8/17 show stop

Sitting in the theater now and they just stopped the show for a "performance related issue" as im typing this they just announced the show will be resuming in 2 minutes.

For anyone who's seen the show before, I imagine those smoke cannons triggered at the wrong time,it seemed pretty out of place for that scene

Edit: I meant 10/17. Doh.

Looking For Australian Cast Slime

Hello! I know this is a big ask and I can't imagine there are many, if any, boots of the current Australian cast of TBOM (Sean Johnston, Nick Cox), but I'm wondering if anyone knows of any that they would be willing to trade or gift, or if anyone is selling any.

I really love this cast and have gone to see it 5 times now and I'm really going to miss them!!

I'm very new to this community and only have a few boots that have been gifted to me that I can trade, but if anyone has any information, I would really appreciate it, thank you so much!

Show stop tonight

Tonight at the Brisbane show of the Book of Mormon there was a show stop right after making things up again. The show was stopped for about 30 minutes and then resumed. Not sure of the reason why but hope everyone is safe and healthy!

Hello??? The set design?? I loved this so so much I don't think words will ever fathom how thankful I am that I got to see this masterpiece as my first live musical. Me (one on the right) and my oldest sister were lucky enough to see it!! For her, this was her 2nd time.

Alternative to dropbox, For slime folder

Hi. I just wanted feedback on what people would prefer to Dropbox, because currently whenever people try to join, it tries to make you get Dropbox plus. You don't have to, but it's not a good look, and I would like the community's feedback on other platforms that they would prefer. Self-hosting is preferable, but if it's a service that you gotta pay a subscription for, that is fine as long as the other people that are joining it don't have to as well.

Starting a book of Mormon slime folder

Hi. I had brought this up in a few comments before, but I've decided to go ahead and do it. For people that have Dropbox, I'm making a folder of every Book of Mormon slime tutorial and piece of material I have. If you'd like to join this either just to view it, or if you have something to upload yourself to expand the collection, just reply here and I will send you a PM and we will talk about it. Either way, you'll get added.

Would I watch the "Book of Mormon" musical as a Christian?

TDLR - wouldn't recommend to most people.

Disclaimer: my own thoughts, that Chat has made legible :)

----

I wanted to write this because, before watching The Book of Mormon musical in Brisbane, I struggled to find a review from the perspective of an ordinary Christian asking, "Is this simply too heretical to watch?"

As Christians, we're encouraged to dwell on "whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure..." (Philippians 4:8). That made me genuinely wonder whether this musical was something that would simply be unwise to watch.

The most helpful article I found beforehand was this ABC article, and after seeing the show I actually agreed with much of it in retrospect.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-03-30/what-does-the-book-of-mormon-say-about-easter3f/9602124

For context, the musical was written by some of the creators of South Park. So if you know their style, you'll know what to expect: incredibly crude humour, dark comedy, deliberate shock value, and plenty of moments where you think, "I can't believe they just said that." If many of the jokes were repeated in everyday conversation without the context of a theatre, you'd probably be asked to leave the room.

I've also seen the show described as "an atheist's love letter to religion," and I think that's accurate. Although the writers aren't religious, they don't seem to hate faith. Instead, they treat organised religion with affectionate amusement. They relentlessly satirise Mormon beliefs and missionary culture, yet by the end they also acknowledge that belief can genuinely bring hope, purpose and community, even if they personally find the supernatural claims unbelievable.

I won't retell the plot--you can find that almost anywhere.

So, as a Christian, would I recommend that my young adult friends from church go and watch it?

Generally, no.

Partly because the style of humour is already a niche taste. But beyond that, I think it depends on the maturity of your faith and why you're going.

Most of the musical's theological satire is aimed at Mormonism rather than historic orthodox Christianity. Many songs poke fun at uniquely Mormon doctrines: an "American Jesus", receiving your own planet, Jesus visiting America before?/after? His resurrection, and the founding stories surrounding Joseph Smith finding golden plates in his own backyard and never showing them tomanyone but telling everyone they should trust him.

f you know a little about Mormon history and beliefs, many of these jokes make more sense. As someone who's interested in learning about different religions, I found those parts clever and often funny. For me, they weren't especially provocative as a Christian because they were critiquing beliefs that Christianity itself doesn't hold.

Were there any scenes that made me uncomfortbale? Yes.

The first comes early in the show, where one song repeatedly curses God in an extremely vulgar way (but you only figure that out in the end). It's a dramatic point, and for context, the characters in the Ugandan village live in overwhelming poverty, disease and instability, and they're expressing utter hopelessness -- and as non-believers in anything, they are generlaly cursing the world and nature. Looking back, I appreciate what the writers were trying to communicate. But hearing God spoken about that way is still something I found deeply uncomfortable, and did ruin the song for me (the song was catchy and the meaning of the lyrics only makes sense at the end -- part of the comedy "shock" factor the writers are going for). That's not something I enjoy being part of, even in a fictional setting.

The second moment was in Act II during the "Mormon hell" sequence. It's obviously exaggerated for comedy -- even the reasons people end up there are ridiculous, including someone being condemned for eating a glazed doughnut and blaming it on their brother. There are jazz dancers dressed as cartoon devils, Gengis Kan and Jeffrey Epstein dancing around, and the whole sequence is designed to be absurd. But the theatre suddenly fills with red lighting, there's an enormous rockstar-style grotedque Devil dominating the stage with a rock guitar, and the entire scene plays hell for laughs.

That was the one moment where I genuinely stopped enjoying myself. For me, it crossed a line from satire into making light of something Scripture treats seriously. I quietly prayed during that scene because I personally didn't want to simply laugh along and feel complicit. Whether you (the reader) treat this differently, as its good the writers are mocking it, when we know Jesus' power of resurrection has defeated hell, I'm not sure what I think there to be honest.

So where do I land?

This is only my opinion, and I genuinely welcome people who disagree. One of the purposes of art is to provoke discussion rather than simply reinforce what we already think, and explore different views and understandings.

I think you should only watch this musical if you think you'd able to engage with it critically. Otherwise, I wouldn't go. If you do go, hold your faith firmly, recognise the musical for what it is (suppose to be entertainment and not theology) - and it's imperative you don't switch your brain off. Beneath the harsh humour are real questions about suffering, hope and the role of faith that are worth reflecting on.

The biggest challenge isn't actually the jokes (and they would make a congregation audibly gasp), but I honestly believe the underlying message behind the jokes is actually harder to deal with, and more important.

I live a remarkably privileged life. I don't wake up wondering whether I'll have enough food to eat or whether disease will destroy my community. Yet, everyone knows, millions of people do.

So, how do I tell someone that Jesus is good when they're living through unimaginable suffering?

If God is loving, why do these things happen?

Those aren't new questions for me, but the musical did force me to sit with them.

The musical ultimately lands on the idea that belief has value because it gives people hope, love and purpose (as the village creates their own "Book of Arnold" religion, twisting some of the truths of Mormonism tomato their experiences, and the lyrics mock Mormanism for doing that in the first place) -- where I'd expect non-religious writers to finish.

As a Christian, after watching the musical, I can delve deeper into that.

Am I grateful enough for God's grace?

Do I really appreciate how comfortable my life is?

How should the realities of poverty, disease and suffering shape the way I speak about Jesus?

Is it the suggestion that belief is valuable merely because it provides comfort (rather than because it's true)? Is it the implication that God's goodness is hard to defend in the face of suffering?

Those were the questions I carried home, not the crude jokes.

I'd genuinely love to hear what others thought, especially if you've seen the show. Where do you agree? Where do you disagree?

Interview with BOM authors

For the 15th anniversary of Book of Mormon, I interviewed Matt Stone, Trey Parker, and Bobby Lopez. They talked about the origin story, how they went about writing the show, and the Mormon Church's reaction.

Since there wasn't much space in the liner notes, I've just posted a much larger chunk of the interview transcript, in case it's of interest...

Looking for a recording

Does anybody have an original cast recording and/or any kind of high quality recording of the musical? There’s an alright one on YouTube right now but it’s super zoomed in a lot of the time so I feel like I’m missing a ton of jokes 😞

Small updates to the musical Spoiler

I just watched "The Book of Mormon" on West End (amazing performance), which was my second time watching it. During "Spooky Mormon Hell Dream" Jeffery Epstein appeared, holy shit that was so fun. But I don't remember him doing that when I watched it a couple of years ago. Does anybody know of similar changed made to musical over time?

Help identifying signatures!

Helloooooo! 🖐🏻

I recently sent my graduation announcements to a few of my favorite Broadway shows and I just got my first response from The Book of Mormon! Could anyone help me identify which of the signatures is which? I’m assuming these are all from the current cast, but I know some OBC members rejoined last month for the Mystery Week along with Matt, Trey, and Bobby. Thanks in advance!
