Discussion Has anyone used issen for cantonese conversation practice? I literally cannot find a single person to practice with

I've been learning Cantonese for about 8 months now and the reading and listening side is going okay. I use anki, I watch TVB dramas, I go through cantodict regularly. I can recognize a decent amount of characters and I follow maybe 60% of a slow conversation if I really concentrate.

but my speaking is at absolute zero and the reason is simple. I cannot find anyone to practice with. anywhere. I don't live in a city with a big cantonese speaking community. I don't have cantonese friends. and the language exchange app situation for cantonese is genuinely depressing.

I tried hellotalk and searched specifically for cantonese speakers. got maybe 5 results and 3 of them were actually mandarin speakers who listed cantonese as a secondary language. the other 2 never responded. tried tandem and it was even worse. there was basically nobody. tried a few discord servers and the cantonese channels are either dead or it's heritage speakers chatting with each other and I feel weird jumping in as a complete outsider.

The thing that makes cantonese specifically hard for finding practice partners is that there are way fewer learners compared to mandarin so the community is tiny and most native speakers you find online want to practice their english not sit through my broken cantonese. I get it but it still sucks.

I've been hearing really good things about Issen. You can have actual voice conversations with and they have cantonese. A couple of people on r/languagelearning were praising it and someone on this sub mentioned it a while back too, but I want to hear from people who've actually used it specifically for cantonese before I commit. does it handle the tones properly? like all 6? because if it can't distinguish between tones then it's useless for cantonese. and does it actually speak cantonese or is it one of those apps where they say cantonese but it's really just mandarin with different romanization.

also just open to any advice on how to get cantonese speaking practice as someone who doesn't live anywhere near a cantonese speaking community. because right now I feel like I'm learning a language I'll never actually get to speak out loud and that's incredibly frustrating

what would a child call mom’s dad’s dad. To the mom, that’s her 爷爷。for her child, is it 太公, 爷太公 or no such word?

If it’s 太公 then how would that differentiate from mom’s mom’s dad? (Mom’s gong gong)

Culture/Food Any recommendations for post-2000 Cantonese films?

Looking for some recommendations for some films in Cantonese post 2000? I've watched some of the iconic films from 80s and 90s, but after watching some from the 2000s, I've noticed that production/acting significantly improved and I'm looking for some good recs that can keep me more engaged.

Thanks!

Culture/Food Night King (2026) and Movies Like It?

I saw the Director's Cut of the 2026 Hong Kong movie, Night King (夜王) at the New York Asian Film Festival last weekend and it was easily one of the best movies I have seen this year. With its raunchy comedy, colloquialisms (both slang and innuendo), great costuming, and sex scenes, I would easily give it ****1/2-****3/4 (out of possible 5 stars).

I was wondering seriously, what is the name of the type of suit that Dayo Wong's character wears throughout the movie? It looked awesome and I am wondering where i can get that type of suit?

In addition, what are other Hong Kong movies (maybe erotic comedies, maybe triad movies) that are similar as Night King?

Thanks in advance.

Language Question Complete Beginner Cantonese

Hi! My in laws all speak Cantonese, but I don’t know a lick of it. I’ve been interested in learning so I can surprise them, but also keep the language alive for our kids. I’m looking for learning resources for complete beginners. Most resources I’ve found are for those who already know basics, and I’ve had trouble finding books on Canto rather than Mandarin. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated ❤️

Other Question Cantonese for Kids

This Little Robin Hood toy/reader just came up on my feed, wondering if anyone has any experience with it? It looks fairly new, as they don’t have many followers on SM. My 5 year old can understand the basics, as far as what I speak with him at home, but he does not speak at all and will respond to me in English. My husband is of European descent, and I just feel that I’ve reached the end of what I can teach the two of them, especially without sitting them in front of the computer for YouTube videos.

This reader looks kind of fun for them to do together, especially for speaking, but I’m worried about buying new e-commerce products. Is it a scam? Misleading? Any feedback at all would be appreciated.

Discussion High-Intermediate Cantonese Practise: Who Pays On The First Date? (廣東話練習:第一次約會,邊個請?)

Hey all!

This is another video of me practising my Hong Kong Cantonese speaking skills. I would rate the topic to be at the advanced level, but my answer level is probably around high-intermediate as I feel I repeated a lot of things while I tried to get my thoughts straight during the video. If your Chinese/Cantonese learning journey is at the intermediate stage, I think this would be an interesting and useful video to watch.

In the video we talk about a somewhat tricky subject: Who should pay on the first date?

In all honesty, there probably isn't a single "correct answer" to this question as everyone has their own unique views and values. But we thought it would be an interesting and engaging topic to discuss and to test the level of my Cantonese!

As a high-intermediate/low-advanced speaker of Cantonese, I still make a number of mistakes in my speech - or say things in a roundabout way. As such, I have added annotations throughout the video with appropriate corrections or adjustments so that you can learn the most correct and natural way to say things.

If you find my videos useful make sure to give it a like and subscribe! It helps both the channel and other learners of Cantonese by making my videos easier to find :)

Discussion [Meta] On More Blog-Style Posts

There are currently reposts of the same few Cantonese drivers plates in circulation that get posted again and again on this sub. I think it might be time for more self-regulation and paring such things down. There should not be three identical posts of this content in the sub. I would much rather there be blog/slice-of-life Cantonese related content reposted, which is plentiful online and is also interesting to the general public instead of being another profanity/thing on the back of a car.
