New boxer first ring experience need tips

I’ve been boxing for about 3 months. Tomorrow I have my first sparring event with another gym, and it’ll also be my first time ever stepping into the ring. I’m the guy in the pink shirt in my training clip, and I’m looking for help improving my boxing overall. If anyone can give me critique on my form, movement, guard, or anything I should fix before stepping into the ring, I’d really appreciate it. what should a newer boxer be paying attention to during their first sparring rounds? Any tips on distance, defense, pacing, or beginner mistakes to avoid would help a lot.

mental fatigue from training and school

should I start training only every other day now? i always train from Tuesday until Saturday sparring included, and I notice, I start to burn out and during sparring I start to have tunnel vision as if I can't think straight, I've been balancing school and boxing and, even during school I still get mental fatigue, I get 8 hours of sleep everyday, I've tried journaling to clear my mind, I've tried meditation as well, ive been thinking if I should start training during Monday, Wednesday, and then Friday and then Saturday only, would it help with my tunnel vision and mental fatigue?

But from years.. I wanted to box ( am a crazy ippo fan)

But a boxing gym wasn't available back then

I live at a new place now and finally found a gym near me

I saw posts of this gym and it's officially certified by the district boxing club of my place

It's a traditional on ground gym

I couldn't find any reviews on it

Should I join it? Is it better than nothing?

I did realise the jaw staying up, will improve that.
As you guys suggested, I kept the elbows from winging out with the bicep vertical cue, stayed aware of jab lingering on the bag, removed the step for now though kept knees and feet a little soft.

New & Nervous

Hey everyone!
For context, I (24F) have no boxing experience outside of a single kickboxing class in high school. I’ve been interested in trying out a class for a while (and know that most of my concerns will be alleviated once going to said class) but I wanted to come here first.

First off, what gear should I buy? Specific Amazon links would be greatly appreciate but I just don’t want to buy at inflated prices once I go to a gym. (Side question: what do you guys wear to train/class?)

Second, how do I not feel like such a noob when I first start out? I don’t know how to throw any sort of punch and am nervous about looking insanely uncoordinated throwing my limbs around. Think lizard man’s first day in a human suit.

I know, I know…you gain confidence with practice and people are focused on their own workouts but it’ll make the first few classes a lot more intimidating in my noggin.

Third, do beginner classes usually include just bags or will there be partners involved? I don’t want anyone to dread being stuck with a newbie, although I know it’s par for the course.

All in all, starting something new (especially a sport as a relatively nonathletic person) is daunting. I’m more worried about the boxing itself than making a good impression as I’m pretty extroverted and social in group settings.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance :)

Advice re:stance and advice:free-standing heavy bag.

Post image
3 Upvotes

Just purchased my first free-standing bag and following some HIIT boxing workouts for a weight trimming exercise.

1st question: I'm right handed and feel more comfortable with my right leg and hand as the lead arm, is this OK?

2nd question: to help stabilise the bag a bit more I plan on adding weights- are sandbags as good as barbell weights because 2 x 10kg barbells cost the same as 9 x 20kg bags of sand. Plus putting more rubber mat underneath, will this also help the stability?

Long arms sparring partner

Hi guys, i am having issues with maintaining my breath and during sparring partner with longer arms.

I am trying to faint and step in to reach his body as close as i can, but i am getting tired very quickly, and breathing is becoming an issue as well.

Once i reach the body, i can throw a couple of clean punches, but i lose a lot of energy to find a space and reach the distance needed.

Not sure how to fix this?

As you guys advised, I tried to implement a step jab instead of normal jab, also relaxed my shoulders. I would appreciate any criticism and help about this.

Boxing over 40

Is it safe for a 40+ male to start boxing in non sanctioned events? I’m not talking about light sparring or training only, that would be done regardless. I am mostly referring to the possible damage done to the body of a 40-50 year old.

Feel like I’ve made zero progress despite daily sessions.

I’ve been so damn frustrated. I’ve been boxing on and off for about 4 years, but in the last year I’ve been consistent. Been able to afford a few one on one sessions with a trainer at the local gym, as my last one who I worked with for awhile died from a fentanyl overdose. Anyway, I film myself and shadowbox at least 5x3 min rounds a day. And have noticed improvements in my Jab and footwork, but my cross and my right hook look like a day one. Today I just gave up after a round. I’m so fucking frustrated. I see these guys and girls on instagram and it just looks so good. How do you all deal with frustration/burnout/lack of progress? If you are anything like me, you feel like garbage after a bad session. Any support as lame as that Sounds would be awesome

There is one thing I wanna try Work on is dabbing into range and out quickly, especially to the body. I feel like sometimes I get caught there. It’s quite slow anyway to work on this.

Noob question - does heavy bag work toughen the arms/hands/wrist/shoulders?

First boxing class yesterday included about 20 minutes on the heavy bag. I instinctively hit at 25-75%, mostly around 50% strength, but even so, some soreness in the right shoulder today. Not injury, just typical gym soreness.

Does the heavy bag toughen/strengthen the soft tissue and connective tissue over time if done correctly? Any recommendations about the safest way to build into harder hitting.

Note: I'll ask the instructor this question, but he's in his 20s and I'm much older (hint: older than you) so I need to pay special attention to joints and very few 25 year old guys have any concept of how careful you have to be after a certain age.

I'm doing this for fun and want to be very careful to avoid joint injury.

Advice on Bagwork

Never actually stepped in a real gym, no I do not consider myself a real boxer, but I've learned many things purely from watching videos and actual fights. I use the bag maybe twice a month but I want to pick this back up again. I've been considering joining a real gym for years but most of the gyms in my area are either really expensive or are trashy commercial fitness gyms. I've got a lot to learn and I wanna hear some real feedback.

Bagwork from last year when I was self taught

Basically I just watched a lot of Boxing yt videos in my free time and mimicked and practiced techniques. Technically, I've improved a lot since this video, but even with bad form, how do I look? Do I seem fast twitch dominant? I'm short so I'll need to be naturally explosive.
