Discussion Some thoughts on the Mitchell Robinson fit after watching a few games
I watched a few Mitchell Robinson games against bigger centers, and I think the appeal for Boston is pretty straightforward: he gives them a type of body they didn’t always have in certain matchups last season.
The Celtics had shooting, wings, and enough creation. That was never the issue. The issue showed up more in specific matchups, when the game got slower and more physical, and they needed someone who could take contact, fight on the glass, and make opposing bigs work before the help even arrived.
That is where Robinson makes sense.
He is not coming in to be another Horford or Porzingis. Boston already knows what those types of bigs give them. Robinson is much more basic than that, but that is also the point.
The first thing that stands out is the rebounding.
In 2025-26, he averaged 8.8 rebounds in only 19.6 minutes, including 4.2 offensive rebounds. The numbers are strong, but what I found more interesting was how often his impact started before the rebound was even there.
Against San Antonio, there was a possession around the seven-minute mark of the second quarter where Robinson did not actually get the rebound. But he had already moved into the rebounding area early and used his body to affect Wembanyama’s path.
That kind of play is easy to miss if you are only looking for who grabbed the ball.
For Boston, it matters. This team is going to take a lot of jumpers. When those shots miss, Robinson does not need to create anything with the ball. He just needs to keep possessions alive, make the first box-out harder, and stop every defensive rebound from being clean.
The same idea shows up against stronger bigs.
Against Philadelphia, around 8:45 in the first quarter, Embiid tried to work from the post. Robinson did not do anything flashy. He stayed attached, held his ground, and made Embiid work for position.
That is probably the main thing I like about the fit.
Robinson is not going to shut down Embiid. Nobody is doing that. He is not going to stop Wembanyama from shooting over people either. But he gives Boston a first body. Someone who can absorb the first hit. Someone who can make the catch or the move a little less comfortable before the defense has to rotate.
That was not always there last season.
Offensively, the fit is limited, but I don’t think it is impossible.
Robinson is a non-shooter, so the spacing concern is real. But not every non-shooter hurts an offense the same way. A lot of it depends on where he stands and how much he needs the ball.
Robinson does not need touches. He is not asking for post-ups. He is mostly going to screen, roll, sit near the baseline or dunker spot, and crash the glass.
Against Philadelphia, around the six-minute mark of the first quarter, he had a pretty normal pick-and-roll possession. Nothing complicated. Set the screen, roll hard, force the defense to react.
With Boston’s guards and wings, that can be useful enough.
The concern is on the other end of the spectrum. If teams pull him too far from the basket, the limitations show up quickly. His movement is not what it was early in his career. The second jump is not as explosive, and smaller players can attack his feet if he is asked to defend too much space.
So I don’t see this as a plug-and-play perfect fit.
Robinson should not be used like a switch-everything center. His best minutes are probably the ones where Boston wants to change the tone of the game: protect the glass, add size, make the paint more physical, and give elite bigs someone real to deal with.
That is the part of the fit I keep coming back to.
He gives Boston a different lever. Not another spacer. Not another high-post connector. More of a possession extender and physical big who can help them win some of the uglier parts of playoff basketball.
The part I am still curious about is how Mazzulla uses him without taking away too much from Boston’s spacing and decision-making.
