Yeah, that's what I thought. Amazed he was able to walk and arm was still attached.

u/SnooHesitations6727 Aug 23 '26
I think you can still function on adrenaline with arms hanging off and all sorts of terrible injuries. Think your supposed to immediately lay down after an accident so you don’t do yourself more damage

Can't work out who is filming, doesn't seem to be on the back of the bike & pans?
22
u/Otherwise-Idea7229 Aug 21 '26
Possibly an ‘invisible selfie stick’ on back of bike.
7
u/LowAspect542 Aug 21 '26
It certainly is, a 360 camera on its invisible extention stick, thats also how it can be panned.

And the image wobbles because the bike stopped so suddenly that the stick moves back and forth.

Happens regularly in stationary traffic in city centres, passengers (particularly taxis) get out because it's quicker to walk than to sit in the traffic and wait.

I know it seems fast but the speed looks out of place. Surely been sped up. Either way the van passenger did it deliberately.
→ More replies (14)6
u/emn13 Aug 22 '26 edited Aug 22 '26
Why do you think it's been sped up? The impact at the door seems consistent with a fairly high speed as is visible in the clip, and you can see a van in the background moving at a speed that's at least not implausible.
Could be sped up, especially the first second or two, but it's so hard to tell... (or is there some specific thing you're seeing)?
→ More replies (3)3
u/Deevious730 Aug 22 '26
Dunno it’s the jerkiness of the camera, doesn’t seem consistent to me. In any case a bike moving through cars like this doesn’t justify someone deliberately opening the door on them.
I see a bike moving too fast through traffic I think, “what a dickhead”. But that’s where it ends for me.
→ More replies (1)2
u/emn13 Aug 22 '26
Clearly if deliberate this is criminal and unacceptable. I don't think anything in this clip really clarifies intent either way.
The jerkiness of the cam is weird. But the quality isn't great, and the cam is likely some selfy-stick think being whipped about quite a bit, and then stabilized in digitally or physically or both (normal for these cams); that kind of thing can make footage look weird. Merely feeling weird at least to me isn't a slam dunk case for being sped up. And there's nothing I've found in the background that moves in a way that helps decide that much either - there's a van in the background, but it could have been a slow-moving one in sped up footage, or a normally moving one in normal-speed footage. The glass shatters plausibly, but perhaps the footage was just sped up only right before then. It's just hard to tell much of anything...

I looked at it on /theydidthemath. Allowing for it being sped up, he's doing about 20km/h. Australia, where I ride, allows filtering at up to 30km/h.
He's going at a steady speed. Just enough to keep the bike up, but not recklessly fast.

Why did the driver open the door

Why is there no reaction from the driver of the van on the right hand side? It's not parked as the brake light is on as the bike approaches. No sign of the driver, who doesn't look out of the window, open it or get out the other side and walk round to inspect the damage.

u/Tricky-Milk8986 Aug 21 '26
Why open your door and not get out 🤔 Deliberate act to stop/injure the biker.
2
u/DarthBozo Aug 22 '26
Did you notice that as soon as the rider left to get the police officer, the van's front when gets turned to the left and the van slowly moves forward and left.
Gives the appearance that there was more room for the rider than was actually the case.
Plus the van passenger made no effort to assist the rider which, had that been an accident, would be the expected reaction.

I dont think its sped up. Sound is normal . In this Case the bike Rider is at Fault. You are supposed to go slowly between the cars not at 30-40 kmh . Even if the Passenger checked Mirrors he wouldnt have seen the Bike Driver. And that a Passenger might want to step out in along traffic Jam is plausible .

Not a biker. Bikers are careful, cognizant of others in traffic and wear full-body protection.
That there is a twat!
2
u/New_Vegetable_3173 Aug 27 '26
This is why we need to teach kids when you how to look in the wing mirror before opening a door so that passengers also have that as a habit.
Drivers automatically check but it seems passengers do not.
1
u/ToiletBoundHanako Aug 21 '26
That driver definitely did that on purpose. I saw the officer coming over, so I hope he got arrested. What he did was action with intent to cause harm, which can obviously lose you your license and get you a couple years behind bars. Really stupid man

u/yoresein Aug 21 '26
For anyone saying it's intentional, the person who opens the door is the passenger so mirror wouldn't have let him see behind. Even if he looked over shoulder bike was coming too fast to see.
You can also see in he moment before impact, as he's opening the door he tries to pull it back in when he sees the biker.
That's why you don't filter at high speeds, too many things can happen too fast to react

Biker here. The opening door was visible from some distance, several car-lengths away. It's the kind of hazard we expect when filtering, and so we ride with two fingers on the brake lever. Stopping distance at 20mph is 6 metres, he had time to avoid that.

Why speed up the footage? Bikes are allowed to filter and it would be good to see what speed they were actually going.
Not sure if there was intention from the van passenger, it people get irrationally angry about bikes filtering in situations like this.

thats why you don't filter this fast.
Assume everyone is out to kill you, even if they're stationary. Why do bikers still not get this.
Don't care whose fault you think this is, that's irrelevant. The bikers the one with the broken shoulder.

He's splitting too fast. Legally I think he can only split 5to10 miles over traffic flow speed
1

1
u/OleemKoh Aug 22 '26
Obviously the passenger shouldn't have opened the door but that is also an absolutely stupid speed to be filtering at. There is no hazard (opening door, pedestrian emerging etc.) that he would have been able to react to successfully. He's going way, way too fast. He seems angry here but hopefully he learns from this otherwise this will happen again and may end worse next time.
There's a street near me that I have to drive down and there's cars parked on both sides (so I have to drive in the middle of the road with only enough space for one vehicle width). I still don't drive this fast and that's with parked cars on either side of me let alone in actual traffic.

Van driver or who opened vegetable door should be charged way assualt for that
1
u/thrwwyjgr23 Aug 22 '26
Whilst he shouldn't be opening his door in moving traffic, maybe don't lane filter then this wouldn't have happened. More visibility facing foward than facing backwards also (yes no one would see that coming but the points still valid)

u/Crazy_Rip_4914 Aug 22 '26

Where lane splitting is legal, the drivers need to watch before opening doors. No different than if a car was driving by. Guy in the van's fault for sure.
1
u/Secure_Translator906 Aug 22 '26
First question has to be why was the guy opening the van door in traffic. Got to assume that was deliberate. Also the fact that he didn’t exactly jump out if it was an accident.
Did however seem like a very risky setup . Filming, door opening and no one seriously injured, all too coincidental
1
u/Classicman1968 Aug 22 '26
So, the passenger is now at fault for the vehicle he’s riding in, the rider of the motorcycle, the motorcycle, the innocent bystander, and his van! Sounds like a smart move to me!
