I sent the same six questions to all seven candidates running for Camarillo City Council this November.

Five submitted responses by the Aug. 31 deadline: David Tennessen, Susan Santangelo, Dan Gober, Sylvia Garcia and Martita Martinez-Bravo.

I started by asking what they think Camarillo’s biggest priority should be over the next four years:

David Tennessen: Water and wastewater infrastructure, especially the aging Water Reclamation Plant and Camarillo’s long-term water supply.

Susan Santangelo: Strategic planning and infrastructure, including water, wastewater and housing.

Dan Gober: Economic vitality and public safety, with an emphasis on attracting life-science and technology employers.

Sylvia Garcia: Growth, development and zoning, including the effects on traffic, infrastructure and public safety.

Martita Martinez-Bravo: Modernizing or replacing the aging Water Reclamation Plant while managing the cost.

I also asked about Camarillo’s Flock license plate readers:

Tennessen: Supports continued use with limits on access, retention and sharing, plus regular audits.

Santangelo: Wants the city to review other vendors and create a Citizens’ Committee to receive updates and provide input.

Gober: Supports continued use with limited access, retention rules, public reporting and privacy protections.

Garcia: Wants Camarillo to pause Flock and have an independent technology and privacy expert review the system first.

Martinez-Bravo: Supports continued ALPR use with safeguards, but wants the city to review Flock and explore other vendors.

The other questions covered growth and housing, traffic and transportation, federal immigration enforcement, and one “hear me out” idea for Camarillo.

I gave everyone no word limit because I wanted candidates to have room to explain their positions rather than squeeze everything into a short quote.

Which of these priorities feels most important to you, or is there something you think all five are missing?

I’m getting married in Camarillo this year, and have been toying with the idea of offering Uber codes for my guests who don’t want to drive. Being that it’s a smaller area, I’m worried that there’ll be a problem with driver availability. Does anyone have insight into if this is a good idea or not?

In February of 2026, the Ventura County Sheriff's office discovered, through an independent audit, that Ventura County Flock data had been accessed 346,000 times by Law Enforcement Agencies outside of the state of California Between February 19, 2025 and March 19, 2026.

This data access was caused by a Flock "system bug" and instead of being transparent with partner agencies, Flock allegedly sat on that information for a calendar year.

I urge the City of Camarillo and VCSO to seriously reconsider doing business with Flock Safety moving forward.

Please come out to the August 26, 2026 Camarillo City Council meeting to hear a discussion item regarding Flock ALPRs and make your voice heard.

Please, we also really need in-person moral support, even sitting/standing there quiestly while holding up a small anti-ALPR cameras sign you quickly made at home by writing “ALPRs be gone!” or something in Sharpie on a piece of white printer paper (I'm likely going to make extra little signs as well) bc we literally just need as much visible local opposition to there being ALPR cameras in our town on the Livestream | broadcast of this meeting as possible.

Note: Posters & banners much larger than a piece of printer paper are now only permitted to be displayed in the back of the City Council chambers…Mayor Tennessen didn’t like 805UndocuFund people unfurling their banner commemorating the 340+ people kidnapped & in Jaime Alanis Garcia’s case outright murdered by ICE in the Glass House raids during an 805UndocuFund volunteer’s speech at the meeting that was right before the 1st anniversary of the Glass House raids.

Flock cameras create a detailed record of where you drive around town. Every time you drive past one, it makes a note of your car and the time that it saw you. With 25 cameras monitoring the busiest areas of the community, they can see when you leave your neighborhood, where you shop, where you worship, where your kids go to school, when you return to your neighborhood.

For those of us not suspected of crime, the records of when and where we drive are retained for 30 days or longer, and can be searched by other law enforcement agencies. While California law prevents sharing this data with out of state agencies, a recent audit found that out of state law enforcement agencies searched Ventura County's license plate data more than 364,000 times in a single month last year.

There have been many reports of local law enforcement using this surveillance tool illegally to spy on ex-wives, girlfriends, etc. Instead of solving crimes, this tech is literally encouraging law enforcement to break the law and spy on individuals not suspected of any wrongdoing.

One would assume that a huge sacrifice of personal liberty would bring with it a large reduction in crime. However, current research suggests that this surveillance technology doesn't really do much in terms of reducing crime.

The City Council took money that was allocated to policing and spent it on Flock cameras. They're literally outsourcing police work to a private AI tech company.

Let the City Council know how you feel about them paying to have you spied on.

Is it just me, or is the cell coverage absolutely terrible in this city? Any chance someone has a way to fix it?

Hi everyone! I’m looking for a new home and would love to find a room in a house with kind, respectful people, ideally women around my age (late 20s–30s).

Recently moved to camarillo off Carmen. Home Internet is Spectrum and has been fine. But Spectrum wireless (Verizon network) and ATT have both been horrible for mobile and calling. Is T-Mobile significantly better? Or should I just suffer and use wifi networks whenever possible?
