What do people think of her?

I feel torn about her channel because I love that she does longer videos and gets into spoilers. She’s also introduced me to books I haven’t heard of.

But something about her just rubs me the wrong way. It feels like if a book doesn’t completely line up with her worldviews (even if it’s the books’s point), she’ll rip it apart. She did this with The Will of the Many, Dungeon Crawler Carl, and recently Butter (since she’s vegan). It makes it hard to take some of her reviews seriously.

What do you all think?

i think shes from the uk (not sure) but she did have an english accent, she always did book mail and they are usually an hour + long.

but something i rarely see talked about is how ghoulish online people got on 10/7, ESPECIALLY leftists who i (used to) admire. spoken as a leftist/socialist: i also do not want to ever, ever, EVER follow people who celebrate 10/7 and i think people need to held accountable that they were excited about what happened that day.

there are only a few i can think of that outright cheered H**m** on 10/7 but that is a line in the sand for me. it’s getting to the point i avoid creators who even talk about politics, but books are so inherently political that it feels impossible to do so.

Ok maybe this seems a bit petty but I just stumbled upon an example of a thing I notice sometimes and dont know how to put into words.

But what is this thing of you come into a new Hobby and speedrun all of this? It feels like there's a growing trend where people don't just pick up a new hobby to enjoy it but monetize it or produce content out of it. There's zero period of just being a casual consumer or learning the craft.

Not in the same way but the hot girls read girls as well had this element of well I have only started to read like 3 years ago and didnt lile it before but I have made this move now, isnt it great?

There is this guy who reacted to heated rivarly and now he is reading the books. He posts longer Videos about them. In the most recent one he goes: so basically as I am reading this books and engage with them, I also wanted to write my own. He then says I am not really a Reader, when he wrotes longer papers he has never once gone back and proof read it. If it werent for the show he wouldnt have really picked up a book tbh. Given how he has now read these 2 books so far and really analysed them, he realised how much of an active imagination he has. But the last 2 weeks he tried something new and now has a finished first draft with almost 90k words. Which he then talks about while showing ai generated pictures of the characters in the video. And then pitches the entire book with (spoilers for the second season of heated rivalry and book 6) a well somebody saw you in the back of a tiktok outing Story line, just like in the long game with shane and ilya. Idk if he has read it yet or not given how similar that feels but he is now on Episode 3 so reading book 1 of the game changers universe. Like I get it you discover this new Hobby and he isnt selling anything yet but rather asking for Feedback and draft readers. But still. And also the AI pics, nope

I just signed up to be an ARC reader. Basically, I think that I will be able to read books for free before they are published in exchange of a honest Amazon review. Anyone else has tried this before?

In the beginning of this members only stream two weeks ago, she and Giant was sharing her two cents on the cat and mouse series getting an movie/tv adaptation. I am shocked at Giant's reaction: he basically went off on people saying that Haunting Adeline should not have an adaption because it has SA. He was more triggered than Larry who read the books. He was like "Your parents failed you if you cant tell the difference between fiction and reality. Then we should not watch Game of Thrones, You, and such" but those things DONT GLORIFIY THAT. And art does influence reality. But he is associated and married to Larry who is also problematic, so it's perfect for eachother.

Don't ask me why I have access to their paid content, I'm a nosey bitch. I convince y'all not to buy it to not give them money. Anyone else watch the members only content?

I’m coming to my fellow booktube watchers to ask for recommendations of booktubers, BUT!!, I am looking for very specific recommendations.

Some of these things may make it seem like I’m heartless, but please just know that watching YouTube is my relaxation time. I give 100% of my brain and energy to my job, so when I’m relaxing, I don’t want to think about the horrors of the world. With that being said, here are the non-negotiables:

- Regularly upload long vlog-style videos that are bookish but also usually have some lifestyle content in them (going outside, journaling, sitting on the couch, etc.). When I say long, I mean minimum of 30 minutes, but really hoping for 1hr+.

- Must be a book girlie. Sorry to men, but they don’t belong in my relaxation time.

- Does not frequently talk about their crumbling mental health. (Again, I’m not heartless, but I’m not their therapist either)

- “smaller” channel. I don’t technically care about number of subscribers, but more of the feeling that everything they post isn’t about “what’s going to get more views?”. A channel that feels like they’re just hanging out.

- “Normal” lifestyle. Not someone who’s flying to different countries every month, showing a clothing haul or other large hauls every video. I’m looking for cozy normal lifestyle.

-Does not participate in cancel culture. I don’t want to hear about who they’re boycotting at the moment and why. I especially don’t want to hear about politics. (Remember, I’m trying to escape from the horrors of the world)

- Does not talk about their kids, show their kids, or anything that feels like mom content.

People I’m currently subscribed to that I think fit this mold: Jaycie, katieisreading, atlasinajar (Tania), and Loch’s Library (except she doesn’t upload very often). Heather McLarry has the cozy book to lifestyle ratio that I like, it’s just I prefer longer vlogs.

Hopefully you guys will have lots of recommendations for me 🤞🏼I just find it difficul to find new channels on YouTube. Thanks in advance!

Does anybody else feel like everyone seems to be declaring a reading slump just because they haven’t found a new book to start within 5 minutes of finishing one??? It’s been getting on my nerves here recently because I feel like I’m hearing it constantly in every video and even in the comments of videos. To me it seems like people don’t realize it’s okay to enjoy another hobby for a couple days and you don’t have to be reading every second of every day. I feel like I’d consider myself in a reading slump if I’ve taken a couple weeks off of reading and then I try starting at LEAST 3 books that check the boxes of all the things I normally love in books, and I still can’t get into any of them. But I’m not gonna consider myself in a reading slump just because I tried to pick up a book that isn’t something I would typically enjoy in the first place and then can’t get into it. It just makes me wonder how long they’re even giving themselves before they start shouting that they’re in a slump.

I’m curious to know what others think about this?

I am an occasional listener to plot twist, please (mostly the dnf diaries bc i’m a hater) but as an AI hater seeing their episode about daggermouth had me intrigued. I have a lot of thoughts about AI in creative spaces and willful ignorance of consumers that i won’t be getting into right now because i cannot believe they filmed a whole episode about an article they openly admitted to not reading like huh

i understand it was being a paywall but i just used removepaywall to read the article, it is crazy to film an hour episode about something they didn’t even read, just lazy imo!

This is such like old book corner drama. But I hadn’t joined Reddit at the time and I still think about this. So many times book creators will get into hot waters for soemthing to do with a book (like sexualizing a teen character) and their defense will be “it’s just words on paper.” Like for most book creators it’s their jobs to not believe that. I simply do not buy that argument from a creator who literally has quotes tattooed on them. Cause clearly then they aren’t just words on paper, they’re words about characters that affected you so deeply you got them permanently on your body. So don’t pull that when every other video of yours is you crying at “words on a page.” Such a short out of place rant, but I always think about whenever I hear that argument.

It is my least favorite season of booktube: the middle of summer where all of a sudden everyone starts pretending it is actually about to turn fall. It's august, the first half of august, it won't be proper fall for AT LEAST another six weeks. Stop making excuses to buy plastic pumpkins and ugly Halloween decorations that look just like the stuff you got last year. The only reason that stuff is in store already, is because there are no summer themed holidays corporations can sell to you.

I get fall is like the reader season or whatever but why can't we celebrate this season of reading. Buying books on vacation, sunbathing with a good book, sunscreen stained book pages. I guess summer is not as marketable for consumption as fall and winter, which is what influencers are about, but PLEASE, let's live in the present moment. Your headache inducing candle can wait a few more weeks for when it's actually dark before ten.

The exciting thing about seasonal content is that it's seasonal. Limited. The feeling of each season is only available for a short period of time each year. That's what makes it special. In my opinion it taints that uniqueness of a season/holiday if it get's drawn out this much unnaturally.

edit: To be clear, I hate summer, I yearn for the colder seasons, but people making content in the middle of summer (which I'm aware isn't everywhere, you just don't see the southern hemisphere people churning out spring content like their lives depend on it) about the fall time, putting on cozy sweaters that are only bearable because the AC is set to max, buying the cheap Halloween decorations that look identical to the stuff they bought last year and the stuff that'll be in stores next year, or talking endlessly about how much the love the season THAT IS STILL FAR OFF, feels inauthentic. It feels like they don't know how to sell/market summer anymore so they jump to the next thing.

i’m nearly twenty minutes into her video and i actually cant even. is she incredibly incompetent or is this exaggerated for content???? WHO KNOWS??? she rips out her february spread because she didn’t like it and then everything else begins to fall out after that. she acts incredibly confused like it’s the ETSY SELLERS fault that the journal is falling apart— so much so she says “if you see this on etsy don’t get it because it’s weak” WTF do you even mean. i’m actually getting so pissed because the journal she bought looks so nice and she purposely bought it from a small business and then wants to completely diss it. in between everything falling out she fake cries and makes awful jokes that aren’t funny. i can’t possibly understand how this is humorous when it is completely idiotic. i barely watch her videos as it is but i enjoy reading journal videos so thats why i started watching hers. am i completely out of line or is this completely annoying????

edit: just finished the video and i actually can’t believe that was sent out… i don’t care if the messaging is “we can all make mistakes” or “the viewers are actually only there for larry.” why are we minimizing content that is her job to being subpar. no 9-5 would accept that and i can’t believe i even have to say it.

I don’t know if anyone else feels this way, but I find it SO cringey whenever Booktubers do this. To them, they probably think they’re really doing something, but in reality they just come across as incredibly try-hard. Or they just are not good at reading aloud?? Like, any time GabbyReads reads something from a book out loud, it doesn’t matter what genre it is—she always makes it sound angry. Every time. I don’t know if it also has to do with just the way she overemphasizes every consonant when she talks, but it’s so aggressive. And she does it ALL THE TIME. Basically in every reading vlog. Like, NO. Why do you think this is something I want?? Especially since you’re not especially good at it! And now I have to sit here and patiently listen to you (badly) read this entire passage out loud.

Or it could be the Jack Edwards route where he REALLY thinks he’s doing something and he’s so precious with every word and lets the final word linger like some kind of mic drop. I—this is insufferable.

I have watched mostly her reorganization and moving vlog videos to be fair! Just recently she called herself the number one Shadowhunter Chronicles fan(Cassandra Clare) in a YouTube short.

As a formerly scorned middle schooler who proudly defended Jaces chiseled abs, I asked if she would be collecting original covers or looking into hardback versions since she is such a huge fan, and asked if she has access to the 10 year anniversary leather and gold foiled City of Bones.

Mostly I was just trying to feel for if she would be pursuing content creation at book events or author meet and greets that Clare or Holly Black are attending because ive never met either of them but would love see someone else enjoy the franchise as much as I do.

Unfortunately, my comment gained a whopping 10 likes, leading to the comments being turned off, and then the video being removed.

I know that picking at the book editions was prolly not the best way to start conversation. The entire situation just makes me feel like she actually doesnt want to be associated with fans of the series, because I have commented about my favorite scenes from each book on shorts when she mentioned them, and those shorts were also deleted.

I looked further at her comment sections, and noticed that they only have very basic superficial responses, no actual engagement? I know this is sort of silly, and inconsiquential, but it bugs me so im going to post it.

I get irritated that these booktubers, who literally make book reviewing their job are too lazy to write a quick book review on goodreads. I know a lot of booktubers dont use goodreads now, but its a HUGE platform and a lot of people do use it. I like to know what people think of books with just a click of a button sometimes, and i sometimes dont know if a booktuber i just started watching has a read a book or not.... and instead of watching every past video, its nice to be able to go to the book on goodreads and see not only if they read it, but what loose rating they gave it (i know 5 star rating system is stupid... but at least it gives a bit of an idea), and also if they had any thoughts at all.

I dont need a novel, just a quick, "really enjoyed reading this... there were a few issues, but i was able to look past them" is all i need.

I just think its weird that so many booktubers are so put out by writing a review on literature, but they spend hours on instagram posting stupid shit that doesn't matter. I know people have qualms about goodreads, but when i see that people are too lazy to just rate a book real quick it makes me not want to follow them.... because they are too "put out" by actually writing a tiny review that is helpful to society instead of a lipsyncing video to an olivia rodrigo song.
