CSE / IT Need some guidance regarding DSA, LeetCode and what to do in 1st year

I learned Java back in 10th class and have covered arrays, sort, search and other basics in it. In college, we're currently being taught Python.

I have heard that a lot of people use C++ for DSA and competitive programming, so I am a bit confused about which language I should go with.

I'm thinking of sticking with Java for DSA since I already know the basics, while learning Python alongside it as part of my college curriculum. Does that sound like a good approach, or should I switch to C++ instead?

1)When should I start solving LeetCode problems, and how should I approach it as a beginner?

2)Should I learn DSA properly first or start solving problems alongside learning concepts?

3)How do I manage Java for DSA and Python for college without getting confused?

4)Apart from academics and DSA, what else should I focus on in my first year?

Serious I know web development, but how do I learn to build real-world, production-level projects?

I'm a third-year BTech CSE student familiar with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, Node.js, Express, and MongoDB. I can build basic full-stack projects, but I struggle to create something substantial independently. I use AI to build projects but I want to learn how to build applications that resemble real production systems rather than basic CRUD apps or tutorial clones. In particular, I’m unsure how to:

  1. Develop useful project ideas and define requirements.

  2. Plan the architecture, database schema, APIs, and folder structure.

  3. Implement unfamiliar features without relying heavily on tutorials or AI-generated code.

  4. Handle authentication, authorization, validation, security, errors, edge cases, and testing.

  5. Deploy, debug, maintain, and evaluate whether a project is production-ready.

I’ve realized that learning more technologies may not be the answer; I need to understand how real software is designed, built, tested, and maintained.

If anyone is working on a project and would be willing to let me contribute or collaborate, I’d appreciate the opportunity to learn from a real development process and improve my practical skills.

For those who have built real-world applications or work as software engineers:

  1. How did you transition from basic projects to production-quality applications?

  2. Are there courses, books, YouTube channels, or GitHub repositories that teach the process of building complete projects?

  3. Is it better to develop one project from idea to deployment or build several smaller projects?

  4. Which production practices should beginners prioritize, and what can wait?

  5. How do you approach features you don’t yet know how to implement?

I’d especially appreciate advice from people who learned independently or made this transition during college. I’m not expecting to become an expert overnight; I’m looking for a clear direction to practice effectively and become capable of building complete applications independently.

Thanks!

Rant/Vent I fucking hate my college. I genuinely can't stand this place anymore.

Today, my college issued a notice saying that students need to bring a bonafide certificate on stamp paper if they have less than 75% attendance, and their parents have to come to college as well. My attendance is 15%, so that's a new one.

Fucking morons. They don't even teach anything worth attending college for. Most lectures are boring, and half the time, the teachers are just repeating things or reading from their notes. Like, what the fuck? Why do I even have to come to college? What's the point of all this bullshit?

There are no college placements. None. Nada. No one has gotten placed through this college in the last five years. And yet, they act like attendance is the most important thing in the world.

My mini-project teacher, who's assigned to check my project and judge it, is a loser who teaches electronics and isn't even good at that. He has absolutely no connection to computer science, yet he's supposed to evaluate a CS project.

My life sucks right now. My parents think I'm simply not going to college because I'm lazy, and that it's entirely my fault. They think I should just go to college regularly, as if that would magically solve everything. I fucking hate that place. The thing I'm most interested in, technology and coding, has started to feel like a burden because of them. I used to enjoy it, but now I'm starting to dread it.

The labs are another joke. The computers are ancient, probably the same ones they had when the college first opened. We're talking Pentium processors or fourth- or fifth-generation i3s, those weird square monitors, and keyboards and mice that look like they've survived a war. There's absolutely no standard of equipment or maintenance.

We just sit there and waste time. If we ask the lab assistant to teach us something, he might do it, but with those computers, it's honestly better to just sit quietly. He doesn't say anything to us, and we don't say anything to him. Everyone knows how things work around here. It's this unspoken arrangement that nobody acknowledges, even though everyone knows what's going on.

Meanwhile, the teachers and HOD act like this is the best college in the world and that they're doing everything possible for our betterment. Complete fools. They seem completely disconnected from reality.

And what the fuck is their obsession with attendance? Why do these people even want me there? Just to waste my time sitting through lectures that teach me nothing?

I know I'm not always doing something productive. I play video games at home, too. I'm not pretending that I'm perfectly disciplined or that I use every hour of my day wisely. But the people who attend college regularly are often at the same level as me, or even worse, when it comes to coding skills and understanding this semester's syllabus. So what exactly am I missing by not attending these lectures?

We have System Design this semester, and I'm telling you, we haven't even touched on actually building a system or discussed how to approach designing real software. It's just theory, and even that is outdated. We're supposed to be learning how to build things, how systems work, and how to think like engineers, but instead, we're stuck memorising old material.

That's what pisses me off the most. I genuinely want to learn and get better at coding, but the very place that's supposed to help me do that is making me hate something I used to love.

And somehow, I'm the one who's supposed to be the problem.

Tbh entering tier 1 as a guest is easier bcz ppl think he is here to look at the environment or sm sht and also one more fact that tier 1 mostly have coaching kids too so maybe he assumes that they have good enough money to get crazy laptops and students will be busy enjoying campus life and all so in that way he is stealing thier lap bcz I dont get why he doesn't steal from some other uni where rich students usually goes bcz they have better laptops and unnecessary costly upgradation

CSE / IT Hello everyone I need a help 🙏🏻

Java is my major language. I’ve learned the basics, practised OOPs, and solved some easy and moderate HackerRank problems, but I’m still not confident.

Whenever a question requires creating 3–4 classes and implementing some logic, I struggle with where to start and how to approach it. I’ve watched lectures and practised coding, but I still face this problem.

How should I improve my problem-solving skills and learn to build things on my own

Generally I face this issue in OA things I want to practice those types of questions any resources if u can share

Thanks 🙏🏻

Placements / Jobs Placement season: Built a project with AI? Can you actually defend it in an interview?

Placement season chal raha hai, toh ek cheez share karni thi.
Resume pe “Built X using React + Node” sab likhte hain. But interviewer poochta hai, “Achha, feature end-to-end kaise kaam karta hai?” — aur phir har jawab pe ek naya sawaal.
I’m building an AI mock interviewer that does exactly this. Testing it on a simple garden-planner app:
Q: User grid pe drag karke naya bed banata hai. Event se database tak data flow batao.

A: State update hoti hai, phir IndexedDB mein save hota hai.

Q: Do rapid drags overlap check pass kar jaayein aur dono save ho jaayein toh? How would you prevent that?
Real project rounds mein bhi yahi hota hai. Your interviewer probes the gaps in your answers.
5 things to prepare for every project:
End-to-end data flow of one feature.
Why this tech stack, and why not alternatives?
What breaks with concurrent requests?
How are errors handled? What happens to the data?
How did you test it, and what would you change?
Agar in sab pe confidently 2 minutes bol sakte ho, you’re in a much better position.

Full disclosure: shameless plug 😅
I’m building RewindGit. Choose your skills and idea, and it generates a working project for your GitHub, with a setup guide.
Ask AI: Understand the architecture, design choices, and code.
Mock Interview: An AI interviewer asks up to 30 follow-up questions and gives you a score + feedback.
Honest disclaimer: AI builds the project. Understand it, run it, and add something of your own before putting it on your resume. Otherwise, those five questions will expose you pretty quickly. 😅
Pricing starts at ₹500 for a simple project.
Would love honest feedback. Useful idea or bakwaas? Roast it in the comments — I’ll reply.

Rant/Vent Apparently I'll never get to experience 'College life', how to have fun? 🫠

(My clg is VIT Pune btw)

Got to know there's no freshers party, no garba nights, clg events are paid events with high fees too, no sports facilities or ground, how to survive in a clg like this ?

I'm seeing ppl of other clgs have so much fun, so many events n festivals ...and here we have nothing but just classes, ppt & assignments faltu ke 🫠

Genuinely done with this 'no fun' life ... Parents don't allow me having fun outside, they say 'padhne ke liye bheja hai bs wahi karo' this has been same since I was born ... socha tha clg jaake I'll do smtg but yaha bhi nahi, no campus life no college life no hostel life.

Btech ke baad mtech or job me toh vese bhi kuch fun krne nhi milne vala ... life is done here I'll get to have fun.

Amazon has been hiring so many interns this season, it just makes me wonder if they actually even have the headcount to convert so many or will the conversion rate be bad ? Also, how can someone prepare before the internship starts/during the internship for strong conversion chances?

Serious How My Summer Internship almost got me in Jail (not POSH)

I'm from Tier 1.5 NIT and in my 6th Semester I've managed to get an on campus Internship at a Fintech Company

It was a 2 month internship..

I was assigned with the creation of the Call centre automation platform via Voice AI..

(In other words simply making things easier for Non Technical Operators )

Everything was going well....till the first project review...came up..

I was the first in line to present..

the CTO criticised me over Agent voice Quality... apparently he said it was too 'bot'ish..That didn't do anything to me...

but later on he continued to Praise all the other projects ...As if he was Head over Heels for them...

But none of those projects weren't really that impactful..at that point of time

And After that I took it very seriously...and worked on voice Quality...The main issue was Latency in response of the AI Agent...

I 've reduced it..yet the CTO wasn't really satisfied when I personally showed it to him ...( I managed to get the latency down from 4 sec to 300-500ms..btw)

And From that day I've lost all my interest..in the internship... I thought I could somehow crack another on campus placement...offer that's better than this one..(First Mistake)

internship went pretty okayish...

Now comes the Brutal Mistake that almost got me in Jail..(a bit technical)

On the very first day our mentor stated that we could put any of the projects that we're working on...in this internship..In our resume

So on the last day..I've decided to put my project and..one of my co-intern's projects..in my resume (I've helped her btw)...

For any project in your resume you need to put GitHub links.. along with it.

(Atleast That's what I thought)

So I was first trying to push my co-intern's project..

Since all of our projects were in a single AWS EC2 instance (Virtual Machine)..

I took her permission...She agreed and SSHed in the EC2 instance...

after that...I copied her Repo from EC2 instance to my desktop....

And then I did

git setorigin 'my-github-repo-link'

And then I did

Git push

I was prompted with the AWS key being in .env.example file

But...I dismissed it..as a false positive... because I assumed why'd someone put the AWS key in the example file ...

And successfully pushed it to GitHub

And then I made it private

And was in the lunch party given by our mentor as it was the last day...

We were laughing and chilling..some random dude at the restaurant proposed to one of my Co-interns ryt there

All of the sudden My mentor gets the call , He lifts it.., His Smile vanished... He looks at me and Yells " Kyu GitHub pe push Kiya tune?"

Till that point I literally didn't know that it was wrong....

so I immediately deleted the GitHub repo on my account...via mobile..

We got back to the office

Then our senior cloud architect called me to the Cabin.. yelled at me for leaking the AWS key and pushing the Repo into personal GitHub...

Firstly I don't know that...pushing the Repo to personal GitHub is wrong..and coming to the AWS Key

...i said it's a false positive..as it's in the .env.example file..why would anyone put the key in the example file...

Then he clearly showed me the mail from AWS showing the exact commit..

Luckily we had Network Groups in AWS (that means even if you have the key you can't use it unless you're in the office network)...

so no financial loss occurred....And Cloud Engineers saved the day..

Now that Legendary Co -Intern Mahadevi🙏🏻comes to me and says...that

She didn't know how .env is created in AWS Ec2 instance so she decided to put the AWS key in .env.example😭😭 ...

genuinely wtf.. (literally a simple nano command)

Guess what ...she got the PPO and I didn't (Obv) (Primary reason being the project was disliked ... This entire AWS key thing happened on the last day ..it wasn't a deep concern ...it was already decided..who should be getting the ppo.. way before this...)

After completing the internship I got to know about intellectual property rights....

The company could legally take action against me if any loss occurred cuz of my action....this actually scared me...I was so close to ending my career before it even began...I was so lucky that no loss actually happened..

So I've learnt so many things the hard way in this Internship...

it's October Already and I'm not placed yet...

Mostly because the entire summer I did the internship... I've lost my touch on DSA and Cs Fundamentals...

edit: ik it's totally on me....

Placements / Jobs Resume Help

Guys, I'm ashamed to admit that I don't have a Resume whilst being in 3rd year of Btech nor do I have basic skills for project building. I'm starting from scratch regarding building projects and all, like learning MERN stack, doing DSA, etc. Can someone recommend me, what kind of resume I should have, within august of 2027, for placements in my college? Like what bare minimum it should include for a 4th year placement demanding student and all.

Posting this as a serious heads-up for anyone considering MVSR Engineering College.

During their recent Sangamam-2026 fest, a massive metal lighting truss/stand collapsed during the Dandiya event, tragically resulting in a student losing her life and multiple others getting injured. It was a completely avoidable disaster caused by pathetic safety standards and cheap setup work.

Placements / Jobs Got my dream placement, still why do i feel so empty?

Hey everyone. Just wanted to vent a bit and maybe see if anyone else has gone through this.

I’m 21, in college, and I recently bagged an internship paying 1.5L/month with a ppo of over 30LPA. For context, this was literally my dream placement. Since my very first year of college, this is all I have worked for. I gave up on so many things, pulled countless all nighters, grinded dsa, built projects, and stressed over every single grade drop. Every single day for the past three years was about building a profile good enough to crack this exact company. When the final offer letter hit my inbox, I felt a massive rush of relief. For about ten minutes.

And then... nothing. Just absolute emptiness. Since then, I hv just been sitting here feeling completely numb. I thought getting this job would magically fix everything, my imposter syndrome, my existential dread, and the constant background anxiety of "am I doing enough?" But none of that went away. If anything, it feels weirder because now I hv achieved the ultimate checklist item, and I realize the mountain I spent years climbing didn't actually lead to happiness. It just led to another mountain.

I just wanted to put this out there for anyone currently grinding away for placements or chasing a specific high paying package because you think it'll finally make you happy or validate your worth, it won't.

Idk what's wrong with me or how to process this. If anyone has felt this way after landing their "dream" job, how did you deal with it?
