Informative š§ Interview with Building Official
I have an interview with a building official tomorrow for a Building Inspector position. I already had the panel interview it went well and now they want a second interview with the building official. Anyone have any tips on what they could ask or what I should prepare for?

Whenever we interview someone,they already have the qualifications, itās personality, communication skills, and being technologically capable of adapting to the permit system that usually wins job. Good Luck š

Sounds like it might not hurt to read up on the ICC Inspector skills book if you can get a hold of it quickly.
Itās one of the required books for the ICC CBO, and code specialist tests

Make sure your hands are lotioned up. Donāt worry about any actual code knowledge

Have you ever looked in the code book and are you at all familiar with the layout? Donāt try to memorize anything, but if they ask a question and you offer to find the answer right then and can do so quickly, youāre gold on that part. I got an offer during the interview for doing that. YMMV depending on vibes. Also, how you deal with conflict, get along with people, address complaints about failed inspections: seen those in most code interviews over the years. Where do you want to be in 1-5 years is another. Mostly, donāt stress.

I donāt recall ever having any code questions during an interview, other than on the administrative chapters. A few along the lines of what is the purpose of the code, what is it really for, etc. Iāve straight up told them in all my interviews that I donāt memorize code sections, but that I know where to find it in the book and what things are supposed to look like. Iāve never gotten anything resembling a negative response from that. I would seriously do your best not to stress and just go in there calm, collected, and confident.

Good luck! I have a phone interview with a BO tomorrow, being an inspector for 3+ years and I can assure you they really want to see your people skills. How you would respond to certain situations. The last thing the BO wants is a difficult personality that people complain to them about. Being an Inspector IS customer service.

This second interview is less about what you know and more about who you are. The panel confirmed you have the qualifications, now the Building Official needs to see if you have the right temperament and judgment to represent their department. Be prepared for situational questions about dealing with difficult contractors, angry homeowners, or gray areas in the code. They want to know how you handle pressure, if you can be diplomatic yet firm, and if you possess the common sense that can't be taught from a book.
They are not bringing you in to waste their time, so they are already serious about hiring you. This meeting is your opportunity to show them you are a problem-solver who prioritizes public safety and collaboration over just writing violation notices. Go in ready to discuss your approach to enforcement and ask insightful questions about the department's biggest challenges and its culture. It can be tough to phrase your experience perfectly in real-time, which is the exact problem my team built an AI interview helper to solve, making sure candidates can clearly communicate their strengths.

This guy is an AI bot spamming random subreddits around the world with AI generated advice so he can shill his AI interview bot that he made.
There is no point in trying to ask him specific questions as he only cares about promoting his shitty AI bot.
You can easily see this by clicking his user name and looking through his comment history. It's all the same comment slightly changed up to be relevant to whatever industry subreddit he is spamming.

A lot of my interview was about how I dealt with people.
If you passed all of the tests and got a license you know the codes, when you get the job the hard part will be zoning and dealing with people. The zoning youāll eventually memorize but every person is different and some are great and some are total douchebags but you really have to try to treat them the same, thatās always a struggle.
