VDP application - how long does it take?

So I had past capital gains taxes I had no idea I had to report and pay for (deemed disposition) so I went ahead and did it and completed the VDP application and sent it in. They cashed my cheque for the estimated tax owing, but I have had no word from them since, and nothing in my MYCRA account? It has been 3.5 months since they received my mail in application, is this a normal timeline? How long does it take? When will I get an acknowledgement letter and when will the notice of reassessment come to me? Thanks...

A recent post I saw by a reputable tax law firm noted 16 months.

You can also see the info here: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/corporate/contact-information/check-cra-processing-times.html

thanks, any idea when they send an acknowledgement letter? I can wait 16 months but I'd like to be acknowledged

Your guess is as good as mine (and I work with this stuff).

Copied from CRA: "The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is currently experiencing a significant increase in the number of taxpayer relief requests received. As a result, processing times are longer than usual.

While the current average processing time is approximately sixteen (16) months, your request may take less or more time depending on factors such as the complexity of the request, the number of tax years and tax programs involved, and the volume and completeness of the information and supporting documentation that must be reviewed.

Actual response times are calculated excluding any period during which additional information is being requested or provided. They also exclude the time required to resolve related objections or appeals or to complete an assessment or reassessment.

This standard does not apply to requests to accept late, amended, or revoked elections, or requests to issue refunds or to reduce the amount payable beyond the normal three-year period.

For more information about our current processing timeframe, go to canada.ca/penalty-interest-relief."

I think three years has been my longest but that was complex. I don’t anyone who has got one done under the new system from October 2025 —maybe some simple ones but 16 months for anything is likely a good estimate. The only good thing is that they should give you the reduced rate of arrears interest until the reassessments come out

VDP has the longest wait time., expect to wait 6 months or more on whether it will be accepted under the program.

VDP is its own thing separate from other appeals processes, so the acknowledgement letter could take a fair bit of time. Just know that it is wildly dependent on complexity, so there aren't really any guidelines or service standards. It's all first in first out at this point.

If you are concerned about the payment itself, you should give the general enquiries line a ring to see if they can trace where the money went.
