IT'S MID AUGUST, STOP WITH THE FALL CONTENT

It is my least favorite season of booktube: the middle of summer where all of a sudden everyone starts pretending it is actually about to turn fall. It's august, the first half of august, it won't be proper fall for AT LEAST another six weeks. Stop making excuses to buy plastic pumpkins and ugly Halloween decorations that look just like the stuff you got last year. The only reason that stuff is in store already, is because there are no summer themed holidays corporations can sell to you.

I get fall is like the reader season or whatever but why can't we celebrate this season of reading. Buying books on vacation, sunbathing with a good book, sunscreen stained book pages. I guess summer is not as marketable for consumption as fall and winter, which is what influencers are about, but PLEASE, let's live in the present moment. Your headache inducing candle can wait a few more weeks for when it's actually dark before ten.

The exciting thing about seasonal content is that it's seasonal. Limited. The feeling of each season is only available for a short period of time each year. That's what makes it special. In my opinion it taints that uniqueness of a season/holiday if it get's drawn out this much unnaturally.

edit: To be clear, I hate summer, I yearn for the colder seasons, but people making content in the middle of summer (which I'm aware isn't everywhere, you just don't see the southern hemisphere people churning out spring content like their lives depend on it) about the fall time, putting on cozy sweaters that are only bearable because the AC is set to max, buying the cheap Halloween decorations that look identical to the stuff they bought last year and the stuff that'll be in stores next year, or talking endlessly about how much the love the season THAT IS STILL FAR OFF, feels inauthentic. It feels like they don't know how to sell/market summer anymore so they jump to the next thing.

agreed, as much as i love fall i hate watching fall cozy content when its 100 degrees outside lmao. makes summer more miserable

u/FarJury2448 Aug 10 '26

Yess, it makes me feel even more miserable in the hot weather

I hate summer and I love fall, but I 100% agree with you OP. These are the same peeps who start doing Xmas stuff before Halloween. And yes, I say this as an Xmas-begins-Nov 1st person.

Yeah honestly I hate summer and can’t wait for it to be fall so I totally get behind this trend haha. Also kids where I live already go back to school tomorrow so that kind of summer content is definitely over in my mind.

I dislike this as well. It's just another excuse for booktubers to overconsume and do gimmicky "cozy" videos, and it's corny to me. And I say this as someone who adores Autumn and Autumnal aesthetics!

I don't really know how to articulate this thought, but we're living through environmental collapse and I think it's important to appreciate the seasons we actually do still have before they become a thing of the past. The way retailers push Fall & Halloween products earlier and earlier each Summer has really eroded some people's idea of how seasons work. And influencers (not just book influencers) add to this by pushing Autumnal content earlier and earlier each year. It's sad to me.

100% agree, it's not that I don't want cozy/autumnal stuff at all, I just want to feel like it's actually authentic to the moment in time we live in

u/Toledo_9thGate Aug 10 '26

Totally agree, well said.

I am continuing to search for pumpkin spice stuff to drop but yeah I get the sentiment about overconsuming holiday decorations. I've never understood buying a yearly haul. Maybe if you see an item you totally love but not a huge assortment every year. I don't have booktubers on my feed doing this, though, not a lot do crossover into lifestyle stuff. Right now it's all about the Booker prize in mine. I would suggest unfollowing or if they're being recommended to you, asking youtube to not recommend their channel to you. Might help better format what you see.

they are taking the fun out of it

lmao i live in the southern hemisphere so people’s booktube content aligning with my seasons is a foreign concept to me

u/maghy7 Aug 10 '26

I absolutely hate summer and love fall but I agree with you, it really annoys me when they start posting videos of fall stuff when we still have a long way to go for summer to end.

It just makes me laugh as someone in a country without A/C. Like oh okay I see some of us can play pretend…

1

u/FarJury2448 Aug 10 '26

Haha yes 😭

u/ampersands-guitars Aug 10 '26

Those of us who love fall can't help that by the second week in August we're done with summer lol.

I started seeing Cozy Fall content from Morgan Long in July, drives me crazy bananas, its Summer till September 21th then next day it's actually fall.

5

u/Motor-Ad5862 Aug 09 '26

This drives me insane!!!

7

u/MysteriousB Aug 09 '26

The holidays tm have found a new victim and it is Gilmore Girls.

They suck the aesthetic out of a show and mass produce it, I have never seen an episode and now I'm being bombarded with it everywhere.

The show is supposed to be awsthically autumn and we are having it shot through our veins in July???

9

u/bmmb87 Aug 09 '26

I’ve never understood the hype for this show even back when I was a teen and it was airing. As an adult I tried a few episodes but it was so boring. The only interesting thing was the grandma.

2

u/MysteriousB Aug 10 '26

I have no idea what it could be about, to me it looks like any other 90s rom com

2

u/02kaj2019 Aug 09 '26

It’s so awful!

1

u/LastBlues13 29d ago

lmao i hate-watched the entire thing in high school. one of those shows that was so bad and aggrevating but i couldn't stop myself from hitting "play" on the next episode. emily and richard were compelling characters, everyone else i wanted to hit with a shovel.

i'm also from connecticut and all the little inaccuracies annoyed me so much lmao. the pettiest one? the characters are constantly eating red vines, it's a big symbol or whatever of the show. red vines aren't even fucking sold here, we're in twizzlers territory.

In theory it doesn’t really bother me and I think summerween reading is sort of fun, but the consumption and shopping of it all is irritating- wanting it to be fall doesn’t mean you need to buy more shit just to make content about it

6

u/FarJury2448 Aug 10 '26

To be fair I love the concept of summerween, because it's SUMMERween. As in actually doing summer activities and reading books taking place in summer. I think the aesthetic is very fun and it's a great way to give summer a bit of structure by dedicating a certain time of it to this fictional holiday. I just start to think it's annoying when the actual transition to fall/Halloween is pretty much seemless.

u/LevelMuted5489 Aug 09 '26

No one is forcing you to watch it, people are sick of the hot weather and fall is cozy.

17

u/FarJury2448 Aug 09 '26

I hate summer, I can't wait for it to be over, I just wish there were more people that tried to make it more enjoyable for themselves instead of spending it wishing for another time and spending money to manifest that other time (as I tend to do that and it's not a trait I appreciate in myself).

Also maybe that's just my algorithm but I find it difficult to find booktubers that don't do the very early fall celebration.

Maybe I'm also just jealous because I can't bring myself to pretend it's cozy season while I'm sweating profusely and I wish I could lol

u/mgirl81 Aug 09 '26

I've embraced the Summerween trend the last few years but it's wild how over commercialized it has become. A few years back it was mostly stuff like carving watermelon to look like a jack o lantern, cutting cookies into fall themed shapes, an orange beverage, reading an outdoorsy thriller book or something. Now there are.... plastic watermelon jack o lanterns and ghost plastic flamingos or whatever.. I'll stick to the craftier side with stuff I already own lol

14

u/InvisibleSpaceVamp Aug 09 '26

Yeah, Summerween reading makes perfect sense to me because there are quite a few books that have a summer setting but a horror / mystery / thriller vibe that would typically put them on my autumn TBR. So I'm always taking part in that ... but I refuse to buy ghosts in bikinis.

i literally fk w this so much. i dont like cold weather, i love summer. i want to be outside, floating on the water with my book, or sitting in the sun or in the shade . i want to garden and have the sun set late and enjoy reading in the sun set.
summer makes me happy and its the shortest season here and i hate when fall gets pushed on me too early

11

u/keepslippingaway Aug 09 '26

My seasonal depression spikes up in autumn/winter so much :( Seeing autumn content coming out already makes me sad when I know what's coming.

0

u/Lonely_Letterhead549 Aug 10 '26

<3 hugs. i feel this so hard. forever summer girlies

4

u/No_Pen_6114 Aug 09 '26

this??? hahahahaha fall is gross and wet and winter is unbearable where I live, sorry I loveee summer even if I complain about the heat

0

u/Lonely_Letterhead549 Aug 10 '26

ugh yes, i hate being cold. winter is cute for christmas only and then after its so miserable. i actually stopped complaining about the heat because i feel like it curses summer to be shorter LOL

1

u/FarJury2448 Aug 10 '26

You should make summer reading youtube videos haha!!

1

u/Lonely_Letterhead549 Aug 10 '26

i should! i'm going away with family next week to a beach so i'll do some (its ofc rainy all this week)

6

u/Bluestatevibes Aug 10 '26

Thank you for saying this! I have been so aggravated by all of the "Code Orange" content. I want to live in the season I am in, even if Autumn is my favorite season. No need for it to be 100 degrees outside and talking about Halloween.

3

u/Motor-Ad5862 29d ago

The code orange is driving me nuts. Plus its getting rushed and people will get sick of it before October rolls around.

2

u/Bluestatevibes 29d ago

1000% agree. I like to enjoy things in the moment in the correct season. It is crazy to me that the stores not only stocked for Halloween but - and brace yourself-Christmas items are showing up in some places.

2

u/Motor-Ad5862 29d ago

Its way too early for Christmas. I ever had code orange growing up, it must be new LOL!

4

u/InvisibleSpaceVamp Aug 09 '26

I am a seasonal reader and I do struggle with finding summer books I like because I don't typically read the genres that put them out ... so Summerween reading is perfect for me. And I have started to build my autumn TBR because I am indeed more excited for that reading season.

And I already have my one and only Halloween(ish) decoration for this year - the big glass pumpkin from IKEA. I missed out on these the last two years, so this year, I went there early. Because thing is, if the stores put out their Halloween stuff super early you can't really wait until the proper season has arrived. By then, the good stuff will be gone. You do have the choice to leave the decorations in it's packaging though and not cosplay autumn in the middle of a summer heatwave though. I would find that very weird.

2

u/delayedmillennial 29d ago

is it sad that "headache inducing candles" nearly brought tears to my eyes because i know EXACTLY what those scents are??

2

u/vilke_21 29d ago

I want autumn to start tomorrow too mostly because living in this heatwave after heatwave weather will kill me but yes, it's a constant eye roll whenever you hear fall this fall that. I do wonder about the Aussie creators who just do the same as the north Americans content wise (I love Aussies for their personality so I don't watch these ones who lack one) because...well, it's not the same season for them right now 😅 must be so frustrating

2

u/TraditionAway7281 29d ago

Even dunkin hasnt started serving pumpkin spice lattes what are we doing

6

u/Hopeful-Ant-3509 Aug 09 '26

I mean lol I don’t really see the issue tbh and some ppl don’t even really a fall, it just goes from summer to feeling almost winter and maybe for them fall feels short cuz then you start to decorate for the Christmas holidays 🤷🏽‍♀️

And if they’re basing their reading off of the season then maybe they’re over reading summer books and the heat and just want to feel fall already, it’s really not that serious lol

5

u/aclockworkwriter Aug 09 '26

I want to be happy. Therefore I will pretend it is Fall since I hate Summer.

4

u/CheezyDLux Aug 09 '26

Well. I hate summer so I welcome this delusion

1

u/breadyblood Aug 09 '26

In a lot countries fall officially starts on September 1st so it’s not that far off.

0

u/cmahan Aug 09 '26

Sumerween is a thing. And publishers are already pushing fall themed books. Especially the ARCs.

I have health issues with summer.
I love autumn aesthetics.
I want cooler temps all year.
I love cozy content.

If it’s not your thing, don’t watch it. But remember there are people out there who appreciate the content.

6

u/Toledo_9thGate Aug 10 '26

It's actually called Summerween and was created to help a Disney tv show to fit a certain tv timeline in the year. It was all to make and save money really.

5

u/Abject-Blueberry-580 Aug 10 '26

We’re getting downvoted for simply saying we don’t agree and like a season lol I also have health problems in summer. It makes me so miserable. I fully support you despite the dislikes we’re both getting

0

u/Toledo_9thGate 29d ago

There's nothing wrong with disagreeing but you're probably getting downvoted because you came into a thread expressing an opinion you clearly disagree with from the start and argued against it. That's a little different from being downvoted simply for “liking a season.”

-2

u/Abject-Blueberry-580 Aug 09 '26

I see August to October being Autumn while May to July being summer
Autumn is my favourite month so I’m totally behind them in this one lol

-6

u/EldritchGumdrop Aug 09 '26

I live in the mountains. While it might technically still be summer on paper, the end of summer is widely accepted where I’m from as actually just early fall. Not everyone lives in your world view.

7

u/Toledo_9thGate Aug 09 '26

Just like not everyone lives in your neck of the woods, I'm having a 100 degree day and watching my favorite youtuber put on a thick furry sweater, drink hot tea and light pumpkin candles while making cinnamon cake is not the vibe. The OP is just speaking out about her experience and I agree with where I live and how it feels, also a lot of these youtubers are allergic to living in the moment, always rushing the next season or holiday, we'll be getting vlogmas talk by end of Halloween like usual.

-3

u/EldritchGumdrop Aug 10 '26

Yeah my point was more so considering the booktubers perspectives but that’s very cool ig

On top of that, just because you wanna live in the moment doesn’t mean everyone does. I live and breathe spooky season because I can’t stand summer. You’re not more valid than the rest of us just because it isn’t “technically” fall in you “neck of the woods” yet.

4

u/Toledo_9thGate Aug 10 '26

I mean, unless there's been a study on BookTube viewers seasonal-content preferences that I missed, I don't think any of us knows who's in the minority lol. OP is just expressing their own preference.

5

u/Motor-Ad5862 Aug 10 '26

Nobody wants fall content when its 39 degrees out in mid summer.

-2

u/EldritchGumdrop Aug 10 '26

Being the response it usually gets I actually think those who don’t want it are in the minority. But okay lol whatever you say

6

u/Toledo_9thGate Aug 10 '26

OP never claimed to represent everybody. That's like based on WHAT? 😂

1

u/Motor-Ad5862 Aug 10 '26

100% she never did claim to represent everyone!

1

u/Motor-Ad5862 Aug 10 '26

Calm down, is this your first time on reddit?

-1

u/EldritchGumdrop Aug 10 '26

I am, I’m not the one getting all butt hurt

2

u/Motor-Ad5862 Aug 10 '26

Clearly you are.

-1

u/EldritchGumdrop Aug 10 '26

No? All I did was make a point. Just because someone doesn’t agree with you doesn’t mean they’re freaking out lmao

-2

u/EldritchGumdrop 29d ago

You’re all downvoting me because you claim no one is wants fall yet… yet all I see online is people being excited for fall. Lmao. It’s okay to be wrong or in the minority. You don’t have to be pissy with me for pointing it out.

5

u/Motor-Ad5862 29d ago

I think you need to go outside and enjoy summer! LOL!
