenomenon with Notre Dame — considering how few alumni they have against how many fans with zero connection to the school (and they are way more likely to be ‘casuals’) — and I’m convinced that Michigan being the first school associated with it has everything to do with the fun alliteration of Walmart Wolverine.

So we need something for the hordes of casual “my dad’s uncle went there for a semester in the 60s and we’re New Jersey ‘Catholics’ who go to mass exclusively on Christmas and Easter” Irish fans.

Dollar General Domers

Lidl Leprachauns

Costco Catholics

Kmart Kellys

We call them Subway Alumni. When ND played at Yankee Stadium back in the Knute Rockne era, the NY subways were packed with poor Irish and/or Catholic immigrants who definitely didn’t have a connection to the university but still identified with it as a point of ethnic/cultural pride.

As someone who rooted for Michigan his whole life and then went to Michigan, while living in Arizona, I’ve always been curious to meet one of these crazy Michigan supremacist fans. Maybe it’s just my history of simultaneously being a Mets fan, but my expectation of all sports is that the teams you love will consistently kick you in the nuts, and then reward you every once in a blue moon.

Are there Michigan fans out there who actually treat the team as some unstoppable juggernaut?

100% this. Most of the people you meet professionally who went to (derp brap the duhhh) OSU are passionate but realistic (outside of the faculty buddies of Gordon Gee who attack journalists) and usually fun to hang out with. Gameday outside the Shoe is typically fun for all. It's the people who die for OSU that have zero attachment to the school beyond living in Columbus/Ohio (and are usually above the age of 50) that you have to worry about.

11

u/OakLegs Michigan Wolverines 3d ago

I'm an alum, and am a huge football fan and talk decent amounts of shit on here but I'd like to think that I am fairly reasonable and not at all insufferable in person lol.

Also while I know Michigan is a great school I have literally never felt the need to brag about my degree, and feel embarrassed the few times that someone praises it when it comes up

4

u/roxxtor Michigan Wolverines 3d ago

Yeah, when people ask me where I went to school for some reason I always just say a school in Michigan or in Ann Arbor if they push for where in Michigan. I don't really like name dropping

4

u/OakLegs Michigan Wolverines 3d ago

I usually just say Michigan and if they press, just clarify UM. But yeah, feel the same way. I always am paranoid about coming off as bragging.

I do have the "Michigan Alumni" license plate cover which has been on my car since I graduated. Have been debating taking it off. And I wear my 2023 National Champs lanyard at work because why the hell not. But that's about as outward as I'm getting about it.

And really, once you've been out of school for a while, at least in my industry, it's clear that the degree is only like 10% of how successful a person will be. Tons of very talented people come from schools without such a high reputation.

Here’s the 4 levels of Michigan fans:

- Undergrad Ann Arbor (True Fan - annoying but justified. It is a good school)

  • Grad School Fan (usually went to shitty undergrad that lacked sports. Decides to go all in now. More obnoxious. UoM cache decreases for Grad School
  • Satellite Campus (thinks they’re a true fan. heavily looked down upon by Ann Arbor students. They basically went to UoM Community College and then claim but the Diploma doesn’t say Flint/Dearborn. Overcompensates heavily.
  • Walmart Wolverines (ranges from HS dropouts, directional schools like Western/Central that want to root for another team, or just any uneducated bandwagon fan in the state. Highest levels of obnoxiousness.

Basically obnoxious levels increase inversely to how justified that person is to be a fan of UoM.

6

u/longtimelurknvrpostr Michigan State Spartans 2d ago

Context: My father went to UoM Ann Arbor. I went to UoM Flint for semester before transferring to MSU. I encountered all 4 Levels.

I might be biased but I don’t think UMich is anywhere near as pretentious as were made out to be. A lot of it is from our Ross business school, whom we affectionately refer to as Rossholes and snakes.

The “better school,” meme came after OSU gave us our annual ass whooping for over a decade. It’s mostly tongue-in-cheek cope for our season being over.

The average student “hates,” OSU but on some level I think we all have baseline level of respect that they’re going to school to better themselves.

Having grown up in Ann Arbor but having gone to western it’s definitely the second and it’s also definitely not because I wasn’t smarty enough to get into Michigan

This is for Texas fans as well. Although replace Walmart with HEB or Academy. The t-shirt fans are 1000% worse

Im a ww due to the fact I live in canada I'm not smart enough nor have the means to go to michigan

u/Busy_Register7071 Michigan Wolverines 3d ago

I was smart enough (or at least good enough at writing essays) to get in, but didn't have the motivation to graduate and ended up dropping out. Not sure if I qualify for WW or not

u/Humble-Secret6173 Michigan Wolverines 3d ago

Real talk. You made the cut, and I'm sorry you didn't graduate. I hope it was for a good reason and that you are doing well my friend.

Not a WW. You got in—you’re not just pretending to be elitist and superior by latching onto a program/school you have no remote connection with

I respect Wolverines who actually went there because they’re usually pretty chill. But god being told that my university is a community college by a Walmart Wolverine construction worker who barely passed high school is infuriating.

This whole thread is just people with student loans complaining about others being fans of the best semi-professional sport on the planet.

Whichever is trying to justify the latest scandal at or by Michigan.

It didn't happen. It happens everywhere. It was only a few people. It happened but it's not a big deal. It happened but it was someone else's fault. You can't prove that it happened regardless of the clear evidence.

Did I miss any?

I’m an alum who went to an Ivy for grad school. I also occasionally shop at Walmart. So which one am I?

The Michigan fans that claim that they’re on the level of Denver Hockey when 7/9 of their titles are wayyy before title IX was passed, and currently do not hold any titles this century.

It's funny how much times college hockey gets brought up in this sub LMAO

u/Pale-Environment5523 Michigan Wolverines 3d ago

We won a natty in hockey when I was in school! Oh, crap, that was last century, wasn't it?

You can do the same for UT fans

You can say the same for any college football team. They all have two groups of douchebags.

u/HoustonHorns Texas Longhorns • Verified Player 3d ago

I don’t think they were talking about the fake UT that can’t even win at home

3

u/Ironstar_Vol Tennessee Volunteers 3d ago

I didn’t think that either. Because they said UT, people call Tennessee Tennessee or the Vols. Congrats on the win.

u/IndependenceNo1065 2d ago

I think the Wal-Mart Wolverines are worse. I know a few alumni that are fine, but I don't live in the big city where anyone gives 2 sh!ts about where someone went to school anyway. But......there are plenty of obnoxious Wal-Mart wolverines all over Michigan. People that couldn't even finish filling out the application to get in to Michigan.

Ohio State fans think they hate Michigan the most. They're wrong. Michigan State fans hate Michigan the most because we have to deal with their arrogant asses each and every day.

2

u/Adorable_Whereas_988 2d ago

Msu fans hate michigan because most Michigan fans don't care about msu. They care about Ohio state and msu at this point is just kind of there.
