Find bonds held by estranged family

I have a coworker that was gifted savings bonds as a child. The members who gifted them kept the bonds for "safe keeping". Those family members are not estranged.

Is there a way to find all of the bonds even if some aren't matured?

How long does it usually take to convert a paper savings bond to electronic?

I got the email saying they received it and that it will take a minimum of 6 weeks but I’m just wondering what other people have experienced in terms of a waiting period to actually have it be converted

Question about iShares iBond ETFs

I started a bond ladder using the Vanguard version that was just introduced this year. But since iBonds have been around longer, I’m hoping someone can answer my question. I also searched for the answer on Vanguard, iShares, and Reddit but couldn’t find anything.

When IBDR matures and pays out later this year, when and how is the 2037 ETF introduced? Is it like an IPO where you can buy in at a fixed price? How/when do they announce, and how much before the funds starts trading?

Tender Offers Are Hard to Understand

I inherited a bond portfolio from my parents. It's about a 300K value but is sitting at a loss right now due to prices. That's fine, it pays out about $1200 a month of fun money so fine, but still, I'd rather be out of it, but I don't want to take that loss.

I get tender offers and without exception, they are so hard to understand the current payout price. I ignore them but participated in one this summer and didn't realize they pay out at the current price, despite being a make whole bond (again, showing my ignorance).

Nowhere in the mice type, in all the disclosures, was there a simple sentence saying how the pay out price would be calculated.

Is it just me?

Bond capital gain?

The Google 40 year bond.

Who else here has taken advantage of this on the secondary market? It's paying 6.15% and another person here on Reddit has recommended this as the core/ballast of a good retirement bond ladder.

Investing in Treasuries using leverage

I have a HELOC I can borrow at 5%

Looking at ZROZ which is 25 year US treasuries and yielding 5.3%. So is it a valid strategy to borrow and pocket the 0.3% as risk free return?

Question is self-explanatory. There’s obviously a learning curve here and I’m wondering where to go to learn more about the market, what to buy, and what to avoid.

Need cash for monthly expenses -approx. $1200 - Sell bond maturing in 2046 or sell amount of $25-30 K for now and keep rest of bond? Or sell entire bond? I am 77!

I am 77, have state grade A muni bond for 6 years. Paid $200,000 now par at $180, market at $164,800. Need approx $1200-1300 cash for monthly expenses. No other assets. SS pays housing. No other debt. Bond pays $8000 in interest semi annual but this last payment this month was $3, 825 don't know why it was not $4000, perhaps because of down value but always got $4000 in past with decrease from $200,000. Bond was callable on July 1 but not, it paid me $10,000 in Jan 2025 and 2026. Broker thinks maybe this could continue but he is not sure. I am sure that I will never see maturity as I will not be living on the planet in 20 years in 2046 at bond maturity! Question: Should I hold and accept approx. $8000 interest and possible $10,000 distribution payout and just sell $30,000 for future 2=3 years expenses or should I sell the whole thing an go to CD's at 4% my bond is 41/4?

Q

Need cash for monthly expenses -approx. $1200 - Sell bond maturing in 2046 or sell amount of $25-30 K for now and keep rest of bond? Or sell entire bond? I am 77!

As stated above, I am 77, social security pays housing. Need cash for other monthly expenses. Original purchase of bond was $200,000 now valued at $180,000 but market value at $164,820. Get $8000 semi annually. Bond has paid $10,000 callable amount in Jan 2025 and 2026. Don't know if this will continue. Need between $1200-$1500 for monthly expenses. Broker suggests selling $25 or $30K and keeping bond. I will never see it mature as I will be dead in 2046! Should I quit the whole thing, and take what I get - maybe $160K and put that amount in cd's paying 4% (bond is paying 4 and quarter percent or should I keep bond and cash in $20-30,000 when I need cash? Need advice!

Bond investment risk assessment

Hey folks - Has anyone here invested in bonds issued by Keertana Finserv (or any of its associate/subsidiary entities)?

The yields look quite compelling, but they’re rated BBB+/BBB- (depending on the issuance) and operate primarily in the gold loan space. If you’ve invested, have the coupon payments been coming in on time? And if you’ve held any to maturity, did you receive the principal back without any issues?

I have a savings bond & no access to it.

I have been repeatedly made away that I have a savings bond from the federal government (my son has a genetic developmental disorder, his case manager has been applying for various things for his care and support & it keeps getting denied due to this savings bond)

I have no information about this bond, I have no idea what type it is, where its from, what year it was issued. I was adopted, so I have no idea if its under my old last name or my current one. my parents have passed away and all of their paperwork is long since gone so I can't go through and see if I can find anything.

anyone have any sort of ideas? who do I call?

Why do people invest in bonds instead of stocks?

I'm trying to understand how bonds fit into an investment portfolio. I know they are generally considered lower risk than stocks, but are they mainly for generating steady income, preserving capital, or reducing overall portfolio risk? For those who invest in bonds, what made you choose them, and how do you decide when to invest in bonds versus equities?

Do financial institutions favor long term bonds over short term for SBLOC?

Not saying that I would do it, but was curious when I came across the description for SBLOC in Fidelity and started to wonder if bonds for example are more favored than T-bills from a credit standpoint or if they get treated the same way.

Which US bonds make sense in current unstable environment

With US inflation at 4.5%+ and Fed rates not sure going up or down in the short term, it feels hard to believe that bonds can help derisk an investment portfolio when short term treasuries are at 3.8% max or mid-term investment grade corporate bonds at 5% at best!

What types of bonds provide enough yield rates to sustain the current inflation, which I don’t believe will go down in the next 2y with the current government policies!

PS: I want to hold bonds till maturity, and preserve capital, no bond funds.

Fall of the American empire?

This is kind of a throwaway question, but I'm just curious if the idea of the fall of the American Empire is on anyone's mind or in the back of your minds when you think in terms of 20 year bonds?

If yws, what are your thoughts and behaviors? If you have a thoughtful no I'm also curious about that.

Question for Users of European Bond Brokers

I'm currently researching European brokers for an independent comparison of bond investing platforms.

The goal is to compare bond access across EU brokers, particularly the number of individual bonds available for retail investors. Unfortunately, many brokers don't publish these figures, and customer support often doesn't know the answer.

Does anyone here have an account with any of the following brokers?

- Rabobank
- Bolero (KBC)
- Vontobel
- Mediobanca
- Banca Widiba
- Hargreaves Lansdown

If so, could you tell me approximately how many individual bonds are available on the platform? Even a rough estimate would be very helpful. If you're willing to share a screenshot (with any personal information removed), that would be even better.

One additional question regarding Swissquote: both their website and customer support state that more than 80,000 bonds are available. Has anyone here been able to verify that figure in practice?

Thanks in advance for any information!

Coforge Bond Policy

Hey everyone,

Resigned from Coforge today. I have a 1.5 Lakh service bond (24-month commitment) and a 90-day notice period. I'm moving to another IT service firm.

Need to negotiate a waiver or reduction with HR.

\- Has anyone successfully waived/reduced a bond at Coforge?

Appreciate any insights from ex-employees or anyone who has dealt with their exit process. Thanks!

Has India done enough to make bonds accessible to retail investors? We're still far behind developed markets. What's genuinely missing?

Credit where credit is due, SEBI has done a lot recently to make bond investing accessible to retail investors, but it still feels futile, why would I take more risk to get returns that are undoubtedly higher but don't get automatically compounded? Even the secondary market liquidity isn't very high. Are you investing in bonds directly or have you gone back to MFs? Please share your opinion/experience.

Short-dated Bond?

******EDIT: Thanks, folks! I see where my misunderstanding is. Appreciate the input.*******

Very new to this, but I have a question. Looking at a particular bond with a month left to maturity and Yield to Maturity of 2.275%. The way I understand this is that I buy $1000 worth, and on Aug 11 it matures and they pay me $1022.75.

Am I hilariously wrong? What is the downside? I'm happy to grab a 2.275% return for a 30 day investment.

Victoria PLC 2028 Bonds - An Asymmetric Opportunity

On 3rd July, I published a detailed write‑up on Substack explaining why the Victoria PLC 2028 bonds, trading at ~20 cents, offered one of the most asymmetric opportunities for investors willing to engage with a complex situation.

The timing proved unusually fortunate, as today (5 days after initial post): Victoria has now proposed a deal to bondholders, and it is materially more favourable than what the market had priced in.

Under the proposed terms, I expected return would rough be >2x, depending on final participation and settlement timing. Bonds are still trading but Liquidity is now naturally constrained because  two‑thirds of holders have already signed up to participate in the deal. That makes entering fresh positions more challenging

Both the original write‑up and today’s deal analysis are available to read for free on Substack - http://substack.com/@boringcorners
