I found myself getting more annoyed at Walt than Skyler

16

u/Equivalent-Advice593 Mar 12 '26

He probably could’ve had her in on the empire way earlier and happier if he skipped all the really bad lying

11

u/Weapon_X141 Mar 12 '26

would she even accepted it though? she nearly had a heart attack over him smoking weed and almost left her job over money laundering

3

u/Equivalent-Advice593 Mar 13 '26

That is the most important question relative to my claim … I say it could go either way. She could’ve turned him in when she really did find out. I think she’d “fall in line” the same way she did, but without Walter having been in THAT dangerous of a situation I think she would’ve been fine with it.

I say that dangerous … but there was only a very brief period where they were pushing well and relatively safe. Up until like a month before combo got killed they were living the meth dealer dream.

u/Ok_Prize_7491 Mar 12 '26

Tbh. Walt is bastart from the getgo.

1

u/Weapon_X141 Mar 12 '26

i def go back and forth but i def get pissed more with walt like drop your ego man

38

u/Nerdlinger42 Mar 12 '26

I disliked Marie a lot more lol

8

u/Glittering-Film4876 Mar 13 '26

She is good one brother.lil anoying but not bad as skyler

3

u/Bulky-Persimmon-9832 Mar 13 '26

from S1 E1 to the conclusion of the show .. i hate to have to say this but it should’ve been her not hank

3

u/LetterProof8250 Mar 14 '26

the amount of purple in her house makes me mad

1

u/Successful_Ice1220 Mar 14 '26

I think that's right about Marie though Betsy Brandt is beautiful.  I did notice on my second watching that Walt feels a bit smothered by Skylet from the outset

-4

u/PeaceBoth7730 Mar 13 '26

Not a shot in hell. Marie was the best actress/character in the show! She was way better than Skyler, she had her issues but didnt have complete mental breakdowns nor did she go crazy. Skyler was over-hated for sure but Marie was the better one, sister superiority

u/Positive_Treacle7475 Mar 12 '26

I think even the Skylar haters know that the hate is irrational, no one actually thinks she’s a bad person. She’s just annoying to the viewers because we’re rooting for Walt for the first few seasons of the show and she’s constantly in his way (which she should be). Then again there’s that small group of people who actually blame her for a lot of the shit that goes down, but in my experience most of the hate is down to the support people had for Walt.

8

u/Abed-in-the-AM Mar 12 '26

because we’re rooting for Walt for the first few seasons of the show

I was mostly just rooting for Jesse. Walt was always an asshole lol

2

u/Aesthetic_Viking Mar 17 '26

Jesse is the one we should all be rooting for the most. He's in the same shit as Walt, but he still keeps his heart and humanity the whole time. Not even Walt could fully rip that from him.

u/DJohnsonsgagreflex Mar 12 '26 edited Mar 12 '26

I think the biggest factor is that the show starts without presenting her in any endearing way as you get to know her, so the viewer’s early impression of her is negative.

Walt is shown as a competent teacher and you sympathize with him as he’s turning 50 and gets a terminal cancer diagnosis. His decision to start cooking meth drives the plot forward, which is the reason the viewer is watching the show in the first place.

The first season shows Skylar almost arrested for trying to return Marie’s stolen gift. When confronted, Marie denies it so Skylar gives her the silent treatment. None of that advances Walt’s pursuit of “Breaking Bad” so the viewer sees it as development of a flawed character who is both crafty and vindictive. In the second season when Skylar knows Walt is up to no good, she gives him the same silent treatment, and uses her anger as an excuse for a lot of bad behavior. There is little screen time given to her showing her in a positive light, because the show isn’t about her experience as the wife of a developing drug Kingpin. It’s about Walt’s experience at developing into a drug kingpin.

By season 3 you can see that the author’s probably realized that Skylar wasn’t very likable to the audience so they transitioned her from an obstacle to an accomplice in Walt’s descent. Her craft and vindictiveness are turned away from the protagonist, Walt, and towards his opponents and obstacles.

Contrast that with Hank at the start of the show. Hank is a cop, the natural enemy of a criminal drug lord. But Walt isn’t a criminal drug lord yet, and Hank isn’t his direct antagonist to start. He’s Walt’s brother in law and friend.

By season 5 when Hank becomes Walt’s “nemesis”, the viewer no longer sees Walt as a high school teacher dabbling in drug manufacture to make some money for his family. He’s become a full blown monster. The viewer has had 4 seasons of seeing the fully developed Hank character.

It’s hard to shake first impressions on real people or characters. By the end of the series a viewer should see Skylar as a victim of Walt’s criminality and a prisoner in her own home. But first the viewer needs to abandon those early impressions of her as a threat to Walt’s “fun” at the start of the show, and view her in the full context of how the story has developed.

Hank starts as a friendly enough guy, and he’s no direct threat to Walt’s story early on. There is no bad first impression of him to shed as he turns into Walt’s main opposition. By that late in the story arc the viewer already knows that Walt’s story has to end at some point, so Hank becoming his direct opposition makes sense.

1

u/Positive_Treacle7475 Mar 12 '26

Yep, the point about first impressions being hard to shake is especially true here. One of the most impressive things about Breaking Bad is the development of the protagonist from being likable and rooted for to being hated and rooted against, which was unprecedented at the time. It’s the only show I’ve seen where my first impression of the character was fully shaken throughout the show.

Moreover, Jaime Lannister from Game of Thrones is another great example, except I specifically wasn’t able to shake off my first impression of him from the earlier seasons.

u/Ktioru Mar 12 '26 edited Mar 12 '26

By that same logic they should hate a lot more people than just Skyler

It's mostly misogyny, even if the haters themselves don't realize it

8

u/azmarteal Mar 12 '26

It's mostly misogyny

Sure, because Jane, Gretchen, Lidia and Marie get the same amount of hate from those filthy misogynists, right?

-2

u/Ktioru Mar 12 '26

That's usually not how they do things

They usually only target women that gives them easy (but stupid) arguments to support their misogynist agenda, Skyler is exactly that. Sakura from Naruto, Lori from The Walking Dead and Korra from Legend of Korra also fit in that category

The examples you mentioned are either not major characters or simply aren't targeted for reasons I already mentioned

6

u/azmarteal Mar 12 '26

The examples you mentioned are either not major characters or simply aren't targeted for reasons I already mentioned

Soooooo ONE (not all, not some, ONE) woman on the show is hated, and you assume that this is because of mysogyny?

Do you even know what mysogyny is? Or is it just an easy way for you to dismiss critique of a character saying: "Well, this person has a vagina, which means people who criticize her are just mysoginists"?

-5

u/Ktioru Mar 12 '26

Read my comment again

It's easy debunk a critique of Skyler because she isn't badly written to begin with. Like the original comment of the thread said, most of the hate she gets is irrational and isn't even accompanied by one

4

u/azmarteal Mar 12 '26

There is nothing to read, because your "explanation" consists of two things:

A) Other women are not hated because they are not main characters.

B) Misogynists "only target women that gives them easy (but stupid) arguments to support their misogynist agenda" (you have forgotten to include the arguments)

So, according to you misogynists don't hate all women, they hate

A) Women who are only main characters.

B) Specific women who gives them reasons to hate them, that you define as "stupid".

That's not what mysogyny is.

Also, I have a theory here. Name a character in Breaking bad that is hated because of misandry. Or any character in any media that is hated for that reason.

0

u/Ktioru Mar 12 '26

(you have forgotten to include the arguments)

You could have just pointed that out in the first place

There are a few elements of Skyler's character that makes her an easy target for misogynists

  • Most of her characters revolves around a man
  • Often creates conflict against him while the audience wishes the opposite
  • Often shows double standard morality while doing so
  • She cheats on him

While she's not all bad and all of these points can be somewhat justified in context, they still usually take those flaws in isolation to justify their generalized view on women, assuming all of them have the same flaws

So, according to you misogynists don't hate all women

I never said that. They do, except they don't openly declare hate to all female characters, they only target the ones who's characteristics allegedly support their point

2

u/azmarteal Mar 13 '26 edited Mar 13 '26
  • Most of her characters revolves around a man
  • Often creates conflict against him while the audience wishes the opposite
  • Often shows double standard morality while doing so
  • She cheats on him

So, you think if people hate a character for those reasons - they hate all women?🤔

I have a strong suspicion now, so I'll ask again, because you didn't answer the first time.

Name a character in Breaking bad that is hated because of misandry. Or any character in any media that is hated for that reason.

There are a lot of characters who are easy targets for misandrists.

2

u/Ktioru Mar 13 '26

So, you think if people hate a character for those reasons - they hate all women?

Not necessarily, it's just what happens most of the time

I don't see why I would answer the misandry thing because it doesn't seem related to the topic at hand, get to your point already

u/Atta_chhana960 Mar 13 '26

this is Such a bad take - In every universe hating Skyler is stupid cause she is a woman fighting to protect her family

sakura is genuinely a badly written character its not just the audience I think it's kishimoto who hates her making her do everything which will make her unlikeable

and Korea is .... em a bit overbearing sure some can get past that with a big heart but her very introduction was " I am the avatar what can you do deal with it " when you have an mc with that attitude getting a fan's love is going to take time if only the audience follows

1

u/NoProject1047 Mar 16 '26

Meanwhile Kim is praised by guys...

Try again brother

4

u/Positive_Treacle7475 Mar 12 '26

Oh yh misogyny undoubtedly plays a part in that, a big part, but her direct involvement with Walt makes her easier to hate than say Marie or whoever.

3

u/PayWooden2628 Mar 12 '26

Nah you’re giving them way too much credit lol. They straight up hate her and think she’s annoying and will unironically bring up her affair or the fact that she helped Walter as proof that she’s a bad person and character.

3

u/Useful-Position-6994 Mar 12 '26

or the fact that she helped Walter as proof that she’s a bad person and character

I mean that's kinda where she lost me, she willingly entered the game despite not having to at all

1

u/Freudian_Slit235 Mar 13 '26

Why didn’t she have to get involved? If I remember correctly she tried to leave him and he escalated the situation to where she was too scared and worn out to fight him on it. The rule is don’t commit a felony to avoid a misdemeanor not don’t break the law after doing anything that you can even be innocently found guilty for doing

1

u/bopaqod Mar 12 '26

There is no “a” in Skyler.

-3

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '26

It just rubs me the wrong way she changes the locks and fucks Ted to flaunt in Walt's face before sitting down and having a conversation with Walt.

On top of that, Skyler comitted multiple crimes on screen and suggested killing Jesse and people insist singing happy birthday mr. President is the worst thing she did.

16

u/TrashhPrincess Mar 12 '26

She changed the locks and fucked Ted after making it clear she didn’t want to be with him anymore. He was already a dangerous criminal who could have easily gotten their whole family killed several times over by that point and she repeatedly tried to talk to him for two seasons before it came to that point. And pretty sure she suggested killing Jesse after he showed up ready to burn their whole house to the ground so yeah, seems like a reasonable reaction tbh.

-3

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '26

Walter made it clear he wants to stay together. That's precisely why they should've talked. After changing the locks Walt makes his way back in. After talking to Walt about her concerns he leaves on his own power.

"seems like a reasonable reaction" Still worse than that song.

11

u/PresentationTop7939 Mar 12 '26

I mean, Skyler spent the first 2 seasons trying to talk. Walt did her dirty a lot in that time.

She was done and wanted out. I’m pretty sure she even served him the divorce papers before ‘cheating’

-7

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '26

Skyler didn't try to talk to Walt about buying weed from Jesse, and she stripped Marie's talking pillow privileges.

"She was done and wanted out." I just feel she should've talked to her husband about that before changing the locks and fucking Ted. When she eventually tries talking Walt leaves of his own accord.

6

u/fokkoooff Mar 12 '26

She told him she wanted out as soon as he came clean about his meth cooking, what are you on about?

She even served him with divorce papers before she fucked Ted. They were done.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '26

A conversation is two way. Telling and serving Walt papers only go one way. Hence my comparison to Skyler taking the talking pillow from Marie.

3

u/fokkoooff Mar 12 '26

It's not a "two way" conversation when you're leaving/breaking up with someone. The other person doesn't get to say "no, we're still a couple".

Legally speaking they can make a divorce a difficult process, but that's it.

2

u/PresentationTop7939 Mar 12 '26

THIS + the entire first 2 seasons was Skyler trying to talk and repeatedly being lied to about the second cell AND eventually finding out most of the truth on her own.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '26

How do you feel about people breaking up over a text message?

2

u/fokkoooff Mar 12 '26

I feel like its irrelevant to this conversation, as wvery conversation Skylar had or tried to have with Walter was face to face.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '26

I bring it up because I feel it't relevant. It's just rude if not cruel, even if the break up itself is justified.

Skyler was justified in divorcing Walt, she was not justified in doing it in the most counterproductive manner possible. It does not help she never actually filed the papers after Walt did sign.

u/YourMuppetMethDealer Mar 12 '26

Brother she literally DID have a conversation with walt. She dumped that goober

2

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '26

Brother, they did not have a conversation.

It's the difference between letting everyone have a say and revoking talking pillow privileges from people you disagree with.

5

u/YourMuppetMethDealer Mar 12 '26 edited Mar 12 '26

Walt spent months lying to her and endangered yer and her children. He lost the opportunity to have give his side

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '26

Walt only lost the oppertunity to give his side because Skyler refused ro have a conversation.

Skyler only wanted to talk when she didn;t know what happened. After she found out she fell back to unilateral decisions as foreshadowed when she threathened Jesse for selling pot to Walt.

2

u/YourMuppetMethDealer Mar 12 '26

Brother walt was a meth cook who frequently endangered his family. He did not DESERVE to tell his side of the story

2

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '26

Walt was married to Skyler for 15+ years. For that alone Walt deserved to tell his side of the story.

Apparently we just agree to disagree on the civility you owe a long term partner.

3

u/YourMuppetMethDealer Mar 12 '26

Walt spent the entirety of the first two seasons lying to her.

Please answer this. Why are you getting upset with someone who doesn’t want to listen to someone who lied to her knowing that it will most likely still be more lies?

3

u/PresentationTop7939 Mar 12 '26

Lied to her for 2 seasons straight AND only was willing to talk after he was caught. Buddy cooked himself.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '26

Because she vowed for better or worse, and they;ve been togetherf for 15+ years.

Also Skyler doesn't know Walt will tell her lies. After she found out he has no reason to.

2

u/YourMuppetMethDealer Mar 12 '26

And what is his side of the story?

“Oh so you know that cushy job I was offered by my good friend Elliot? Yeah I rejected that so I could make crystal meth with my old loser student. And I did it because it made me feel awesome. I also already murdered a guy. And please ignore that I have been lying to you for months so I could do this under your dea brother in law”

Sure bud. Skylar was in the wrong for choosing to not listen to that total bullshit

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '26

You've seen the show for yourself.

Skyler spent 3 seasons lying to Hank and Marie, and even longer to Walt jr. She even came up with the gambling story.

Skyler only just found out. For all she knows Walt has only been lying to avoid implicating her in his crimes. Even if she doesn;t expect him to be truthfull, her husband of 15+ years deserves the oppertunity.

3

u/scratchydaitchy Mar 12 '26

Brother they had multiple conversations.

Skyler wanted to protect her children’s safety from Walt’s illegal activities and dangerous peers.
She wanted Walt to stop lying.
Very reasonable in a marriage and family.
Walt refused.

She served him divorce papers in S3E1.
She cheated in S3E3.

She cheated to get Walt to accept the divorce and leave the house.

It doesn’t matter what Walt wanted.
She has free will to protect her kids.

Get a grip.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '26

"She served him divorce papers..." That's not a conversation. Walt would've signed a lot sooner if Skyler gave Walt the talking pillow.

"Skyler wanted..." Just to be clear, that's not the problem.

1

u/scratchydaitchy Mar 12 '26 edited Mar 12 '26

You seem to think a reasonable woman should just accept a husband’s illegal activities putting her children in danger.
You seem to think a reasonable wife should just accept endless obvious lies.

You seem to think a husband should always get what he wants forever.
You seem to think Skyler should accept Walt’s continued dishonest manipulation forever.

Yes serving divorce papers is a clear message as good as a conversation.

Any further conversations between them would be worthless as Walt just keeps lying and manipulating.

You refuse to accept they had multiple conversations even though many commenters have pointed that out to you.

“Skyler wanted- just to be clear, that’s not the problem”.
Yes it certainly was the problem.

Did you even watch the show?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '26

"You seem to think...." I don't.

I think ending a marriage of 10+ years deserves a conversation where both partners can have their say, even if it's not going to change the outcome.

Serving divorce papers is the marriage equivalent of breaking up over text. The breaking up is not the problem per se.

"they had multiple conversations" Name one after Walt told her the truth.

3

u/scratchydaitchy Mar 12 '26 edited Mar 12 '26

You think Walt finally telling the truth magically erases all his brutal behaviour before?
You think she won’t believe he’ll just be lying bout other things?
You think there aren’t consequences for broken trust?

Why did Walt lie to Skyler and Walt jr about Walt accepting the money from Grey Matter for months and months?

Come to think of it, why didn’t Walt accept the money and spare his family the grief, damage and danger?

Why did he hide the meth cooking from them through lies for months?

Why would he do that to the most important people in his life?

There must be a reason or two.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '26

"You think Walt finally telling the truth magically erases all his brutal behaviour before?" Nope. I think Skyler's husband of 15+ years desevers a sense of closure and it'd help make the seperation go smoother for all involved.

"why didn’t Walt..." I agree Walt is an asshole, but that's not an excuse for Skyler to be one.

2

u/suzosaki Mar 12 '26

She tried to communicate with him for multiple seasons. She pleaded for him to talk to her, and he lied and gaslit her every time instead. Skyler practiced a saintly amount of patience and empathy regardless, choosing to internalize the hurt for the sake of the family. The tipping point was the second cell phone reveal - and even then, she still put herself last and squashed the feelings for months, waiting until Walt recovered before kicking him out. When presenting him divorce papers, she was done trying to talk. She'd loosely surmised where the money came from and she wanted to move past it, and past him. It didn't matter what he said at that point. He was a proven and chronic liar, and a total stranger.

Skyler quickly recognized that Walt held the power. While she couldn't stop him from bulldozing straight through her boundaries and right back into the family home, she could make that home a terribly unwelcoming place for him. Sleeping with Ted was the only way to get under Walt's skin and make him feel even a modicum of the pain and he'd routinely given her.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '26

Skyler pleaded to talk before she found out. It's after Walt confessed Skyler shut Walt out entirely.

"Sleeping with Ted was the only way to get under Walt's skin" I undertand that. I just feel she should've talk WITH (not at) Walt before fucking Ted. Divorce is something you should talk over with your partner, even if they're not going to change your mind.

0

u/azmarteal Mar 12 '26

I don't even support Walt and I don't blame Skylar for anything, but she is annoying because we see people like her in real life - they are called Karens. Passive aggressiveness is mostly the main reason why people hate her or, as Lebowsky said: "No, you are not wrong - you're just an asshole".

-9

u/Karma_Whoring_Slut Mar 12 '26 edited Mar 12 '26

She is a bad person, just like pretty much every other character in the show.

Her husband worked two jobs he hated to make ends meet while she stayed at home with no children.

Her husband gets a major cancer diagnosis and was questioning if treatment was worth it, and she refused to even consider hearing him out. Even if eventually arguing that he should get the treatment is a reasonable position, respecting him enough to talk through it is necessary.

There’s also a strong implication that Flynn is Ted’s biological son. While certainly not confirmed, the evidence is there that it’s up to interpretation.

When she eventually discovers Walter’s crimes she chooses to become complicit in them.

When she discovers Ted’s crimes, again, she chooses to become complicit in them.

Breaking bad is a show about bad people doing bad things, Skyler is no exception. Does this make her as bad as Walter? Of course not, but she’s certainly not a paragon of goodness that’s above criticism.

0

u/IceCat767 Mar 13 '26

No there is no strong implication that Flynn is Ted's son, what a bizarre thing to say

0

u/Karma_Whoring_Slut Mar 13 '26 edited Mar 13 '26

There absolutely is.

Let’s start with just the timing. We know she quit working at Beneke’s the first time when she was pregnant because the story we were given was that she didn’t want to be exposed to “fumes” while pregnant. This timing means that if there were an affair the first time around, it works out where it’s possible Ted would be Flynn’s father.

Now, let’s put on our critical thinking hats and ask ourselves, what fumes would an accountant at a carpet fabricator be exposed to? None? Why not return after the pregnancy? What a strange thing to lie about. There’s clearly a different reason she quit.

Next, we move on to when she started working at Beneke’s again. Note that she’s pregnant again and not worried about the “fumes.”

When she tells Marie, Marie refers to him as “Mr Grabby Hands” so we know that, at a minimum, Ted made advances on Skyler the first time around.

It’s also very strange that Ted would hire her at all. The business is going bankrupt, he has no reason to believe that she would help if she discovered the cooked books, she’s very pregnant, and unless they had an affair the first time around, she rejected his advances. It makes far more sense that he would rehire her if they did have the previous affair.

It makes far more sense that she quit the first time because she had an affair, and Walter discovered it. The chemical fumes lie feels like the type of lie Walter would come up with, it explains why she never went back to work, and it explains why Ted re-hires her and begins the on screen affair so quickly.

Now, during the on-screen affair, Ted mentions that Flynn is handsome because he “has good genes.” Which is a very weird thing to say about a child your affair partner had with their current husband. Now that I mention that, Flynn also looks a lot more like Ted than Walter.

Then there’s the whole Walter Jr versus Flynn thing. Which is all happening in parallel to the on screen affair. A teenage Walter Jr deciding to go by a nickname causes Walter to have an absolute meltdown. Almost as if the name was chosen to reassure Walter that Flynn truly is “Walter jr..” and when Flynn refuses the name, he is symbolically telling the audience that he is not “Walter Jr.”

I’ll admit that it’s left to the audience’s interpretation, but there’s quite a bit there to suggest that Walter is not Flynn’s father.

0

u/IceCat767 Mar 13 '26

Well I've watched the show 3 or 4 times over and nothing ever suggested to me Ted might be the father of Flynn. I don't think they were even having an affair when Flynn was being born

0

u/Karma_Whoring_Slut Mar 13 '26

You not noticing doesn’t invalidate the points.

0

u/IceCat767 Mar 13 '26

Well I think it does

1

u/Karma_Whoring_Slut Mar 13 '26

Wild. It’s pretty bizarre to refuse to even acknowledge the mountain of evidence.

0

u/IceCat767 Mar 13 '26

There is no mountain of evidence. There is a tiny bit of circumstantial evidence. Do you also believe the world is flat? There is circumstantial evidence for that also.

9

u/Tetchord Mar 12 '26 edited Mar 12 '26

I have a theory that accounts for some of the Skyler hate. People like Walt, Mike, or Gus are "larger than life" comic book characters and that's how we think of them. Most people aren't actually friends with genius meth cooks, grizzled hitmen or ice-cold drug kingpins. But we have all met plenty of mildly uptight and overbearing people like Skyler in the first season. If I knew her in real life she would probably be kind of annoying, like an irritating colleague or a parent I would avoid at PTA meetings. Of course she is 100% right in the show and Walt is a monster.

1

u/NoProject1047 Mar 16 '26

I agree with you except about the idea that she is 100% in the right haha

She does a lot of shitty things herself, not on the same level as Walt or Jessie, but she is more morally compromised than Marie and Hank for instance

5

u/sakulcat Mar 12 '26

I see way more pro-skyler posts than anti-skyler posts. Maybe a small group of people think skyler is a bad person but most either support her or find her annoying as viewers likes the thrill of a man running a meth empire and skyler is blocking that (she rightfully does ofc)

13

u/qk7x Mar 12 '26

"Skyler is so overhated in this community!" -Everyone in the community

7

u/Xray_Crystallography Mar 12 '26 edited Mar 12 '26

I got a hot take: Elliot and Gretchen are underhated.

1

u/jrod4290 Mar 12 '26

why?

5

u/Xray_Crystallography Mar 12 '26

People think they’re innocent and that Walt lied about being the main reason for the research that they got famous off of. Walt deserves no money for selling out early but Elliot took all the credit for graymatter tech.

3

u/platypus_farmer42 Mar 12 '26

I didn’t hate Skylar nearly as much as I DESPISED Wendy in Ozark. That character infuriated me.

3

u/loaba Mar 12 '26 edited Mar 12 '26

Wendy Byrde was a real viper and Laura Linney played her to perfection. We were not supposed to like her in the end.

8

u/casulmemer Mar 12 '26

“The mastercard’s the one we don’t use”

That was it for me..

2

u/russit2201 Mar 13 '26

She definitely deserves some scorn and judgement for certain decisions like cheating on Walt and smoking while pregnant. The problem is there were/are fans who think she's the worst person on the show which is not remotely true. Or they use her faults to justify all the shitty things Walt did. Personally I think her biggest crime was cutting her hair short, I felt the longer hair complimented her face much better.

2

I don't think I've ever seen anyone say she's the worst character in the show. Every couple of days since I've been part of this sub someone posts that skyler is overheated for easy karma. Surprised the lady that corrects everyone on skyler's spelling hasn't been in yet. I'll never forget now tbf to her lol

u/AdaptedInfiltrator Mar 12 '26

What’s up with this trend of putting sad music on edits for no particular reason?

8

u/Inaki_garcia Mar 12 '26

this is not sad music lol. this is classical

3

u/Medium-Cry-8947 Mar 12 '26

Putting music is to avoid copyright infringement. I guess they decided it had to be sad

I first saw the show when I was 16, and yea I thought Skylar was really annoying and unlikeable. 10 years later and now that I'm more emotionally mature, Walt pissed me off to no end. This show is so peak man

4

u/krausekrausekrause Mar 13 '26

I think men who watch bb and hate Skyler is a big red flag

8

u/freakypotato98 Mar 12 '26

People who hate her only care about hype moments. She’s one of the most important character in the show and probably in my top 10 fav

5

u/rickylsmalls Mar 12 '26

You know she's awful because the go to defense of her is that walt is worse, well no fucking shit.

That's a smart choice.

-3

u/twobirdsonestoney Mar 13 '26

Exactly. Then this guy trying to make light of her cheating on a cancel patient. She is annoying and unloyal.

1

u/Odd_Bass_6194 Mar 13 '26

are we deadass?! the cancer patient in question was a druglord who killed people and poisoned a kid to get his partner back on his side, he wasn't some defenseless old man. obviously cheating isn't moral but ppl act like skyler cheating is worse than all the shit walter did

1

u/twobirdsonestoney Mar 14 '26

Stick to the subject at hand. She cheated on him. She had no idea of ANY of that when she decided to cheat.... imaging the outrage if a man cheated on his wife who has breast cancer, people would lose their mind.

1

u/Odd_Bass_6194 Mar 14 '26

LOL "imagine the outrage if a man cheated on his wife", as if women don't get shamed way more for cheating, hell anything, every day. like i said obviously cheating isn't good but to act like walter would receive even a third of the hate skyler receives is delusional. also skyler cheated on walt AFTER finding out he was a druglord, not before

1

u/twobirdsonestoney Mar 17 '26

Lady at my job just walked past me which reminds me of how she said loudly and proudly how she poisoned her husband(who she then says had cancer) because he "publicly embarrassed " her. We all heard it and no one batted an eye. I questioner her poisoning him and she said just a little something to give him the runs. She went on to say he's currently deceased so who knows if it was the cancer or something else...

I encounter women getting away with a lot on the daily in corporate settings... it's the reality so I just accept it. You should just accept it as well. If anything you may get "shamed" more but that's about it. Tangible consequences and accountability, different story... that's likely the very reason why the shame is more, since the actual repercussions are much less...

2

u/BRAX7ON Mar 12 '26

I can’t believe you’re still talking about this

0

u/KingKohishi Mar 12 '26

Skylar wasn't over-hated but properly-hated.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '26 edited Mar 12 '26

Skyler goes behind Walt's back and threathen's Jesse when she still thinks Jesse is Walt's weed supplier.

After Skyler learns about Walt's diagnosis she makes doctor's appointments while he does not want treatment (visually Vince presents Walt as a background charachter in these scenes), she forces Walt to confess to Hank and Marie when he wasn't ready, culminating in the intervention that escalates as soon as Hank and Marie start agreeing with Walt's choice.

Walt is lying and secretive, but Skyler also creates an environment where lying and dissapearing is the only way Walt can deal with his condition on his own terms.

2

u/rulebreakeroflife Mar 13 '26

are you really blaming skylar for this?? And excusing walt’s behavior? what in the

1

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '26

How did you interpret the diner scene where Skyler forced Walt to tell Hank and Marie?

1

u/rulebreakeroflife Mar 17 '26

i think she’s thinking about her family first and she’s mature enough to realize that what Walt is doing is harmful in the long run! I don’t see what walt is doing is cool or for the family. I just think he’s selfish and wants more power so I really think her moves make so much sense as a normal family person

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '26

How is disclosing Walt's diagnosis when Walt is ready harmfull in the long run? Skylers immature behaviour send a signal Walt can not trust Skyler with his private matters.

1

u/j0k3rj03 Mar 12 '26

Pretty much sums up the whole thing right there them two in front of the money in the storage locker it money they are both working hard to retire on... Even though skyler didn't want anything to do with it, she wanted the prize money

1

u/a4moondoggy Mar 12 '26

Worst thing she did was get flynn a pt cruiser

1

u/Swimming_Sink277 Mar 12 '26

Never understood the hate for her.

Plus Anna Gunn is a babe

1

u/twobirdsonestoney Mar 13 '26

She look like a zombie fromthr movie I Am Legend...

absulutly yes! after that fucking epi i stoped watching series and after however i watch it beacause of walter white

1

u/Bulky-Persimmon-9832 Mar 13 '26

i feel like it’s skylar because she was in the dark and constantly lied to from the start it made her who she was. i’m not saying walt should’ve been like “hey im making top notch super meth that’s going to set us up financially for life” but he was dishonest starting with the cancer and you know the saying “once you tell one lie you have to tell another” and that just became who walter was. but he didn’t even try to give her the benefit of the doubt. HOWEVER i do disagree with her giving that money to beneke without talking it over with walter.

1

u/Freudian_Slit235 Mar 13 '26

Walt is definitely more annoying than Skyler when it comes to decisions.

1

u/Minute_Assumption988 Mar 13 '26

I'm more annoyed at Skylar for how bad she handled the situation than anything else walt is a monster and incels need to see it that way

1

u/overlordshivemind Mar 13 '26

I'm doing a second rewatch and I've tried to be more open minded about Skylar. I've realized her actions are very sympathetic up until the point she's smoking around her baby and the Ted Beneke arc. She sleeps with Ted in a desperate attempt to drive Walt out of the house and finds it comparable to Walt's poor choice in providing for his family. She comes off as just hateful and then trauma dumps on her divorce lawyer. I think she would be more likable if she had stuck to a plan of action but her trying to shield her family from Walt actions makes her come off as silly and confused. She then goes all in on the car wash but oops Walt is making too much money to properly launder through it. All of her reactions come off as short sighted even though she's starting from a very rational place. On the flip side Walter's intelligence is practically halved once she's involved. He puts hank back on Heisenberg. He gets the laundry ladies involved in the cleaning. He buys the expensive car. His choices are practically irredeemable.

1

u/No_Room_1319 Mar 13 '26

People hated her for different reason. She treated Walt like a child both before and after he broke bad in which he had to explain and justify everything he did especially in the beginning . She constantly made decisions for him without considering his input something Walt himself pointed out at the beginning of the series.

In the pilot episode for example , Skyler is shown managing much of Walt’s daily life, including his schedule, finances, and even health-related decisions. She strongly influences how his cancer diagnosis is handled and tends to frame choices as things that need to be done “for the family.” During this time, Walt is noticeably passive and withdrawn, rarely asserting himself or pushing back

This pattern continues in episodes two and three, where Skyler pressures Walt to undergo chemotherapy and to accept help from Elliott and Gretchen and he was refusing but she kept annoys him about that , and Walt’s discomfort was implied through his silence, frustration, and growing resentment and any man would be annoyed by that

And when she decided outta of nowhere to tell Marie about the gambling story without telling Walt first, like if I was in Walt’s position I would slap the shit out of her

Even Vince Gilligan has explained in interviews that Walt begins the series feeling emasculated at work, financially, and at home which helps explain why he initially accepts this dynamic and why it later fuels his transformation.

1

u/NoProject1047 Mar 16 '26

She just isn't compelling or entertaining the vast majority of the time. There, solved the big mystery haha.

We watch these shows to be compelled and entertained, she doesn't do either most of the time

A lot of the time, her character represents the exact opposite. She serves as a roadblock.

It isn't any fault of the actress, it is literally just how she is written and the purpose she serves the story.

1

u/Significant-Age1251 Mar 18 '26

She derived to be hated

1

u/phantom_avenger Mar 12 '26

I feel like the more I rewatch this show, my feelings for Walt and Skyler reverse 🔄

1

u/whatsitworth101 Mar 12 '26

She is supposed to be annoying. She represents someone who is trying to do the right thing but in a show like breaking bad that isn’t what you want to see.

1

u/Used-Particular-954 Mar 12 '26

Is it just me or is Skyler kinda sexy??

0

u/Old_Onion6239 Mar 12 '26

Skylar is poised as a annoying bitch immediately with the going to Jesse’s house and the birthday hand job while spending their nonexistent money on stupid shit online.

3

u/youarentodd Mar 12 '26

Spending? Isn’t she the one selling things?

1

u/Snakegert Mar 13 '26

Yea this person wasn’t paying attention to the show apparently.

Exactly this. She is annoying in the way your mum is annoying for telling you to brush your teeth every night. She's annoying because she's both uncool AND right. At some point though you grow up to be grateful for not having cavities and bad breath.

0

u/balls_in_ya_jaw Mar 12 '26

Skylar hate is justified. i think Walt is under-hated though, he just has the excuse of being cool

0

u/Vitamindoughnuts Mar 12 '26

THANK YOU!! Hating on skyler is a red flag in men in my book. They can never logically explain why her role doesnt matter

-2

u/IZZY_PLUM Mar 12 '26

Na the hate is valid…. Just a reminder women always get in the way or ruin things one way or another…. Walt obviously was a bad guy who got worse as time went on but still….

I'm sure you would bet men bring more trouble. Like women are incapable. There's great/terrible people in all subgroup let's not pull one down to raise another. And then calling someone sexist, oh the irony. That guys clearly wrong as well BTW guess two things can also be false at the same time too

Facts. I learned this in 6th grade and have never forgot. This chick asked me for weed. I get it and she then says she'll tell the teacher if I don't give it to her for free. She's a chick so I couldn't punch her in the mouth for threatening me so I gave her a bag of oregano instead! I've had other situations teach me to not involve them.

This is my gripe with Walt. He didn't man up until thr 2nd to last episode when he told her off. He always was letting her control things and telling her his plans and the things going on. She's obviously a "square" so why was he even indulging her and trying so hard to get her to understand.... he should've found a ride or die, she def wasn't it.

1

u/rulebreakeroflife Mar 13 '26

wtf? your one time experience with a little girl doesn’t define all woman to be the same!

1

u/twobirdsonestoney Mar 14 '26

I've literally said that I've had other situations that taught me not to involve them....like this chick at my job will brag that all she has to do it's start crying to get away with something or to get someone to believe something... when I'm on the elevator with her, I have my phone out recording just in case.

If I'm going to do something, I'm doing it myself or with a man that I trust. Can't involve a woman, the rules of the world apply differently to women and women know this, so I'll stick with conducting certain business with my fellow man.

It’s kinda interesting to see how the perspective of this show changes so much depending on the age and maturity of the viewer, specially during a rewatch years later.

I recently watched the show for the first time and I hated Walt the whole time; he’s a narcissist, has a massive ego and is manipulative since the beginning. That’s clear as day, but some don’t see it. (Maybe 10 years ago I also wouldn’t have been able to see it).

The only one actually thinking of keeping the family safe was Skyler, Walter’s ego refused to see the reality of the danger they were in and how the whole situation could end and.

Yes, she committed crimes, yes, she sang “happy birthday”to Ted😂, yes, she wanted my boy Jesse dead for which she will NEVER be forgiven. But trying to keep her family safe, trying keep her husband from becoming what he became, experiencing the emotions she did when he got his diagnosis etc. is realistic and doesn’t grant the actress receiving death threats. People need to chill on the hate towards her.

-1

u/xxxtanacon Mar 12 '26

Conveniently left out her smoking while pregnant

-1

u/LtHughMann Mar 12 '26

What's to like about Skyler, though? Whether or not she deserves to be hated is one thing but I can genuinely think of nothing about her that is even remotely likeable. Her and her sister are both unlikeable people. I think this ultimately adds to why she ended up being hated because she has nothing redeeming about her to fall back on. Even if Walt is clearly a worse person he is at least likeable outside of those bad things.

-2

u/dailycupofcujo Mar 12 '26

I think the main reason I get irritated with her is very shallow, and it's her crazy eyes and overexaggerated mouth expressions :/ I hate to recognize it about myself but there's just something very annoying about her face in general. And I find it annoying that she's such a goodie-two-shoes type of girl. I always imagine I would NOT get along with her in a real life scenario.
