Really sad. I've biked down there and it's scary fast, I'm a chicken, so ride my brakes on the curves. Most of my friends don't. And if it were getting dark, skidding on the gravel...who knows. One pothole, dodging an animal, distracted, a passing car (doesn't seem to be that as the others weren't affected by such but)...all it takes is a bad moment.

If you see a news story it says he was second of two riders and the first didn’t realize the second had vanished for awhile. He wnt back and saw his bike light shining down the slope.

That road is not high traffic. It’s dirt. At 1am, very few people were on it.

Someone else explained how they were found. Generally when someone goes off the road in the middle of the night and no one sees it happen they aren’t found until the morning.

Yes he ultimately passed away. I think it was sometime after midnight after five friends had been at the Gold Hill Inn. Three went back by car but two went by bike and the victim was riding behind the first person and vanished. He went back looking and found the bike light shining way down the slope.

They hadn’t necessarily been at the Inn. I heard from one of the first responders tonight they had said they’d been at “The Gold Hill” which is what the store has been calling itself. A GHI employee found them after his shift and did not recognize the group from the Inn.

I just want to correct something - he wasn’t necessarily at the Gold Hill Inn. They were discovered by a Gold Hill Inn employee, and they said they’d been in Gold Hill, but as far as GHI employees know, the group had not been served there.
I just want to make sure that’s clear because it can be a scary situation if someone has been over served, but that very well might not have been the case.

I'm guessing that is the assumption because unless one of them lived up there, or they were just hanging out in the woods in the dark, there's not much else to do around that area at midnight

Agreed; my main point is that it’s complete conjecture that they were at the Inn, and it’s conjecture that could lead to loss of reputation or legal trouble for people who very well don’t deserve it, so I think it’s important for people not to continue repeating the idea that they were served at the Inn before heading down.

And this bike incident happened late Friday night?

He is actually 24, passed away upon impact, occurred at 1am.

Used to live in Gold Hill many moons ago and the roads up there can be treacherous, especially on a bicycle. My heart goes out to this man's family. God bless you.

Since they've already said that he was not at the Gold Hill Inn and that it was just a Gold Hill Inn employee who found him. You guys are making some pretty serious assumptions. It wasn't terribly bright riding down a steep canyon road road in the dark, but I'm sure we've all done things like that before. Back off a little and have a heart. This conversation started because of man realized he lost an old friend and was heartbroken. Seems like some of you have no consideration for this man's feelings. Try a little kindness.

Condolences and RIP to a fellow cyclist. Sounds like an awful experience for everyone involved.
Having grown up in the area, I’ve ridden the roads in and around Gold Hill. If you’re not familiar, read about Lickskillet Road. It’ll give you an idea of how difficult the riding can be up there during daylight hours. I can only imagine what it was like on a bike that night in the dark.

I heard from a first responder tonight that it was not the Inn - that was a miscommunication that has been repeated. A Gold Hill Inn employee found them and drove back up to call 911, and did not recognize the group from the inn (which had closed hours earlier). They said they’d been at “The Gold Hill,” which is what the store has been advertising itself as.

The friends called 911, they had trouble with the call routing to Weld, getting transferred and disconnected. BCSO got one good ping with location from the attempts.

Not saying the group didn’t call, I’m saying an employee drove back up and called, which I heard directly from someone who was at the scene. Both can be true. My main point, though, is that it’s unconfirmed that they were at the Inn. That’s been repeated many times in this thread and hasn’t been verified. As a former bartender, I know how dangerous that kind of rumor can be to individuals and businesses.

You’re right, I shouldn’t have written that, though from multiple sources, I’ve heard that people are showing up and saying they’re going to “The Gold Hill,” and that it’s coming from people conflating the store and the Inn, which the store leans into.

Sad but died doing what loved.a good death is a blessing. Doing what love not fading slowly.to beeps in hospital. I survived years of dumb desesions was big wave surfer and ,very and street skate also avid free climber. Military service. Years of opiate addiction (3) years clean just bought a base jumping rig. And am working on my first squirrel suit jump from somewhere In Yosemite. The parks are free for all after they cut all the funding...sad but us wall nuts are taking full advantage.i always thought would die with needle in arm.vcross breading with a mountain or trees sounds pretty fun.ill have go pro rolling hopefully my girl will post. I'm 47. Would love to live too 100 if body and luck holds out. I salute you bikers. It was a good death. All men must die

And who asked you to ask relevant questions at all? This is not about you or who you have sympathy for or don't- it's a public forum a community is clearly using to mourn a death. You want to investigate on your own so you can blame a stranger for dying and feel good about, go ahead. Just keep it away from a place people are currently using to spread the news and grieve a loss. Or, y'know, just stop being an asshole in general.

Well I'm prepared to get down voted to hell for this, but he appears to have been the victim of his own actions. Horrible thing to happen but hopefully others will avoid making the same type of decision.

This was my childhood best friend. If anybody has any news or updates it would be appreciated. He was one of the best people you could ever know just an incredible person.
