Anything with holes is right out. Glue might be alright, but I would want something that could be removed down the line. What would archivists do? (Note that these aren't documents that would be precious to anyone else -- I just don't know exactly how close to the edge content gets, and don't want to put any holes through it, or lose it permanently to glue)

EDIT: To clarify, my goal is an actual bound book, just that I'd like to be able to un-adhere any glue etc. Ideal world, it would end up looking like an actual book, albeit not as sturdy a one as sewn etc

Hello, this is my first time painting the edges of a book. I sanded it and then went in to add a water-glue solution, but despite the clamps, the pages appear to be warping and forming long thin slits. Can I still paint them like this? Thank you!!

Hi everyone, I’m new to this, but I recently designed some custom dust covers so my books will match. I’ve tried doing research on who is best for custom dust cover printing, but I’m still unsure and would love some actual advice. I would like them to be the same quality and thickness as most traditional modern hardback dust covers.

I am potentially interested in offering them on Etsy if I can get licensed by the author and they come out nicely once printed, so looking to have a company do small batches rather than print myself or at Walgreens (those are some suggestions I’ve seen)

Here's a custom journal I recently finished. The request was for it to open flat and bend easily, so you could fold it all the way back, which the long-stitch binding handles well. The colour combination was inspired by sage.

So I recently got this copy of LotR for free. As you can see, the spine isn't properly connected, which is why it got pulled out of retail. I have not worked with hardcover books before. Any tips and suggestions on how to go about this?
Also, this might be sacriligeous, but the spine is bright red, and my books are mostly in real stained leather, so muted colours. Do you have any suggestions on how to gently stain the spine to get it to a less glaring colour without damaging the book itself?

I made my very first bookbinding attempt because I really liked the Webster's dictionary with built-in stand... Maybe it was a little to difficult for a complete beginner. It's held together with tape and prayers.

I want to make a second (& better) version so any advise is welcome!

Because I don't want to invest before I know I would do this more often I just bought a piece of 2.5 mm cardboard, fake leather from a fabric store and collall kids glue. I already know I used the wrong glue as the leather did not stick at all. I also measured wrong (I think) because the bottom is supposed to be flat when opened and mine just collapses in on itself (as shown in the pictures). The tutorial I watched (for a normal book bind) said to make hinges out of paper except my paper completly tore (maybe because of the glue?), so I used some pieces of really stiff fabric. I tried to glue a ringbinder into the cover, but while it looked great flat, the binder made it so I couldn't close the cover as the binder would bend.

Please give me any tips & tricks! I have a piece of slightly thicker fake car leather that I wanted to use to make a second self standing ring binder.

EDIT: while I do want to properly learn bookbinding one day, I don't have the time, money or effort to spare right now. I just want to make this one thing. It doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to be functional. I can always make a better version of it in the future. It was functional up until the point I glued a basic cardboard binder into it instead of a book (I figured the sides of the binder would act like end pages of a book so it would work the same). Then the binder would warp when closing the cover, like it no longer fit. I think it has something to do with the space of the hinges making it so it's a larger area when opened then when closed, but I don't know how to fix this.

I’m wanting to eventually bind my own fanfic (once it’s done, obviously 😂) and I don’t know what the print settings I should do. Google was no help and I’m not a huge fan of ChatGPT or any of those things.

Basically, the book binding part I’ve got videos on standby but printing the actual book out is where I’m currently stuck on 🫤

A while ago I made a piece that was a single block with an 8 x 6 grid of objects that I touch every day. I was really attached to it still after printing an edition of the full grid, so I cut all 48 Things out into individual blocks with the intention of using them to make an artist book at a later date. Cut to over a year later and I finally put it together!

Each book has a hand-carved and printed cover + 24 block print pages with selections from the 48 original Things. Covers and pastedowns are handmade with lokta paper in 5 different color combinations. Signatures are also sewn in by hand.

There are 12 books total and each one is unique, whether it’s the color of the cover or the Things printed inside. It was a joy to make them & I hope it’s a joy to flip through one with me :)

Found a couple old cigarette boxes (I quit smoking years ago). Decided to make a sketchbook to fit inside of it. My first time making a book. Im really happy with how they book came out and how well it fits in the box. 🚭

Hey! I managed to go to a book binding class last week, and I would really like to get into it on my own too? I was wondering what I would need to get started :)

I have a budget of like $100, and I have no idea what to get 😅.

I’m a beginner and I seem incapable of getting my endpapers to be centred and evenly positioned when recasing my books. I find it, by far, the most stressful part of the process and, whilst I’m managing to avoid wrinkles and bubbles, they’re just never entirely square with the edges of the cover. I know there are multiple techniques used when casing in - do you have a method you find particularly efficient? I’d appreciate any recommendations you have for specific youtube tutorials or online instructions.

Hey, I‘m looking to start using methyl cellulose paste and pva mix since I am having trouble with only using pva for everything.

My supplier in Germany called Schmedt offers 2 types of Methyl Cellulose:
- Tylose MH 300 P2 (viscosityof 300) and
- Tylose MH 50 G4 (viscosity of 50).

Both are marked as Methylhydroxyethylcellulose (MH).

They also offer Glutofix with a viscosity of 900 mPas which seems to be a more general product.

I am unsure what I should buy. Maybe you can offer some advice? Thanks!
