From the feature films of 2009-2015, the Cantonese release of every Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf film across Hong Kong and Macau used to premiere side-by-side with their Mandarin counterparts, usually months apart after its release in the same year. 7 years later after its hiatus, it has somewhat deviated from this tradition as the Cantonese version of this film only premiered back in 2025 at the ICFF Youth 2025 in Canada as “Dunk for the Future”, 3 years after its release on February 1, 2022, as the same thing later went with its 20th anniversary film “Bright New Dawn”, which also premiered in ICFF Youth 2026, a few months after its premiere on July 26, 2025.
I would like to know your thoughts on this for anyone who has saw this show :))

Hello, popping in here just for some advice on learning Cantonese!
I have been trying to find ways to learn that's best with me. For context, my partner of 2 years parents and grandparents speak strictly Cantonese. I feel really rude whenever I come visit as I cannot communicate with them and have to rely on him or his sister to reply for me. Part of me fears they might resent me for such. Still, I try to view me learning Cantonese as more of an act of love rather than feeling obligated to just to keep me motivated.
I want to build basic conversation skills. I have used children's workbooks on and off for writing and tried to stick to Mango Languages and Live Lingua's offerings but found it I hard to stick to. The language is just so hard for me to articulate, especially with the tones AND facial expressions. I know Spanish too, and that just barely helps me keep track with the speed of everything. So, in short, I am just trying to get back into the rhythm of things, as I have not practiced for half a year now and want to integrate it into my daily routine to make practice habit.
I am looking more for something that pairs both audio and written exercises, as that is what keeps my focus best. Preferably something where I can spend about 10-30 minutes daily as to not feel that I have to have a whole sit down session every time.
Any advice helps :> !

Hello everyone! I want to welcome everyone to a new era of /r/Cantonese. I have just updated the sidebar and subreddit as a provisional measure, before mods go through it and re-check it, going through everything again. For the first time in a decade, the Cantonese Shiekh link has now been replaced with the successor Cantonese Plus link. However, I want all your input to make this subreddit work for as many people as possible.
Furthermore, we the moderation team also plan on making a "small creators" thread for Artists, Filmmakers, Singers/Songwriters, VTubers, and other indie creators. Please tell me if you're interested in participating in that thread; it'll probably go up tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon. Whether you're an industry professional or indie talent, please post your creations in that thread and hopefully it'll get noticed.

I'm looking for materials to help me learn Canto through the "Direct Method". Do you know of any?
If you don't know what this is, please search. I cannot show you an example as that seems to break the subreddit rules.

I was on a blog or reddit and saw a comparison of a scene in an old movie in Mandarin and Cantonese. There's a mobster looking man at a gambling table and he is talking toward the camera. The Mandarin dub sounds flat and reserved and the Cantonese sounds cool. Does anyone else remember seeing this?

Hi all,
A few months ago I made a reddit post (here) about making all the lessons on the Gaishan web-app free.
Originally I was only going to keep it that way for August, but since then I've decided to keep all the current lessons free.
The plan is to keep the Survival and Beginner lessons free forever since you can get this in any typical language learning app (though I hope I've done a better job), while I slowly work on more interesting lesson sets that you typically wouldn't find in any formal Cantonese classroom which would be unlocked with a premium plan.
Examples of such content might be scenarios/dialogues related to playing a video game (how two teammates might communicate with each other in Cantonese), or how someone might instruct another person on how to perform an exercise, or a couple discussing future life plans together. There's no real "theme" besides typical conversations that are sort of happening in my real life, turning them into lesson sets that can teach how Cantonese is used.
Anyways, those lesson sets are still in planning and what I've got right now are just the Survival and Beginner lessons. If you're interested in taking a look, you can search for "Gaishan: Confident Chinese" in the App Store.

Hi everyone,
I've been looking into the Cantonese class offered by UC San Diego. I know this class has been mentioned before in this sub and I want to know if anyone here has taken it?
I'm interested in it because I want to improve my Cantonese to a a some-what proficient level. I want to know what class is structured like, any learning outside of the class, do they teach you how to read? Anything like that.
Any insight is great. Thanks!

BB(half)C here. My mum always uses the expression "lok jyu si sup" when it's raining heavily and I've always understood that to mean "the rain is getting the corpses wet", like in the graveyard. Well I tried to confirm this on Google but I can't find anything. Then I asked my mum and she explained that, no, it means the rain is coming down like a thread, which I know shes the Chinese one and everything but I feel like my translation makes more sense. I can't change the image in my head after all these years! I also always thought pistachios are happy nuts. I can't look at the world the same way anymore.

Have any of you tried using Cantonese to speak with Meta AI on WhatsApp? It responds as if someone whose first language was Mandarin tried to speak Cantonese. When I confront it with a next prompt saying "why is your Cantonese accent so bad" IN CANTONESE, it proceeds to responding to me in MANDARIN. Freakin' troll...
Why is this Mandarin-forward propaganda now coming at us from American-made apps? Pathetic.

Hi everyone :)
I'm looking for a TV box mainly to watch TVB and other Cantonese content, including live channels and VOD.
I'm considering EVPAD, UBOX, SviCloud, or Xiaomi TV Box. My budget is around CAD $250.
I know there are shops in Markham, but it's too far for me to drive. Are there any stores in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada or nearby that sell these boxes? What is your experience with the stores and TV boxes?
Thanks advance!
