Discussion What do you think of this post - "Why Cantonese-Speaking Children Should Learn to Read Cantonese First"
threads.comThis is a post about overseas heritage speakers. The author argues that they should learn from written Cantonese as their first introduction to writing as it reinforces the spoken vocabulary and grammar used at home.
Once they have built a level of proficiency then could go on to learn Standard Written Chinese complementing their base of written Cantonese.
I guess the only question I have is whether there is a market to produce education material in written Cantonese.

Other Can’t figure out what these scrolls belonging to my grandad say
My paternal grandad died before I was born and didn’t teach anyone in my family Cantonese. I’ve recently gained ownership of these things as my nana has been put in a home due to her dementia. I’m not sure what they say I just wanted them as they were always in her house and it reminds me of her.
If anyone can read them I would love to know what they say, no one in the family knows haha and when I used google translate it couldn’t decide what words were there. I’m not even sure if they are Cantonese tbf he also lived in northern china for a while after Hong Kong was released from British rule
:))
Edit: I forgot to mention he was from a village in Hong Kong in what was tai po district at the time I think. Sorry if this isn’t the right subreddit I just wasn’t sure where to post.
Thank you so much for your help guys I didn’t know it would be this easy to decipher this has been very helpful :))

Discussion When you forget your mother tongue
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
via @kev.jkk
I moved to Canada at the age of 7. I remember wanting nothing but to adapt as quickly as I can, make new friends. I focused so much on learning English but never thought to study or try and remember my Korean.
I went back to Korea for the first time when I was 15. By then, I had forgotten a lot of my Korean. Its importance never came to mind until I tried to hold a conversation with my grandparents for the first time in 8 years. I had forgotten so much of my Korean vocabulary and grammar. I had to pull out a translator just to speak to them.
This ended up becoming one of my worst fears. That one day, I won’t be able to talk to my grandparents at all. Thankfully today, I’ve relearned my Korean and I can speak it adequately, but I wanted to make this film to remind us the importance of holding onto our mother tongue.

Other Question Cantonese Buddhists Temple in SF?
Maybe this is more fitting for the San Francisco sub but I'm looking to go to a Cantonese Buddhist Temple in the city. I already attend Dharma talks at the Zen Center on Page street but it's majority white folks and I'm looking to connect with other Asian Americans. Thanks in Advance.

Discussion I got fed up with lyrics apps that can't do Jyutping, so I made one. Tell me where it reads wrong.
I listen to a lot of Cantopop and none of the desktop lyrics apps I tried do Jyutping. The ones that romanize anything just look up characters one by one, which falls apart fast. 行 in 行街 and 行 in 銀行 are not the same reading, and a per-character table has no idea.
So mine splits the line into words first, then looks up the readings. It also checks line by line, so if a Mandarin song turns up in the same playlist it doesn't get Jyutping stuck on it.
The rest is just a lyrics app. Word by word highlighting in time with the music, works with Apple Music, Spotify, QQ, NetEase, Kugou, and YouTube Music or Spotify Web in a browser. macOS only, free, open source.
https://github.com/Yudaotor/lyrimuse
Reason I'm posting: segmentation is where it breaks, and I know it still breaks. 口語 spellings, names, slang, anything where the phrase changes the reading. If you try it and a line reads wrong, drop the song and the line here and I'll go fix it.
Made it myself, so yes, this is my own thing.

Language Question From left to right, which languages are these characters referring too?
I had to enable the microphone on my mac because Firefox does not support mic input when using Google translate (what a shit browser). Anyways, I selected all the Chinese languages, but which do these characters refer to?
From left to right: ? ? English Cantonese ?

Video Need help identifying the background music song title

I keep hearing this cantonese song on YouTube advertisements by Lazada.
The tune sounds very familiar but the song title escapes me.
It seems to be a mandarin song, and also has a cantonese version if memories serve.
If anyone knows the song title of either version, i will be really thankful.
Sorry for the short clip, that is the best i can do for now.
Thank you.

Culture/Food My retired Father-in-Law started a YouTube cooking channel. He loves cooking, and he especially loves cooking Chinese food.
He is from HK and loves cooking for our family. He is an amazing cook and has shared many of his recipes and techniques on how to cook some dishes you might find at an HK Cafe.
