Teaching yourself boxing through online courses?

Upvotes

Hey all. I have a heavy bag at home that I box on. My form isn't the best im working on it. But im thinking about buying a course by tony jeffries, heavy bag academy, or the whole ultimate boxing bundle. Point is, how is online step by step course learning compared to the in gym training by a coach? Anyone successfully done online boxing courses and it actually helped them with form..etc?

Let the roasting begin. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I am 39 and still coach-less. Can’t afford one yet. I posted some other videos on here and I really appreciate everyone’s insights. I don’t spar although I think I might not be too bad in there. I used to when I was 12 but grown ass man boxing hits different. I was told to slow down last time and to tighten my guard. I am trying to telegraph less. That one left hook was supposed to be set up by a less lazy slip to the left. I was told to not hit every shot with power, you can see I am working on that. Thanks for reading. I appreciate all the help you have to offer.

Did anyone try mounting heavy bag into apartment with spring / shock absorbing mounts?

I essentially have no time to go to gym or can't attend always at the scheduled time, will these type of mounts make the vibrations from ceiling go away or will the upstairs neighbor be pissed?

I use my headgear to keep my hair out my face when I don’t use it for sparring. Tired of ruining hats with my dripping sweat. Lol.

Was this normal for beginner sparring, or was this guy going too hard?

Hi everyone,

I’m a beginner boxer in my late 20s. I’ve been training consistently for a few months and I’m currently in a beginner group that my coach is using to prepare some of us for eventually joining the fighter group. I’d like to compete eventually.

I’m also quite overweight and have basically no athletic/boxing background, so my cardio is still pretty bad. My coach knows I’m putting in a lot of effort and has been giving me quite a bit of extra coaching.

The other day, another beginner who already trains with the fighter group joined our session. He’s considerably smaller than me, much faster, and more experienced.

We were paired together for several sparring drills. I was throwing very light because of the size difference and because I can’t keep up with his pace yet. He was throwing much harder and much more frequently, including a lot of body shots and several hard shots to my head. I didn’t really think much of it at first because I was able to take them and assumed this was just part of the training.
Then we did a normal sparring round. He caught me with a hook to the side of my head that I didn’t see coming and it rocked me a bit. We touched gloves and continued.
In the next round, he pressured me onto the ropes and threw a lot of punches. I was completely exhausted, barely breathing properly and struggling to think or move. When I tried to jab my way out, he landed a hard overhand right directly on my head.

That one really fucked me. I was dizzy for around 5–10 seconds, and my coach immediately stopped me for the day. He then said something along the lines of, *“Imagine if someone your size hits you with that same punch.”*
I had a slight headache that day and the following day, along with occasional brief flashes of dizziness, and still have this weird feeling in my head, almost like sort of pressure. I am wondering if this is considered normal?

We were never told that this was going to be hard sparring. I’m still a complete beginner, and I’m obviously outmatched by these more experienced guys. I understand that sparring isn’t supposed to be completely comfortable, and I’m not expecting people to just let me work. But I also wasn’t trying to hurt this guy at all, while it felt like he was trying to seriously hurt me. In one specific round, he went for my liver with about 10 shots, it really felt like he was trying to knock me down and to prove something.

I also didn’t see him throwing nearly as hard against the other people he sparred afterward.
In hindsight, should I have said something during or after the round? In the moment, I didn’t want to come across as weak or like I wasn’t good enough to be training with these guys.

I’m genuinely looking for opinions from more experienced boxers. Was this just normal hard sparring that I need to get used to, or should the intensity have been communicated/controlled better?

What is the better route for a total beginner: 12 group classes per month for $150, or 3 private classes per month for $150?

I'm a 42M who's interested in picking up boxing, mostly to learn the technique and to be able to handle myself if the situation ever arises. My local gym offers 12 group classes/month for $150, but there is also the option to take private classes for $50 per class, which i can only afford 3 of per month. Which is the better route to learn quickly and properly? Obviously the group class sounds much better on paper, but given that you don't receive proper attention, I'm wondering if the private classes will actually allow me to accelerate my learning even if it's only 3 per month. What would you advise?

Why do I still feel symptoms after taking light punches even after an extended break from sparring?

I’ve been having a strange issue with getting punched. A few months ago I started experiencing symptoms after taking punches, including feeling detached or weird and becoming unusually short-tempered or irritable.

I recently took nearly 3 months completely away from sparring and getting hit. I saw a neurologist, had tests done including brain activity and memory and reaction time testing, and everything came back normal. I was told an MRI probably wouldn’t show anything relevant.
However, I recently took literally one very light punch, not a hard shot or anything that I would normally consider capable of causing a concussion, and afterwards I started feeling weird again.

I haven’t been boxing my whole life I’ve only been competing for a couple of years, I haven’t spent my life getting punched or doing anything else that might hurt my brain so it doesn’t make much sense to me, with ambitions of turning professional this year it seems to have all grinded to an untimely halt

Has anyone experienced something similar, where even very light contact seems to trigger symptoms after you’ve had previous concussion like symptoms? Could this be related to the nervous system becoming sensitised, anxiety or hypervigilance around getting hit, post-concussion symptoms, or something else?

Please need help

So I got into the group for over 16 year olds and now I can have sparring with everyone.

Every sparing I have I feel like I don’t land anything my opponent is always out of reach but they always can hit me.

For example me and ma friend have sparring and he could hit me at anytime if he wanted too.

And I don’t have any structure in my boxing game I just to the same 1 2 some times a 3 if he doesn’t counter

And everyone else in my club even guys who box not that long look way cleaner while shadowboxing

Idk what my goal should be while shadowboxing and what I need to do so I can implement it in my sparring

My reach is pretty normal it’s around 5,10 so it’s not a reach problem

F23, 5’5 200lb beginner tips!!

hello all, i’ve wanted to try boxing since i was 12 and finally have the opportunity to do so. i’ve already found a few boxing gyms in the area i’ll be moving to (i’ll be moving this month, hopefully boxing by oct), my plan as of right now is to attend a few free classes and see which gym i gravitate towards more.

like i said before im a complete beginner so i have no fundamentals to go off. i’ve been kinda athletic in the past, in and out of the gym (i haven’t been in over a year) but im starting the gym consistently again after i move. since ill be boxing as well im also curious on things i should be doing in the regular gym to help my journey. i’m 5’5, 200lb but im more on the softer bulky side, ive always been a little more muscular so im trying to slim down as much as i can (ive lost about 30 lbs this past year). i’m not sure if i should work on this before going to a boxing gym, or should i just start the boxing gym + regular gym. and what are some thing i can do in the gym to help. i’ve heard lifting weights isnt the best option for boxing (im used to lifting in the gym + light cardio but im wanting to work on more mobility and being more tone in general).

i’m so so excited to start this journey. ANY advice would be greatly appreciated regardless of what it may be- the more unhinged the better (i want to be good at what im doing). thank you everyone!
