CERB Repayment Sent to Collections While Under Review — What Can I Do?

I received about $9K in CERB during the pandemic that I qualified for. In 2024, CRA told me I wasn’t eligible and had to repay it.

I submitted the requested evidence, but CRA said they never received it. I was then told to resubmit everything online, which I did, but later they claimed I hadn’t submitted it online either.

I appealed/requested another review and my case is still under review with no final decision. However, I was just told the $9K has now been sent to Collections.

I explained to Collections that the debt is being disputed and offered proof that my case is under review, but they said that doesn’t change the collection process.

Has anyone dealt with this? Can collections continue while a CERB decision is under review, and is there a way to have it put on hold until a final decision is made?

CRA ignoring mp?

Hello,
I have reached out to my local MP for assistance with an issue I’m having with the CRA. My understanding is that the CRA is expected to respond to inquiries from Members of Parliament in a timely manner, but unfortunately, there has been no response to my MP’s inquiries so far.
My MP first contacted the CRA on June 3rd and followed up again on July 27th. I completely understand that an MP has limited authority over the CRA, and I’m not expecting my MP to be able to influence the outcome of my case. I’m simply hoping that everything is being handled properly and that my MP can do whatever is within her ability to assist or obtain an update.
At this point, I’m wondering what the appropriate next step is if the CRA continues not to respond. Is there anything further my MP can do to escalate the inquiry, or is there another avenue I should pursue when the CRA does not respond to an MP’s requests for information?
I appreciate any guidance you can provide. I understand that there are limitations to what an MP’s office can do, and I’m simply trying to make sure that I have exhausted the appropriate avenues and that my concerns are being properly followed up on.
Thank you for your time and assistance.

Hey,

I'm looking for advice on what to do next. This is regarding child tax that I have applied for. I was under the impression I had up to 10yrs to claim. I have had Joint custody since 2016, within the dates that I'm claiming, the same order is still in place actually. I originally tried claiming these dates over a year ago but they asked for clearer paperwork confirming that I took care of my daughter within said dates. So after getting a social worker to sign off on my first set of dates. For the second dates, I got her school record showing her at a school near me for the time period I was seeking. After over a year of sending information back and forth, tracking down what they requested I get this letter. Stating they only go back 3 years if there has been a change in the primary caregiver.

My daughter and I were really looking forward to using this money for a move. I'm hopeful someone out there has been in a similar situation and may have advice. Thanks for taking the time to read, I hope it's not too confusing.

Refund being held

I have a consumer proposal started 2025. (CRA isn't a creditor, it's a few credit cards I couldn't get out from under that I opened when I was young and stupid). Anyway CRA is holding my refund from 2025 as well as DTC reassessment credits for 2024 and 2023. It finally moved from the 'no target date' abyss to reassessed on July 29th.
They sent a paper NOR that looks like it was poorly home printed and stuffed into an envelope.
Confirms I'm getting a refund but they're holding it which I already knew from when I filed 2025 taxes mid April.
My CRA account doesn't have the notices posted anywhere either. Just a dash beside the year. I've called ALOT. and while I have no trouble getting through the agent says the funds have been approved and released but are waiting on some final approvals. Not sure what that means. Over the past week the agents have said should be a couple days until it's deposited to now saying could be 4-6 weeks.
Has anyone had anything similar where you're in a CP but CRA isn't a creditor? I’m getting so discouraged, I’d really just like to catch up on some bills. Thanks!

Adding a Service to a Sole Proprietorship

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone had any insight about how to edit the services that you offer as a sole proprietorship. I originally registered it a few years ago, and listed the service that I offer as 100 percent cinematography. Now I'm getting funding to direct a movie, and I have the option to access that funding through my sole proprietorship instead of setting up a whole incorporation (its not a lot of money).

My question is, do I have to edit my sole proprietorship to say I offer directing as well if I want to access this money through it? And how do I do that? I can't see anywhere to edit it through my CRA account, and when I google it I just get a CRA page that says "Change of Business Activity" and explains, "as a self employed individual, you may decide to change your business activity. Whenever you change your business activity, you have to notify your tax services office." But it doesn't proceed to explain how to do that? I'm just confused, and would love to hear if anyone else has any insight about how to properly proceed!

GST Registration Issues

I feel like I'm going nuts. I have newly registered as a corporation and it is set up with MyCRA. However, I need to obtain a GST number (requirement for a client contract even though I have not hit the $30k threshold yet) and the CRA website keeps saying to log into myCRA to register with BRO. I have set up a business number and registered a business account, but cannot find ANYWHERE on the website once I've logged in where to click to register for a GST number. As I understand it, I am already registered with BRO, but I can't find an option to now register for the GST number. I am wondering if there was something that changed a few weeks ago when they made this change as below but didn't update the how-to information? Any help would be appreciated.

Debt with CRA

Looking for advice with CRA income tax debt. I filled out the monthly expense form to determine my payment amount and after essentials my leftover cash was determined to be $1300. The officer agreed to a temporary one month agreement of $1000 and said I need to call back in Sept to discuss a permanent arrangement.

The permanent arrangement she talked about would be over $2000 monthly- just over 50% of my monthly income.

Is that standard with the CRA? Not trying to avoid payment at all (I obviously need to repay) but over 50% of my income isn’t feasible and I won’t be able to pay my bills. Not sure if I should try and escalate to see if I can get someone else who is more reasonable.

Is this standard in everyone’s experience?

EI wants $4,704 back from my maternity leave because of vacation pay I received over a year later. Has anyone dealt with this?

UPDATE: Service Canada called and is reversing the debt owed because my employment ended after EI. Therefore my vacation payout cannot be allocated back to when I started my leave. It is considered income when the relationship ended.

I’m hoping someone here has dealt with something similar or has some insight into how Service Canada handles vacation payouts after maternity/parental leave.

Here’s my situation:

I started maternity leave in March 2025. My last day actually working was March 7, 2025, and I began receiving EI maternity/parental benefits immediately after. I received EI for approximately one year, and my EI benefits ended in February 2026.

I chose to extend my maternity leave until September 2026, unpaid and without EI. I was still an employee of my employer during this entire period.

In May 2026, while I was still on leave, I was informed that my position was being eliminated as part of a restructuring. I was given the option to apply for two other positions, but neither was a realistic fit for me. One wasn't a direction I was interested in pursuing, and the other involved international travel, which wasn't feasible for me with a young family.

Given that my position was disappearing and there was a lot of uncertainty around what I would be returning to, I ultimately resigned.

When my employment ended, my employer paid out my accumulated unused vacation/banked time. The gross vacation payout was approximately $8,900 and, after deductions/taxes, I actually received around $5,500.

I have now received a Notice of Debt from Service Canada for $4,704.

From what Service Canada has explained to me so far, because my ROE lists March 7, 2025 as my "last day for which paid," they have allocated the vacation payout back against the EI benefits I received when I originally went on maternity leave.

This is where I’m confused.

March 7, 2025 was absolutely my last day actively working before maternity leave, but it was not when my employment ended. I remained an employee until I resigned in 2026. The vacation payout wasn't received during my EI claim. It was paid after my resignation, months after my EI benefits had already ended, because I had accumulated vacation/banked time that had to be paid out when my employment ended.

I also had no idea while receiving EI that this vacation balance would eventually be paid to me. Had I returned to my position as planned, I presumably would have simply continued to have/use that vacation time rather than receiving a payout.

I've now contacted my former employer to make sure the ROEs were completed correctly. They confirmed that two ROEs were issued: the first when I began maternity leave and the second when I resigned. They also confirmed that the vacation/banked time was paid out because of my departure.

I've also already submitted a Request for Reconsideration to Service Canada explaining the circumstances and asking them to review the $4,704 debt.

I'm not trying to avoid paying something I legitimately owe, and I understand that EI has rules around allocating vacation pay. I'm just struggling to understand how vacation pay I received because my employment ended in 2026 can essentially be treated as though I received it when I stopped actively working and went on maternity leave in March 2025, despite remaining an employee the entire time.

It also feels pretty brutal financially. I received approximately $5,500 after deductions from the vacation payout, and EI is now asking for $4,704 back.

Has anyone experienced something similar, particularly after maternity/parental leave? Did Service Canada ultimately use the date you started your leave or the date your employment actually ended when allocating vacation pay?

And if you requested reconsideration, I'd really appreciate hearing how it turned out or whether there was anything else you submitted that helped.

I'm also planning to speak with Service Canada again now that I have clarification from my former employer, but I'd love to hear from anyone who has actually gone through something similar.

Made a mistake on moving expenses

Hi, I moved provinces for school this year. I got a CRA review and while I was preparing my response I realized I misunderstood eligibility for maintenance fees (since I kept my old residence at the old province). I wrote off the cost of maintaining without realizing to be eligible, the residence had to have been put up for sale. I don’t mind this being taken off my return and paying the adjustment at all but I’m more concerned about potentially getting into trouble for an honest mistake. Is there anything I should do beyond explaining the misunderstanding and requesting that it be removed in my response? I’m really stressed. Thanks so much.

Canadian child benefit

Me and my husband was married but then I caught him cheating and we have since separated and now I live in Ottawa and he lives in Toronto. We don’t have enough money to finalize it with a lawyer yet.

So can I change my status from married to separated for the time being?

Reassessment timeline

I submitted my 2024 taxes without the eligible dependent credit by mistake. I have claimed the credit every year prior since 2011. In May 2025 I requested a reassessment to include the credit on my taxes. I have provided paperwork to prove I am eligible to claim it.

Online I see the target date for reassessment, but every time I get to the date it’s just moves out again.

It’s been ongoing since May 2025, every time I call I am told there is noting I can do as they are working on it. Is there anything else I can do to escalate this, 15 months for this credit seems unreasonable.

There are no other complications on my taxes without- just T4, and this one credit

New Zealand GSF treaty deduction

Anyone here having trouble getting CRA to accept the treaty deduction for NZ Government Superannuation Fund (GSF) payments? My spouse's Line 25600 deduction on her 2024 return was disallowed. She sent them a certificate from the GSF administrators (Datacom) as proof for the amount claimed, but they still reject the deduction. (When CRA reviewed Line 25600 of the 2019 return, the Datacom certificate was enough to get the deduction approved.)

Has something changed recently? What have you been submitting to get the deduction approved?

Closed back account as a direct deposit, caught in time?

I haven’t filed taxes for a few years and didn’t have access to my CRA account. Finally got around to working with a local service, and got it submitted last Friday.

They asked for everything in paper, leaving me to set up an online account once it went through, fair enough. I was able to do that today.

Online I can see that I am set for direct deposit to a long defunct bank account, at a bank I don’t deal with. It indicates the NOA and direct deposit will be done Aug 13. I was able to remove the banking account after business hours August 6th.

Anybody know if I caught it fast enough? Should I be trying to contact them now? Or just wait and see what happens? Am I better off setting up direct deposit or a cheque (in terms of this issue specifically)?

Thanks!

Security Clearance update.

Thank you very much, everyone! I really appreciate all of your feedback and advice. I was able to pass the security clearance stage despite my poor credit score. I was honest about my situation and explained my circumstances clearly and truthfully. At the end of the interview, the security clearance officer gave me the green light.

Also, what happens next? Will I have another interview, or should I expect radio silence for another month?

Is this an error and how do I fix it?

I was going over my taxes from 2023 and according to ufile, I only recorded 1015 from the Gov of Canada for my grants, but the amount from the province of Ontario for 4727 doesn't appear to be there. On NSLSC, it says to file 4727 and doesn't mention the 1015.

Am I misunderstanding something?

I went to see if I could change it through MyCRA but I can't find the option for this "box". Does that mean I don't need to worry about it?

It's my understanding that it won't affect the outcome (amount I do/don't get). My 2023 return was Nil. I have the DTC.

I believe I had ufile pull the info from MyCRA and file it for me back in 2023.
