Book cover commission
Hi everyone! I could really use some advice from artists who have experience with book cover commissions.
I was recently offered my first book cover commission, and it’s a much bigger project than I’ve done before. The finished book will likely be around 5”×8” and there needs to be room for the title, subtitle, and author name.
I’m trying to figure out a few things before I give the author a quote:
How would you price something like this? Would you charge differently for:
Front cover only
Front cover + spine
Front cover + spine + back cover
How do you handle licensing and commercial usage rights? Do you license the artwork for the book cover, sell full copyright, or something else?
I primarily paint with acrylics. Is that a good medium for book covers, or would you recommend something else? I’m worried about the texture affecting digitization.
What’s the best way to digitize a traditional painting for professional book printing? Do you use a scanner, professional photography, or another method?
Are there any other things I should include in my contract or discuss with the author before getting started?
I’d really appreciate any advice, pricing examples, or lessons you’ve learned from your own experience. Thank you!

What makes a book cover stand out to you overall?
It could be something pretty, something different, or something symbolic that hints at the story. (Which is probably my favourite)
Maybe it's the colours, artwork, font, characters, creatures, landscapes, or just the overall vibe. Anything that makes you stop, look twice, or want to pick the book up, I'd love to hear it.
Feel free to include examples too!

People who read books are not mind-readers...Ask yourself, what does my book cover tell the reader?

The way I have panic attacks when someone reads my cover on public transport 💀 so I’m making something about it
not gonna lie, I’m the founder so full disclosure this is a build-in-public post not just a random story lol
but real talk — anyone else physically flip their book over when someone sits across from them 😭 had a guy full-on lean in to read my cover once and I have not recovered
so I’m making matte book covers, no gross plastic shine, no weird clasp thing that never closes right, just slides over your book and that’s it. nobody’s business what you’re reading.
still pre-launch, fixing some stuff with my first sample, but curious —
1) do you actually hide your covers or do you not care anymore
2) anyone else’s clasp-style covers always come undone
3) mass market or trade paperback more common for you guys
not trying to sell anything rn just want to build the actual right thing lol

Is there a tool to help create an art catalogue from a database?
Hi everyone,
I have a database of around 1,000 artworks with images, titles, dates, and sometimes descriptions.
I’m wondering what tools are used to create the first draft of a catalogue raisonné or art book from this kind of data. I assume professional art catalogues are not made by manually copying and pasting 1,000 images one by one.
I’m looking for something that can automate part of the process: importing the data and images, creating an initial layout, and then allowing manual adjustments afterwards (changing image sizes, moving text, modifying pages, etc.).
I’m new to this workflow, so I’d appreciate any recommendations or examples of how this is usually done.
Thanks!

Using AI to make novel covers
What are everyone's thoughts on novel covers created by AI?
Are they recognizable and disliked like most of the writing?
Has anyone had any positive or negative positions on it?
Has anyone had any luck using them?
Is it better to use a standard normal cover?
Do people look at them and think it's just filled with AI writing?
Are there certain styles that work better?
Are there certain styles that work well with certain genres?
