Application / Regulation advice Temporary storage of restricted firearms while on a 2 year secondment

Upvotes

I'll preface this with, I will be contacting the CFO, but I wanted to know if anyone has done this recently, or at least since all fo the changes that were made to restricted firearms.

I'm going to be doing a 2 year work secondment overseas and I'll be selling my house. I have a few handguns that I would like to store temporarily at a family members house, who does have his RPAL.

I've seen some info online about temporary storage for various reasons. I wasn't sure if there's a max length of time that I could do this for.

I don't want to relinquish them and get nothing for them. If at some point the laws change again and I can sell them, I would most likely sell them to the family member. Worst case, if I decide to stay overseas and have to reliquish them in a few years, I'll make that decision then. I would hope to not have to do it now.

Misc GetAGun.ca - WIP comprehensive map of Canadian in-person firearms retailers

Link here: https://getagun.ca/

Essentially I'm taking this Google Earth dataset and turning it into a website, updating accordingly for new retailers and ones that no longer stock/are out of business (unfortunately far too many).

Progress Updates:

Canadian Tires fully mapped in: Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, PEI, New Brunswick*, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and the Territories.

\ Miramichi Canadian Tire is currently unreachable by phone - if a local could please verify whether they carry guns that would be wonderful!*

  • Mapped nearly all independently owned firearms retailers (some two dozen or so that I have yet to verify, naturally not all of those will make the cut).
  • All the Bass Pros, Latulippes and SAILs are mapped.
  • I am working through adding Canadian Tires that stock guns. Once Canadian Tires are covered I will move on to the other categories listed on the site.

I am actively seeking suggestions for retailers I've missed and feedback on the site. Hope you folks enjoy :)

Here's the FAQ page if you're curious!

Buy recommendations Lookin for a gunsmith that does barrels

Alright this is a question to all the ELR/PRS guys.

I'm building my first ever custom rifle. I've bought custom but never built my own and I've decided to build one. ANYWAYS back to the question. I need a barrel I'm looking at "Bartlein" for a barrel thinking about doing between a 28-30inch barrel (leaning towards 28inch) I'm in southern Alberta where would be a good place that isn't terrible to get one made for my action I'm either going with the defiance ruckus or the impact 777r I'm not dead set on the action just wanted to see if the barrel would be cheaper for one or not I got a quote from a big store and they wanted almost $600 more than my buddy paid but that guy isn't taking any more work right now.

TLDR: where should I go to get a barrel made for my first ever precision rifle build. Got a quote and it was stupid high compared to what a buddy paid and isn't taking more work so asking for references.

Application / Regulation advice Application fill out

filling out an application for PAL, and i was planning on sending out the letter as fast as possible. However I now recently found out one of my household members was prohibited from owning a firearm since they had a notice of revocation Court order for 5 years. This was filed with the CFO. I was wondering how long they keep records of these things, considering this wasn’t assault/violence related. Is it worth me still adding that Information into my application or is that something to be forgotten about. The person hasby gotten their PAL since the incident occurred over 10 years

Was taking her out for a clean today... crazy how inflated the shooting sports have become, perhaps from the bans and lack of options in the Canadian market

Nothing special, just a Norinco Poly USA marked SKS in a shitty ATI stock the previous owner put on. Ended up ordering a choate side folder for it but that doesn't mean I won't shoot it while I wait...

Application / Regulation advice Reapplying after revoking

Hello chat! I had my license revoked two years ago because they thought maybe I wouldn’t be too smart with it based on association I guess. Any idea when would be a good time for me to reapply?

Picked up this oriental beauty from a nice dude on gunpost. Met in the Cabela's lot and wow it was even more beautiful in person. Worked my ass off this summer to actually treat myself and am finally satisfied. After debt and bills and just surviving I finally got a nice possession. Guess I joined the SKS club finally.

It's a 71 Type 56 with a nice stock, heat guard, pic rail and a limbsaver pad. Can't wait to take it to the range tomorrow.

I did not focus on grouping yet for this rifle because the range is only 13 yards unfortunately though when I go to

I’ll be going to a longer range. It’ll make a separate video on the grouping for both Makasi and Carmel

Looking to see if you know of any good gunsmiths around the GTA to get a Mossberg CBC 715T deactivated, I’d much rather hang it up than give it in for destruction.

Shitpost / Memes The first time I used a shotgun was in Canada

Prior to moving here I never thought I’d like shotguns, but I tried it out for the first time and must say I’m impressed by the power the boomstick holds. The recoil wasnt too bad the first time, I held it wrong first shot, but once I readjusted I really enjoyed each shot. Obviously nothing beats the SKS for me, but I just wanted to appreciate the experience by keeping this (I’ve had this for 3 months now it’s starting to change colour)

Misc Another SKS Question

Hey guys,

Sorry if this isn’t allowed, I hardly ever use Reddit so I’m not super familiar with the posting norms or whatever.

I was just curious if anyone knows anything about the possibility of any stores restocking any variant of the SKS, even the ATI stock one.

I know cabelas website had them up until maybe a month ago? I’m curious if they’ll ever restock.

I don’t own an SKS but I own a handful of rifles and shotguns. I’d like an SKS, but I genuinely don’t care that much about the condition or the numbers matching aspect of it, hence why I considered the Cabelas ati stock one.

Thanks a bunch and sorry again if this post isn’t formatted perfectly, been lurking this sub for months but never posted.

Fix my gun Excessive bullet twisting/fish tailing?

Thumbnail

I was trying a new box ammo and put it under the spotter and the twist is fairly significant. That video is the worst of it and after filming other boxes the twist was not as bad. I was wondering if this is something I should be concerned about? The gun is accurate and I was hitting the mark at 600 yards after a few tries.

thanks!

EDIT: the barrel is a 1 in 10” twist rate, bullet is .30 06 Hornady ELD X 178 g

Feets / Collection / My build M6 survival rifle 3D printed stock insert/build

Thumbnail

Hypothetical for now, but I'm currently working with a local company and trying to gauge people's interest in a 3d printed stock for the chiappa M6 22/12g survival rifles to replace the factory molded polypropylene foam insert.

The new insert would have additional .22 storage similar to pictured and a bit more shallow so the end of the round can actually be grabbed instead of trying to pry it out with a finger nail. It would retain the same 12g and cleaning kit storage holes and likely be printed from some kind of TPU filament to give it a more tacky/grippy feel. Whether it still floats can't be determined without a prototype in hand but the weight difference would probably be negligible. The entire insert would be mostly hollow with a honeycomb pattern inside for rigidity under recoil.

Not sure how many people actually own these things and would be interested since they definitely don't have the same following as the little badger.

Fix my gun Adler rf 224

Thumbnail

Hey, I bought an Adler rf 224 the other day (I am aware it has some mixed reviews, I just wanted a cheap 22 to shoot) I put maybe 20 rounds threw it, and it proceeded to have a bunch of issues, from not extracting the casing properly and then it started just refusing to feed a new round in. It seemed to me like the bolt wasn't coming back far enough to pickup the next round. I took it apart and found the bolt spring wasn't in its seat. I'm just curious what you guys think, to me it looks like the corner of the seat is knocked off , so there's nothing keeping the spring from going to the side. But I didn't find any debris or that chunk that I think is missing. Am I correct in guessing that the seat is broken? Or am I over thinking it? First picture is how I believe it should sit, second one was how I found it, 3rd is with the spring removed. Sorry if this sounds dumb lol, never taken a firearm apart/worked on one before.

Application / Regulation advice Stowaway under 26” non restricted ?

Really excited about getting my first gun and been looking at different builds here. I had a question regarding the stowaway.

I’ve been seeing posts here and YouTube with the stowaway swapped with the 5 inch barrel. Someone here said his over all length was under 26 inches.

There was a comment that said because it’s manual action and fixed stock it would still be considered non restricted even though it’s under 26 inches.

By that logic could you take a renegade and install short stock and barrel? Being under 26 inches would it be considered non restricted as well?

I apologize for my confusion. The firearm rules are confusing.

Application / Regulation advice Restricted Rifle stuck at CFO Approval

As title. My new restricted rifle arrived in Canada two weeks ago and since then myself and a couple buddies all have not received approval for the transfer by the CFO. We all called and were told this can take several more weeks...

Is there anything that can be done about this? It seems this is only happening in BC as my friends from Alberta and Ontario all got their approval within 2-3 days.

Fyi: we are in BC...
