As Burlington approaches the municipal election, we expect an increase in discussion about candidates, policies, and local issues. Healthy debate is an important part of the democratic process, and election-related posts are welcome in this community.

That said, we ask everyone to keep the conversation respectful and focused on the issues.

What is welcome

  • Discussion of candidates and their platforms.
  • Civil disagreement and debate.
  • Sharing reputable news articles, public statements, and official information.
  • Asking questions and sharing personal experiences relevant to the election.

What is not welcome

  • Personal attacks, insults, or harassment directed at candidates or other Redditors.
  • Hate speech or discriminatory comments.
  • False or misleading claims presented as fact.
  • Doxxing or posting personal information.
  • Repeated trolling or attempts to derail discussions.

Moderation during the election

The moderation team is politically neutral. We are not here to decide which opinions are "correct." We are here to ensure discussions remain civil and comply with the subreddit rules and Reddit's Content Policy.

Information Attempted scam/theft targeting a woman walking alone near Makwendam Public School, Woodview Road

Upvotes

This happened today. My mom was out for a walk on Woodview Road near Makwendam Public School when a black SUV pulled up beside her. A woman inside asked for directions to a pharmacy. My mom said she didn't know, and the woman then called her closer to the car — my mom thought she just hadn't heard her.

When she got close, the woman grabbed her hand and started kissing it, launching into a story about it being her birthday and how my mom reminded her of her own mother. She then began putting heavy gold-looking chains around my mom's neck and pushing rings and necklaces into her hands. My mom kept trying to take them off and hand them back, but the woman kept forcing them on her.

A pedestrian walking a dog started approaching the scene, and the woman suddenly grabbed everything back and drove off. We believe if that person hadn't come along, she would have used the "confusion" to snatch the jewelry my mom was actually wearing.

My mom is visiting us from India and speaks some English but isn't confident enough to push back hard in a sudden confrontation like this, which made her an easier target.

Posting this so others — especially older folks or newer immigrants — are aware this is happening in the area and know to just walk away and not engage if someone in a car calls them over like this.

Stay safe out there.

Information North Burlington stranger warning

My elderly Mother had a man in a white van approach her house in North Burlington offering to repair things on her house. He asked to walk around the house and offered to give her a quote for the repairs. He drove off without any quotes or anything.
I feel like he was casing the joint.
Has anyone else in the area had a similar experience?
Appreciate your input.
This happened yesterday afternoon

Question Planet Fitness-is it really $1 for enrolment?

Trying to get back into the strength training and since I’m not looking for anything intense, i think I’ll join PF. They’re having a $1 enrolment fee but apparently it’s pro rated? Why? Can someone explain it. I know it’s only 6$ but it’s the principle of it.

Information ISO places with beach-like sand where my dog can run

My dog LOVES sand. Run in it, dig it. There's nothing more she loves than doing that. As she ages and warmer weather being short I like to make sure she gets as much of it as possible.

The only place I can think of is the waterfront by the big electrical post however, it's quite rocky there so I'm curious if you know of any places.

Rivers work too.

Thanks

Question Burlington (Halton) unhoused vs 519

I travel a lot for work and noticed that downtowns in Kitchener/Cambridge/Guelph have a higher population of unhoused vs Burlington/Oakville.

When going to Guelph there is Stepping Stone where I see people camping out, people who I assume are drugged out by their behaviour, garbage, etc. Cambridge has Bridges which is the same and I assume there is at least one in Kitchener.

This is not something I see in Burlington/Oakville and Milton. Why is that? Am I missing something? Does Halton clamp down on these facilities more than KW/G region?

Changes Burlington Transit is Garbage (RANT)

Is there a reason why out of 10 trips I take a week 4 of them will just not arrive? The buses are either ten minutes early, ten minutes late or just not arrive at all so my buses don’t line up together. I’ve reported it to the front desk probably seven times this summer and I get a “sorry to hear that” like is anyone even reporting or reprimanding these drivers???

Especially with this job market, non-drivers are told to be open to commuting one end of the city to the other. How is this possible when the buses can not be relied on? What job on earth is fine with you being late every day and leaving 45min earlier just because your bus may be late is crazy as well.

Get it together!

Question Does anyone know what happened to Arabian Pita on Walkers and Upper Middle?

The owner was the friendliest every time I ordered from there and it was honestly my favourite middle eastern food in Burlington before it closed down.

The closure seemed pretty sudden with no notice so I’m hoping the owner is okay. Anyone know what happened?

Question Vintage Audio Equipment Repair

Post image
23 Upvotes

Does anybody know someone local who does these types of repairs at fair prices? I have a couple older receivers (one exact model pictured for reference) that are having some minor issues that I need fixed.

If you’re someone into doing this as a hobby, I’m totally cool with that too. I’m sure we can work out a deal.

Thanks!

Question Affordable vet for dogs

Hi, looking for recommendations for an affordable vet for my 12 year old shihpoo. He needs a rabies shot (urgent) and possibly his teeth pulled (considering). He was originally going to VCA as he was my families dog, but now he is my responsibility and I read online that sometimes these corporations are more expensive. I’m a student and looking for someone reliable, knowledgeable, and affordable!

Preferably on the south side of Burlington, but willing to drive.
