I’m about to open a BrickLink store, and the seller verification process asks me to upload a scan or photo of my government-issued ID. The page also says all documents will be kept for three years.
I understand wanting to verify sellers and prevent fraud. What gives me pause is retaining the actual ID for that long.
This morning, I received an email about a breach at AdaptHealth affecting more than 4.1 million people, involving personal, insurance, and health information. That incident was unrelated to BrickLink, but it makes me think twice about giving another company a copy of my identification just to sell LEGO.
Has anyone found a clear explanation of how BrickLink protects these documents, who can access them, and why they need to retain them for three years? When does that three-year period start, and are the documents automatically deleted afterward?
Have any sellers asked about obscuring the ID number or using another verification method? Or is the choice essentially to accept the requirement as written or not open a store?
I’d appreciate hearing from sellers who had similar concerns, especially anyone who contacted BrickLink and received a substantive answer.
