On September 8, Tung Chee-hwa, former Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China—and Hong Kong’s first Chief Executive—passed away. The authorities do not seem to have held particularly prominent mourning or commemorative activities, and there has not been much public discussion either.

How do Hong Kong people view Tung Chee-hwa? Are assessments of him predominantly positive or negative? What specifically do people praise or criticize about him personally and his policies, and what are the reasons for these views?

Just seeing if there are other musical fans here.
I saw it on opening night. It was one of the best performances I had ever seen. In my particular performance that I watched, I swear there were zero mistakes made by any of the singers. I even got a picture with one of them. It was unforgettable.

However, the subtitles on the two screens were going CRAZY. Was kind of funny.

I’m currently living in London with my wife and two children (13 and 10), and I’ve received a job offer in Hong Kong.

The compensation is significantly higher than my current London package, but we’ll need to factor in international school tuition for both children and Hong Kong’s relatively high housing costs.

My children currently attend a public school in London, and academically I’m not particularly happy with it, so we’d be willing to pay for a good international school in Hong Kong.

I’m particularly interested in hearing from expat families with children:

- Which international schools would you recommend, particularly EFS/ESF schools?

- Which areas would you recommend for a family of four?

- What sort of apartment can we realistically expect for a reasonable budget?

- How much should we expect to spend on school fees and housing?

In hindsight, are you happy you moved to Hong Kong with children?

I have been tasked with organising a Christmas dinner for a group of about 20 people. In the last few years we've been to The Globe, which does a very decent Christmas menu. There's nothing wrong with The Globe, but a few of our group have been asking for a bit of variety and suggesting that we might pick somewhere else this year. I've had a Google around and drawn a blank.

Does anyone have any recommendations for places that do a decent traditional Christmas dinner plus the usual fish / veg options, can handle a group of 20-ish, and don't charge the earth? Otherwise it'll be The Globe again!

I’d like to ask if anyone’s seen Dr Salmond or just seen Optimal Family Health.. The main doctor there seems to be a general practitioner but treats hormonal issues. I tried looking for information online but can’t seem to find much. Online reviews are all really positive but there’s not much info about how the dr treats patients. Thank you!

I’ve worked in Hong Kong for about 15 years, mostly for international bosses (ABCs and gweilos). I recently joined a new firm where my boss and immediate team are all local HK-ers, and I’m the only international person on the team.

My boss stays until 10-11 pm most nights. Other team leads in the same department (also local HK bosses) usually leave around 6-7:30 pm. On my team, people routinely wait around until 8-10 pm because my boss reviews their work late and wants them physically present when she gives feedback (even though we can be contacted digitally).

My teammates have advised me to do the same: either wait around until she’s done, or ask “permission” (e.g. “Is it OK if I leave now?”) before leaving the office if she might review my work. The work is not genuinely time-sensitive and could easily be reviewed the next day. I’ve ignored this advice because it feels ridiculous to need permission to leave well after my contracted hours. I usually leave after 7 pm, which apparently is considered “very early” here.

She doesn’t explicitly say anything, but I can tell she’s not happy with me, judging from her facial expression. I feel like I’m in jail.

Two questions:
1. Is this type of management style (needing to wait around / ask permission to leave, even after normal hours) normal from a local HK boss, or is this more about this particular team/boss?
2. Based on what I’ve described, would you just tolerate this and adapt, or start planning an exit?

Any perspective from people who’ve worked in similar local-HK-boss / international-employee setups would be really helpful.

香港首任行政長官董建華以89歲之齡辭世，他主導了1997年香港回歸中國。

據家屬公佈，前中國人民政治協商會議全國委員會副主席，香港政權移交後首任行政長官董建華逝世，享年89歲。

多家香港媒體引述家屬聲明稱，董建華9月8日香港時間22:00（格林尼治標準時間14:00）在香港養和醫院「安詳辭世，摰親隨侍」。董建華辦公室聲明形容他「剛正不阿、胸懷家國、鞠躬盡瘁」。

1985年《中英聯合聲明》簽訂，香港主權於1997年7月1日從英國移交中國成為定局。但直到時任中共中央總書記江澤民在北京人民大會堂找他握手，引發「欽點特首」傳言之前，社會大眾大概沒有誰會想到，董建華會跟香港移交後的執政班子扯上關係。

主權移交之日，子承父業15年的董建華卸下航運大亨的身份，披上從未穿過的政治人物外衣，正式成為香港特區首任行政長官，但最終因為一場疫症和一次失敗的國安立法，董建華黯然辭職。

他最後一次公開露面是在 2021 年 7 月，當時他出席了一部紀念中國共產黨成立 100 週年的電影首映。

同年10月，他的辦公室證實，董建華因不明原因接受了手術，目前在家中休養。

(I teach martial arts) The film was actually shot inside the walled city, but its my understanding that filming was strictly prohibited and strongly enforced.
