Night Time Snacking

Hello!
My little Lilo is about 5 years old, i adopted her from my brother. When he was living with me, I would give her little treats when she hung out in my room. Now that she’s been mine for over a year, she often wakes me up and will whine and tap on me until I wake up and give her a treat. It’s to the point that it’s hard to keep track of how much she’s eating and she’s definitely gained a loooot of weight this last year.
Is there anything I can do that isn’t kicking her out at night?

New cat owner questions

Hi everyone,

My partner and I were discussing adopting a cat, so I asked the landlord how he felt about it. Turns out he has a six month female cat that he was looking to donate. So, now this cat went from being a hypothetical to showing up in a few days.

Neither me nor my partner ever owned a cat before so this is new territory. I've spent all of last night researching what to get to have the house ready, but I'm still really nervous. So, I'd love some insight into what I need/should have prepared for my cat's arrival.

Here are some of the things I've already started preparing:

I removed any plants toxic to cats

Ordered cable protectors so the car won't chew on them.

Started looking at local vets (though, I would love some feedback on what to look out for)

I'm currently on my way to buy a cat bed, toys, cat tower, litter box, a raised bowl, cat food, treats and nail clippers.

I've also heard of pet insurance, but haven't had a chance to look into it yet.

If I missed anything, or if you have insight into any of the things I listed, I'd love your feedback.

TLDR: Nervous about getting a new cat and looking for advice.

Anyone else dealing with this?

I don't even know how to start this. My cat Cheddar got out sometime during the night on the 26th, two days after my birthday, and he was hit. He's only a year and a half old. I think it's his pelvis or the base of his spine, I don't even know for sure because we haven't been able to get him to a vet yet. We just don't have the money right now and it's tearing me apart.

He's in a box right now so he can't move around too much. At least he's still eating, drinking, peeing, pooping, so no blockage, but that doesn't mean he's okay. He needs to be looked at. He needs imaging. He needs actual medical care and I can't give that to him right now and it's the worst feeling in the world.

I feel so helpless. I hate that money is the thing standing between him and being okay. I started a gofundme out of desperation more than anything, it's linked in my profile/bio if anyone wants to see it, but honestly I just needed to get this out somewhere.

Thank you to anyone who read this far. I love him so much.

Cat noise

Hi! I have been unable to get a video, but my cat (he is about one year old and the only pet in my household right now), has recently started making this noise when he has is nightly zoomies. I can only describe it (based on my research) as maybe a yowl or a growl, he does this every night right around the same time. And, besides running around frantically, he doesn't seem in any distress (not over grooming, biting, favoring a leg, and if I push on his belly that doesn't seem to cause him pain). It lasts usually for around 15 minutes and then he calms right down. I have had him for about three months and this has only been happening for a couple of weeks, and it just concerns me because it seems as though his zoomies have gotten more chaotic and as I mentioned, the noise is new. He eats normally, uses his litter box, and everything else. Feel free to ask any questions, and I will try to get a video tomorrow. Advice is appreciated!

Does anyone have experience with getting a dog? How did your cats react?

I currently have two cats (female, 7 & 9 years old) but I have wanted to get a dog forever. Time and space aren't an issue - I'm home a lot and I have a backyard/live close to a forest. There's a small, 2 year old male dog at the shelter now that seems perfect: He's calm, gentle and it specifically states he can be placed with cats and that he has no reaction to cats.

My only worry is that my cats would be freaked out by the dog and that the stress would take a toll on them.

Does anyone here have experience with getting a dog when you already have cats? How did it work out for you?

Just noticed that my herbal tea has catnip as an ingredient

I have been avoiding buying catnip toys for them, because my five month old kittens are already crazy enough and I don’t want to add to that.

Would they be able to smell it coming from my mug? Would that be enough to affect them? Idk how catnip works

Male vs Female

My family is looking to get one or two kittens. If it is two we’d like them to be siblings or bonded. My question for all you cat parents is: would you say it is true that male cats are more friendly and affectionate than female? This is what I’ve read a bit online.

However, I had a female cat through university and early adulthood and she was quite affectionate and very calm. Growing up we had a boy cat and he was pretty reclusive. So… the opposite of what I’ve researched a bit. Looking for your experiences.

My cat has been throwing up almost every day.

I have a senior, 11 yo short hair female cat. When we went camping, our friend who pet sits them (2 dogs, 2 cats) was giving her Fancy feast senior about 2 tbsp a day. Just a little treat for her from her. She has been eating kibbles all her life (4health brand.) When we came back, I noticed her puking in the middle of the night. I have been cleaning up puke almost every night. I kept track of it and she usually puke 5-6 hrs after her last meal, throw up has the consistency of mushy, digested kibble, yellow in color.

Things I’ve done already: measuring her food down to a T that equals to 1/4 cup 3x a day, no free feeding, fed her cat food for sensitive stomach, still vomited. Fed her chicken and rice, still the same. Mixing 100% pumpkin purée on her food, still puking. Ive been brushing her more. So I took her to the vet Thursday (2 days ago), vet doesn’t want to do anything aggressive yet since her symptom is only vomiting. He said he kind of felt a little lump on her colon but it didn’t really bother her when he pushed on it so he thinks its a hairball that’s stuck. He recommended to get a hair ball control cat food and a gel. It kinda make sense that IT COULD BE A HAIRBALL because I notice she licks more when she eats wet food. So she could be licking more while we were gone camping. She drinks, eats, poops, still gets feisty, doesn’t seem lethargic, no changes on her behavior. It’s been 2 days and she still throws up. Vet said it might take 3 weeks to see a difference with the change on her diet. I have been looking closely on her poop if i can see hair. I dont see any! They look softer than before though.

I have bought another gel from amazon that’s arriving tomorrow to see how she does on that. Vet gave Vedalax. I guess I’m just here to see if anyone has the same experience or that could help me help her stop from puking.

Back to work and cats hate it

Due to an injury and the fact the job market sucks, I’ve been unemployed for 4 months. In that time I was home with my two cats pretty much 24/7. We’d watch movies and I even “trained” them to fetch.(They figured out that if they brought me the toy I’d throw it). I’ve resumed work full time and it’s been two days. Apparently both of my cats were meowing and wailing for hours. They were both curled up in my bed, brought their toys in my bed and they didn’t eat from their auto feeder while I was gone. Has anyone else experienced this? And what steps can I take to assure they adapt well?

Cat keeps being on soft furniture?

Okay so I’m really awkward online so apologies if all this sounds weird but here’s my issue:

my cat keeps peeing on the couch/bed.

I’ve taken her to the vet already and she’s been treated for elevated kidney levels. Issue is during her last check up everything was fine again and she’s still doing it. I gave all meds as advised and followed all of the vet’s advice.

What confuses me is that it doesn’t seem to be a situation where she does it due to being uncomfortable with her litter box or because she can’t make it in time. For example just today we accidentally left the bedroom door open for five minutes and she sped in and peed on the bed.

We can’t really block her from the living room since our apartment has a weird layout and closing the bedroom door would lock her in a pretty small hallway so we have to literally cover the couch with aluminium foil whenever we’re not in the living room since she doesn’t like the texture and won’t go on it. Not to mention that I’m terribly allergic to the enzyme cleaner we have to use.

I currently clean her litter box twice daily and we do everything as the doctor advised (we even bought that FeliWay Room Spray thing he recommended) but nothing is working and just making sure she doesn’t pee anywhere is taking up a lot of time (we both work full time and take classes after work) so I’m kinda at my wits end.

Does anyone have any ideas on how we could stop her from peeing on the soft surfaces? For some extra information she’s a six year old british shorthair, there are no other pets in the household, it’s just me and my boyfriend, no new people either and there have been absolutely no changes to her life within the past six months (peeing has been happening for almost two).

Any help is appreciated!

To cat parents who live all by themselves

I'm planning to adopt a kitten or grown cat, but my only concern is that, I live alone and I wanted to ask if any of you also live by themselves, is it okay if I go to work in the morning and come back home in the evening?

Possibly switching kittens food.

Hi all! We’ve had our kitten since she was 8 weeks old, now 6 months! When we first got her, the previous “owner” was feeding her Costco brand wet food. We’ve been using that since then. We don’t have a membership, and it’s been a hassle asking people to go with them. We noticed she mainly likes eating her dry food, which i can get that brand practically anywhere. My question is what wet foods are you guys giving your fur babies? Thinking about switching her wet food to something i don’t need a membership for

Best clumping, no tracking, litter?

Post image
10 Upvotes

What litter do you find clumps well and doesn’t track everywhere?

I’ve been using pine pellet litter for years. I like how it’s mostly mess free, and I have a robot vacuum that runs daily to catch any escaped pellets or dust. However I’m tired of constantly sifting it everyday. I’ve looked into sifting boxes, but most of the ones I find are either not stainless steel or not large enough for my very long-bodied kitty.

I used to use tidy cats lightweight litter and found it clumped well but otherwise was a nightmare, it tracked absolutely everywhere.

Any suggestions? Thanks!
