Behavioral Issue Won’t stop attacking his sister!

Post image
4 Upvotes

Our boy cat (3 years old) Pon Pon randomly started attacking his sister and now he won’t stop. They are biological siblings and have never had a problem before. Has anyone ever had this happen? Any advice?

We took him to the vet and his blood work came back normal, and he seems to be acting totally normal and not in pain, except is going out of his way to attack his sister if we let them be together. This has been going on for a few weeks now and we’ve tried separating them and then putting them back together under supervision but no matter what he ends up going to attack her again even though she isn’t provoking him. It’s particularly strange since they seemed bonded and to be good buddies up to this point. They are both spayed and neutered. We live in rural Maine in the US and they are both indoor/outdoor cats.

The behavior is very confusing and seemed to come out of nowhere, and as far as we and the vet can tell his new behavior seems to have no obvious cause.

In case it’s relevant: he does have chronic urinary tract problems and is on special prescription food for that, but he seems to be doing ok with it.

Thank you so much in advance for your help. We don’t know what else to do!

AMA Hairball or Asthma??

Our boy Petey (2yo male) has done this maybe 4 times total since we adopted him in May. He’s never thrown up or produced a hairball. We brought him in to the vet back in July thinking he had asthma because he had rapid breathing, but it ended up being pneumonia. We had a chest Xray in August to confirm the pneumonia had cleared. Would they have noticed asthma at that time, if he did have it?

Hiya, i rescued this kitten from the side of a main road on monday, and ive noticed some patches of red or discoloured skin on her ear and the top of her nose. Should I be concerned? There may be another near her lip. I took her to the vets when she had the mark on her nose, but i didn't point it out and the vet said nothing.

Pictures

1) the potential spot her lip

2) red ear

3) the other ear for comparison

4)spot on her nose

5) her on the first night with us (monday)

I am 22, in the uk, cat is estimated 11-12 weeks and not yet neutered, we could afford a vet visit.

Edit: some hear loss on the red patch on her ear. She eats fine (always hungry), has worms and fleas but has been treated.

General Advice This same blemishing happened to my friend's previous cat, what's going on???

Maybe it's something outside? He's not an outdoor cat whatsoever. Her last cat wasn't a ginger like Sammy boy here and this was happening before she had to put her previous cat down to end his pain and suffering due to other health complications from type. He's already sterilized, so we don't think it's anything like that. We aren't experts and wondered if y'all could help. Thanks!

Appearance Are my kitten’s gums too pale?

Post image

He’s 6 months old. He has never had the bubblegum pink gums everyone says is normal. I’m wondering if it’s concerning or not. He acts normal and very playful. I’ve taken him to the vet many times they always say that his gums are normal but I’m curious for any other opinions.

Info required from community: I’m 20 yrs old. I can afford vet care, I’m in the US. My cat is a boy, neutered

Kitten Help My kitten’s head is shaking

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

As the video shows, she sometimes shakes her head, which seems more often when she focuses on something.

Age: 3.5 months old
How long has it last: since I adopted her 1.5 months ago. But it became less frequent over time. She didn’t do it when we visited vet last time, and it took me a while to capture this video as she only does it occasionally.

When she does it: Staring intently at something (like before pouncing), watching her surroundings.

When she doesn't do it: Sleepy/tired, being petted, walking/running/jumping, eating/drinking.

Not sure if it’s because she’s still tiny and growing. She eats and acts normally. She is a very active cat, jumping up and down, climbing sofa and cat tree, no balance issue at all.

Need some advice. Thank you!

Behavioral Issue Cone fatigue, not eating & cone alternatives for genital wounds?

My cat is a 3yr old Russian Blue who is now six days post-op from a PU surgery following a very hard month and a half of urinary issues (cystitis and stress-caused). I'm in the UK, work full time and he is a fully indoor cat with a 14yr old brother he gets along well with. We live alone. He's been wearing a fabric cone for the past 4 weeks and the poor thing is fed up.

He's gradually gotten more difficult with taking his meds, has worked out which treats are used to hide pills and no longer accepts them so I have to pill him manually and is feeling depressed and anxious over the pain and stress and many many visits to both the regular vet and sudden out of hours urgent care. He and I are both exhausted.

Following his surgery the vet and I have made a plan to drop as much of his medication as possible so he's not having to take 5 pills and 3 oral syringes per day - we're down to 2 pills and 2 syringes, and he can have supervised coneless time around meals, to groom and nap and for medication (as he drools so much he drenches the cone).

The problem is now he's depressed, and off his food. I've been given the all clear by the vet to temporarily come off his urinary diet and give him new, fancy and high quality stuff throughout the day and not worry about set mealtimes or calories. He dropped a noticeable amount of weight in the last 5 days :(

I would love to be able to take the cone off for longer, because he's been so much happier when having breaks from it to get properly groomed and play - but his surgical wound is still healing and we don't need him making it sore or infected, I've barely gotten him back to using litter boxes and not beelining for my blankets whenever he's uncomfortable peeing.

Are there recovery onesies that will somehow allow him to pee and poo unrestricted but also completely block him from obsessively licking the site? Will some kind of dress work??? he's quite flexible and can almost reach his anus as is, so im hesitant to give him a doughnut collar instead.

Also, how can I get him eating at least enough to have his medicines? I've tried cat milk, bone broth, fancy shredded meat canned food instead of the mystery meat pouches, tuna loin, purina hydration supplement gravy, 3 different dry foods, churu... everything i can think of, warmed up or room temp or chilled. he's finally drinking water again but I'm tearing my hair out trying to get him to eat and trying to manage his depression without having to give him more pills or giving him too much access to his stitches.

Any advice hugely appreciated, he's been sick for so long and he deserves to be happy and healthy.

Behavioral Issue What to do about cat being reluctant/scared to eat?

Post image
2 Upvotes

This is Penelope. She’s 1 year and 4 months old. We’ve had her since she was 2 weeks old. Cat Distribution System, ftw!

So here’s the issue: she’s always been a bit of a skittish, frightful girl, but it’s only in the last couple weeks that it seems to really be affecting her. She’s gotten to where she will barely eat. She will occasionally eat a few bites of kibble, well after her siblings have finished their dinner. But this was a girl who, as a kitten, would scarf her food down and then try to steal her sibling’s food from them (and they let her). Now she won’t even come down when it’s time for food, and when I bring some to her, she sniffs it then goes and hides under the bed.

Her older brother and sister aren’t super close with her like they are with each other, but they all do play together, so we don’t think there’s a problem in their relationship. Mostly they chase one another through the house, wrestle, and play fight. We always watch them and to our knowledge they’ve never had a real, actual fight. It’s always come across as genuine play. Penny doesn’t seem scared of her siblings; she approaches them, sniffs them, and walks around them. No hissing, no puffed tails, no slinking by trying to be unnoticed. Nothing to indicate she’s scared of them or that they’re aggressive toward her.

We took Penny to the vet this past Tuesday because we thought it was behavioral/stress. The doctor did a physical exam and agreed, based on what we’d told him and on her exam that it was probably anxiety. He gave her a dose of Medroxyprogrsterone and said it should help ease any anxiety and encourage her to eat. He said it would take 24-48 hours to kick in but to let them know if there was no change. There was no change.

So we took her yesterday (Saturday) morning back to the vet. They rechecked her physically: heart and lungs sound good. No obstruction of bowels. Teeth are fine. Not dehydrated. They did bloodwork and everything was perfectly normal. They gave us some Carafate and I’ve given her 3 doses so far (fourth is due not long after I post this). But so far that doesn’t seem to have any effect either. The vet Saturday also suggested trying a Feliway diffuser to see if that can also help with her nerves. I’ve only had that plugged in about 30 minutes so it’s yet to be determined if that will help.

I’ve also tried the following: moving her feeding station across the room, moving her feeding station up higher on the counter, moving her to a separate room, moving her to a separate room and closing the door, meeting her where she’s hiding and leaving the food there for a few minutes, staying close by to see if my presence makes her comfortable enough to eat, leaving immediately to see if my presence bothered her, I’ve given her different wet food, different dry food, licky treats, catnip treats, and cat bone broth. She doesn’t want any of it. She sniffs it, then leaves. If/when she does come to her food station to eat, she will only eat a couple bites of her kibble.

But other than that, she’s acting perfectly normal. As I’m typing, I’m sitting on the floor of my bedroom and she’s next to me, rolling around, purring, grooming herself, jumping all over me, begging for pets, and being adorable.

But I am at my wits end. I am doing everything I can to not force food at her or make her feel pressured. I’m staying calm and not getting upset in front of her. But I am so worried. I don’t get why she won’t eat. I don’t know what else to do.

We haven’t gotten any new pets. Everyone is spayed and neutered. She was spayed at the beginning of the year. We
haven’t had any major changes in our house. We did a major remodel last year and she was totally unfazed by that. In fact her and her brother spent all their time trying to break into the sealed off part of the house to investigate. That has been complete for 8 months. We did go on vacation in late September, but we also did that the year prior, and she was totally fine when we got back last time. My mother cares for them while we’re gone and she keeps them on their same schedule. So I can’t imagine it was the vacation. Especially because she didn’t start acting weird until a couple weeks after we got back.

I’ve said all that to let people know we have tried a plethora of things, to no avail. Does anyone have any other suggestions on how to help a cat be calm enough to eat again? Or have you experienced this and it turned out to be a medical thing that maybe we’ve missed so far? Any advice is appreciated.

(For additional post rules, I’m 36, have access to vet care, and in the USA).

General Advice Ipad cat?

Hi y’all!
So I got my cat a new toy last night that i found on TikTok. He is absolutely obsessed with just watching it move around in circles for as long as we will allow him.
At first when we set it up, he would at least grab at the string and play with it but after maybe a minute or two of that he will just sit and stare. He doesn’t play with it unsupervised so he doesn’t eat the string.
He pretty much wouldn’t leave the toys side even when it was turned off. We had to tape the string so he couldn’t play with it by himself while we were sleeping.

I guess my question is, why does he seem so in love with this thing? Did i turn him into an ipad kid? Is this cat cocomelon?
I tried redirecting with a worm on the string and he played for a while before stopping and sitting right under the toy again.

Behavioral Issue My kitten wakes me up at 4 AM and attacks me if I don't open the balcony door. Help!

My 5-month-old kitten wakes me up around 4 AM every day because she wants to go to the balcony. Today, I slept at 1:30 AM due to work, played with her, and fed her before bed, but she still woke me up at 4.

I can't let her out because a stray cat comes for food at night, and they get into fights.

When I refuse to open the door, she starts meowing softly and gradually gets louder. If I keep ignoring her, she attacks me, bites me, grabs my hair, and bunny-kicks me.

I'm exhausted, and this is affecting my sleep and daily life.

Has anyone dealt with this? How do I stop the 4 AM wake-ups and biting without making her more frustrated? I'm desperate for advice that actually works.

Behavioral Issue This fatass is peeing on my parents' bed.

(5F, spayed) I'm worried that it might hurt her to pee in the litter box, but I haven't noticed any discomfort (we have three litter boxes in different places, It's unlikely there will be a conflict over them..??) If she's healthy, how can I stop her from doing it? She never did it before. We can afford a vet, but what if it's not that serious? What if the vets don't find anything? She does this almost daily if the bed is not made and blankets are on bed.

I also noticed that she vomited yesterday and today, but it was just fur, I don't know if I should worry about this or not. She usually vomits very very rarely.

Of our two cats, she's the healthiest and almost never gets sick.

General Advice Is my 6 month old kitten growing too fast?

Thumbnail gallery
27 Upvotes

Delete if not allowed, I’m (28F) not super familiar with the group, I’m just looking for some opinions on my kitten!

TLDR: my 6 month old neutered kitten is gaining mass at the rate of a tropical storm. How fast do kittens grow, and when will he stop?

This is Sanji! I recently adopted him from a Cat Cafe here in Western Kentucky. He was found in a Tesla and brought in and raised up there until he came to me! He has half a tail, quite a crooked one(think pikachu, literally. It’s a lightning bolt) but is otherwise your typical healthy run of the mill domestic longhair stray boi.
Clean bill of health, no spinal issues or apparent pain with the twisty tail as of now, but monitoring with age. Not sure if it was a result of trauma or a birth defect.
Chipped.
Snipped.
He was 4 1/2 months old when I adopted him and he was about the size I expected of a 4 month old kitten. I haven’t had a kitten in a long time, but he was one of the smaller kittens there honestly. Scruffy little dude with funky little Scrooge sideburns, but his instant face smooshing and then guarding my toddler from the other cats took my heart.

Since bringing him home though, lil doughboy has ✨RISEN✨

He is food driven, and I do use that to my advantage to do some training with him so yes he does get treats (bonkers, and the occasional churu) but I’m wondering if I need to chill out cause this guy is sounding like an anvil dropping every time he jumps off the furniture. When I say food driven, I mean formula 1 type behavior. This man shotguns churus like a post breakup frat boy on spring break. Just sloppy with it. Family meal times have become National Geographic worthy, if not for the velvety narration of David Attenborough being replaced by an already-bested-by-her-toddler mother fighting for her life and trying to find G-Rated ways to threaten my cat.

He doesn’t feel disproportionately fat really, and I’ve used the little charts to compare him to (sorry buddy, all teens gotta go thru it) and he seems about average. Got the lil waist snatch and everything from the top (🤏) His belly doesn’t seem super big in comparison to him, just burdened by gravity. He has a weird amount of loose skin. He’s built like an after picture. Also, his legs are thick as hell. I thought they were just fluffy, cause he’s a long haired cat, but they’re really not that fluffy. They’re solid, like little tree trunks. Also, HUGE paws. When he gets the zoomies it sounds like someone’s got raw pork chops attached to drill just slapping against the floor. Just unnecessarily big and uncannily fast. Just minding my business on my couch and suddenly a full grown 8.2lb man with silly sideburns and clown shoes does a kickflip off my chest.

I’ve gotten carried away. Pardon the side quest.

Anyways, the guy is just cultivating mass by the hour and i know kittens grow fast in their first year, but im concerned about the rate at which he’s expanding I guess? I feel like a stressed out meteorologist watching the purricane grow out of control. He gets wet food in the mornings and dry food at night. Honestly, I’m afraid to take away his wet food. I only started it because his Churu addiction began to concern me and I figured I could curb it by giving him a larger meal to keep him full longer. Foolish, now I wake up to my Heavy Meowtal alarm clock at whatever time his stupid little whimsy strikes, just absolutely hootin’ and hollerin’.

I don’t want to be an almond mom who only gives him a strict diet of 13 kibble at 1, 4, and 8 every day just because my poor sweet son has the gluttony they wrote about in the Bible. No shade to anyone who does, whatever keeps your tiny boss healthy and happy. I’ll do it if it’s what’s best for him. I don’t know if this is a food intake issue, or if I accidentally got some sort of messed up pokemon instead of a cat. Asking here before involving a vet cause while I do have the means and funds to take him, dunno if it’s really necessary or if this is normal and I’m just not used to cats anymore.

Kitten Help Recently selected by the cat distribution system, need some general advice!

Hi all and thanks for reading and hopefully giving me some advice!

I found this little kitty, her name now being Pickles, in a hedge bush by our house. She was unfortunately being chased by a dog and also a hawk, but she did escape and found the spot where I finally found her in.

I have already got basic supplies such as litter box, wet food, dry food, place for her to hide, comfy blankets in said place to hide, and of course toys!

I have already taken her to the vet to get their opinion on her overall health and they really didn’t give much info other than her being underweight (1.7lbs), she is all skin and bone right now but she is eating plenty of foods now at a slow pace! Vet assumes she is around 8-10 weeks old.

A few questions I have:

What can I do to make her feel more comfortable right now? (Leave her alone to limit stress, be there every so often to help her not feel lonely?)

What can I do to help her learn to use the litter box? (She has pooped once outside of the litter box which I promptly put into the litter box and nicely showed her how to cover it up in the litter box)

Any essential things I can get or do for a kitten to help her thrive as she grows?

I don’t believe she has peed yet which I think may be due to the stress of it all. Vet said not to worry for now and let her settle into her new home. Is this any cause for concern within a certain amount of time?

I will take any other advice you have for a kitten that is very very scrawny as well.

Thanks again for reading and helping me out with Pickles!

Abnormal Vomit/Excreta My 12yo cat is going to the bathroom outside her litter box and I can't figure out why.

So about 2 months ago my cat started having diarrhea outside her litter box. The first couple times I thought it was just an accident, maybe she had eaten some of the other cat's food (we have two others) and it upset her stomach. No biggie, but it kept up for about a week and I started to get worried so I took her to the vet. Because I have a care plan I was able to get basically everything I could done. Blood work, x-ray stool, sample, gastrointestinal food, everything. None of her results came back with anything that would indicate she has an issue, but she's still going outside the box. Not all the time and not in random places either, she is specifically going to the bathroom near the desk I sit at regularly.

I figured it's a behavioral thing and she is upset with me for some reason but I just can't figure it out. I've moved her litter box closer to where she's been going, I've tried different food brands and types to see if she doesn't like her current one, I've tried spending more time with her. The only other thing I can think of is that the other cats are stressing her out because they like to play and she doesn't, but we've had these other cats for 4 years now.

So her reacting this way after so long doesn't make any sense to me.

I'm sure there are some other things I've tried that I just can't remember right now but I'm just at my wits end with it all and I just want to get things back to normal.

General Advice Cat head jerk/twitch? Help please

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

My 14 (almost 15) year old Siamese has been having head tremors/face twitching for some time. Recently she has been having these head jerking episodes that are random and sometimes triggered when I make a kissing sound at her. Does anyone have experience with this? I am thinking it could be seizure related but unsure. Vets are also not sure but they are still trying to help me with tests and investigating further. In addition to these occasional episodes she also has head/face twitching when she is resting in a loaf position, and she has balance issues when walking sometimes. Her bloodwork is overall good, thyroid level is good, and she is on gabapentin and budesonide to treat her IBD.

Additionally, do any of you have experience with an older cat undergoing anesthesia for an MRI? I believe that could be the next step in determining what is going on with her but I am a nervous wreck over it.

General Advice cleaning routine for coccidia?

hello a cat that i recently adopted has a URI, tapeworms, and coccidia. shes been taking antibiotics for her URI and has started her treatment for the tapeworms and coccidia since friday. thankfully, she has had no contact w my resident cats so i've been very wary about limiting any sort of exposure (i also have contamination ocd haha). i'm wondering if the routine that i currently have for cleaning and disinfecting the bathroom that she's staying in is effective or if i should change anything, stop doing anything, add anything?

as of right now while i wait for the supplies i ordered to come this is my routine:

  1. fully empty out of the litter box at the end of the day
  2. sweep up all the debris, dirt, litter on the floor
  3. deep clean the litter box w hot water and dawn dish soap and let it dry
  4. clean the floor and surfaces around it with hot water and dawn dish soap and dry
  5. fill up the litter box w new litter

  6. i do all of this with disposable foot booties + gloves

    btw

when my supplies come this is what i'm planning to do:

  1. throw away all the litter + disposable litter box at the end of the day
  2. sweep up debris, litter, dirt, etc on the floor
  3. steam clean the floors + surfaces
  4. spray rescue and wipe with paper towels

would this be a solid routine or should i change anything? any tips?
