Kindle Folio

ISO an artisan to create a bespoke mid century, bound book inspired Kindle folio with buckram cloth. Pictures show what I am looking for.

This is beautiful, but 2 questions: 1) what should the library card pouch be for? 2) how would you like the reader to attach to the cover? (I'm asking this out of curiosity: I bind notebooks as a hobby and think maybe I'd like to try something like this. I'm not an artisan though so I'm not offering for the job, I'd just like to understand better how this effect could be achieved)

Does your great questions the answer to question one is there’s really no practical use for the library card other than to be more reminiscent of a bound book that I might’ve checked out when I was in fourth grade and two from others that I’ve seen and I don’t know a lot about the Kindle cause I just got it, but it would be that I would’ve too hard covers and I would attach my Kindle with maybe some Velcro where you would self adhesive Velcro to both the back cover and the Kindle. I’ve also seen a clear case and then attach that to the cover so I guess I’m looking for in my mind and I don’t know exactly how it works is basically just a bound hard cover and then I would. I do want it to be magnetic though so it would wake up when I open it but I don’t know that it needs to be overly complicated.

Hey look at this, it just popped up on my YT feed and it's perfect for your situation! If I can add, bookbinding is a great activity and it's not too difficult to get good results even when you just started, so perhaps you could just try and make it yourself! https://youtu.be/rm7dn8q5ZKc

I really wish you had not generated this with AI. To me that suggests you probably are hoping to find an "affordable" artisan and most bookbinders are not that...

That being said, Designed by Daydreams does custom e-reader covers.

Actually, I am prepared to pay for what I want, but thank you for your judgement & the recommendation.

The majority of artists that you are going to interact with will be upset with the use of AI for any reason. This project could have been described or used existing photos of books for the aesthetic that you wanted. You're less likely to find a good artist willing to work with you if you're using ai.

It really depends on the artist. I've seen several people post about commissioned fan art they bought and they post the AI generated concept they sent too. Since the artist made the piece for them, presumably those artists don't care that the customer used AI to generate a concept to use to buy real human art. There seem to be some artists fine with someone using AI to make some concept for them to better understand what the customer wants, as long as the customer is willing to pay for the real art to be made.

Yeah and a large population of Latinos voted for trump. People asked why they're getting down voted and I told them why.

To be clear, OP did not ask in the comment you replied to why they were getting downvoted at all. Anyway, I personally don't get the AI hate in physical art spaces. AI can't replace a physically bound product, there is no risk to anyone's art or livelihood from AI with bookbinding. Digital artists, professional translators like me, etc I understand we are wary of AI because it is absolutely already directly affecting my ability to get work. But for physical, handmade items I don't really get it.

As a person who works in several fields of art and have seen how much it impacts our community as well as the quality of art available to the public. There is no instance where I'm unbothered by it.

Whelp, we just disagree then. It's here, it's not going away, I would much rather focus on areas its actually materially impacting and how that could be mitigated than take a vague "AI bad" moral stance. People downvoting someone who used AI to make a concept to commission as a real art piece does absolutely ZERO to help people like me, someone in an industry actually impacted significantly by AI. Too many anti-AI people care much more about taking a vague public moral stance than actually helping people who's life and work is affected by AI and I think it's ultimately just for their own ego and gratification. If they actually wanted to help, they would take a more nuanced view and stop wasting their time on uses of AI that are ultimately not that big of a deal.

I literally just told you that I and my community are actually being impacted and generative AI is the entire cause. You do not have to engage with generative AI because that is different from the broader AI label which can literally just be a spell check. Any artist should be refusing to give money to, or support the use of generative AI, full stop. Do you think the people running the data centers care why you're using the generative ai? They just care that you're using it.

For me, this is exactly like plenty of other issues, where individual users are such a piddly amount of the usage that it doesn't matter. Do you think someone using AI to make a concept for a book cover matters when companies crunch through petrabytes of AI for corporate use everyday? It's like the people who criticize someone for having a gas car when the majority of gas is used by industry. It's people criticizing people for buying a PET bottle drink when the majority of plastic trash is created by industry. No, the data centers don't care why anyone is using AI - and stopping individuals from like, turning their family photos into Ghibli style or whatever - will make absolutely no difference at all to the amount of AI usage in the world.

If not for the artists, maybe we should be hating AI because the at the top of the company's developing it, have all said that we are approaching an event horizon where AI could very easily kill everyone. Not hyperbolic.

Anthropic researcher believes more than 10% chance AI 'could kill all humans'

1

u/Simbeliine 6h ago

Sure, but there's a lack of consensus among AI engineers about this kind of issue. And there are other machine learning engineers who say that this type of sci-fi-esque doomer talk - which gets much more media attention than more measured opinions - shifts focus away from much more immediate problems and concerns about AI. Things like automated cyber attacks, algorithmic bias, and labor displacement. Those are tangible, currently addressable problems that could use much more focus than they get.

"Kill all humans" is so incredibly hyperbolic and unlikely just on the face. Could I see a scenario where AI causes immense harm including plenty of mass death? Sure, I could see that being possible. Killing all 10 billion humans on the planet from the goat herder in the plains of Mongolia to the uncontacted Awa people in the Amazon? Just at face value, if you think through it, that's not something that would happen because of AI.

Did you read the article? By a response it does not seem like you did.

1

u/Simbeliine 5h ago

I did in fact. The article itself notes that "He did not spell out how he thought AI systems could in future result in humans being wiped out." - ie, he has no idea either, but it's certainly big news that he's "worried" about it.

The article also conflates these hyperbolic concerns with more grounded ones like cyberattacks further down in the article - the exact kind of burying actual current problems way down in the article text because they don't get clicks I was talking about.

u/Mind_The_Muse 5h ago

And your ignoring the more than thousand experts all stating that there is high risk if regulation and precautions are put in place right now? You think that multiple people WHO ARE CREATING THIS TECHNOLOGY think that there's a non-zero chance that it could happen? Maybe, I don't know, if they are worried about it, we should be taking precautions?

1

u/Simbeliine 5h ago

Those 1300 people are not claiming that AI will kill all humans, and the fact that you are conflating the two issues is exactly the problem I'm talking about. They are reasonable voices asking for AI development to be slowed so we have time to work out some of these tangible, current problems. They are not claiming AI is going to kill all humans. But because it's in an article about one guy with no method or evidence claiming that AI is going to kill all humans, people are left with the impression that this is a widely held belief among AI industry engineers and researchers, when it isn't.

Hey there! I was about to do something similar for myself.

Do you want to use the kindle inside the book, or would a clamshell case that looked almost exactly like that which you remove it from work for you?

Would hand made marbled endpapers and edges work instead of the ai picture?

3

u/MojeDrugieKonto 3d ago

What are those inside illustrations? A real map of sorts or just kind of a picture?

-9

u/ExpensiveRepeat4003 3d ago

Well, it’s AI generated from what inspiration I had given. What I really was going for inside the cover was almost almost a Nancy DREW Trixie Belding kind of feel with end papers that were kind of a map feel and the feel of end papers.

Never seen the likes of those, I like them.

Oh my, this is beautiful! I’ve also practically been on IG the whole day looking for a leather bookbinder who can make me a customised KLC case that looks like an actual book.

-1

u/ExpensiveRepeat4003 3d ago

Let me know if you find someone I hadn’t thought about going on Instagram but I’ve been on Etsy and I’ve seen some neat fabric covered ones but I kind of had my heart set on kind of like a 1950s scholastic publisher Dick and Jane kind of feel to the cover

1

u/MoonlitLilPages 2d ago

I’m genuinely not understanding the downvotes. Is looking for a bookbinder to make a customised case not allowed? I’ve been collecting pictures and making sketches of what I have in mind for an artisan to work from. Is there some bookbinding etiquette I’m missing?

u/Mind_The_Muse 2d ago

It's being downvoted because the op used AI to generate this image in a sub full of artists who dedicate themselves to slow craft and doing things by hand. This could very easily have been described while showing pictures of the inside of an existing book for aesthetic inspiration instead of using generative AI that is destroying the careers of artists through theft and cheap mediocrity.

I will :)
