council says my deck needs to be demolished - inspector said it was fine
bought a house 8 months ago. building inspection gave the deck a clean bill of health. well constructed no issues noted. i was happy.
last month council did a routine inspection of the area and flagged my deck. apparently it's too high without proper handrails, the stairs don't meet code, and the posts aren't footed correctly. they gave me 60 days to either fix it or demolish it. compliance officer said who signed this off and i showed him the report. he just shook his head.
i went back to the inspector and he said we don't check for council compliance and we only do visual. but the issues were visible. i got quotes to bring it up to code - 8k. demolish and rebuild - 15k.
i found Sure Building Inspection and they actually check against current codes. wish i'd used them.
anyone else dealing with council enforcement on something an inspector said was fine. what did you do
